SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Three members of a California family pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy for their role in a ring that shipped $600 million worth of stolen catalytic converters from California to New Jersey, federal prosecutors said. The three Sacramento family members pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport the devices in return for more than $38 million. Tou Sue Vang also pleaded guilty to 39 charges related to money laundering, prosecutors said. Catalytic converters are easily stolen and contain precious metals including platinum. “The black-market price for catalytic converters can be above $1,000 each.”California accounts for 37% of catalytic converter theft claims nationwide, with about 1,600 reported stolen each month, federal prosecutors said.

Young, rich Americans are leaving places like New York and California for more affordable living in Florida and Texas. But to find the highest concentration of wealthy young people, Washington is the place to be. The state just edges out California, where 10% of high-earners are young professionals. New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey also have high rates of high-earning young people. Washington's young and wealthy demographic is buoyed by Seattle, where early-career workers can earn a lot in the high-paying tech and health care sectors.

A photo by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for an initiative called “No Place for Hate” has been altered to replace the word “hate” with “whites,” yet some online posts share the edited photo alongside calls to ban the nonprofit. ADL created the “No Place for Hate” initiative to provide schools and communities with a framework for combating bias, bullying and hatred. A post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “Why does the ADL promote this overt anti-White hatred and bigotry? The photo shows four people holding balloons that read: “NO place for WHITES.”Another example on Facebook said, in part, “The ADL is an anti white hate group” and calls for a ban on the ADL (here). The signage on the balloons read: “NO place for HATE.”A cropped version of the photo can also be seen on a page dedicated to the initiative on the ADL website with the same “NO place for HATE” wording (www.noplaceforhate.org/why).

REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLITTLETON, Colorado, Aug 29 (Reuters) - The low interest in the first-ever auction of offshore wind farm development rights in the Gulf of Mexico marks a potentially serious setback for U.S. President Joe Biden's green energy agenda, and the U.S. offshore wind sector in general. U.S. officials had touted the auction as a key milestone in Biden's agenda to make offshore wind a cornerstone of U.S. efforts to fight fossil-fuel-driven climate change. In addition to lower wind speeds and hurricane risks, potential wind farm developers in the Gulf waters must also accommodate relatively lower local power market prices than other parts of the United States, which greatly undermines wind power earning potential in the region. As offshore wind power systems are still in their relative infancy compared with other power sources, the average cost of power generated from offshore sites can be twice the cost of that from a gas-fired plant. Without a viable offshore wind sector, those industries may now struggle to secure the quantities of green hydrogen they may be anticipating in coming decades, and so could look for ways to support the wind sector's development in the years ahead.
