Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested Wednesday that the United States revert to a historic name for the territory, America Mexicana, in a clapback at President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Trump had said during a news conference on Tuesday that he was seeking to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America. "Why don't we call it America Mexicana. That name, America Mexicana, also is referenced in Mexico's Constitution of Apatzingán drafted during the independence movement against Spanish rule, the expert said. “Since 1607, the Constitution of Apatzingán was of America Mexicana, so let’s call it America Mexicana," the president then said.

Dienst and CopenhagenThe bombs failed to go off because Jabbar used the wrong device to detonate the explosive, federal law enforcement officials have said. Three explosive experts interviewed by NBC News said they were baffled that Jabbar seemingly knew to use a little-known compound more powerful than TNT but not how to get it to detonate. By using RDX, experts say Jabbar was mimicking the tactics of terrorist groups operating in the Middle East, where it is far easier to obtain. Had Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, used RDX, the attack would have been even more catastrophic, experts said. “You’d have multiple buildings blown down.”Building a bomb with RDX is also more challenging and more dangerous.

A "skit" at a fraternity party that left a pledge with burns over 16% of his body led authorities to file charges against four San Diego State University students, including the person who was injured. The charges stem from a Phi Kappa Psi party on Feb. 17 that left Larsen with burns. At the time of the party, the fraternity was on probation by the university, the release says. All four students were active members and pledges of Phi Kappa Psi, officials said. Phi Kappa Psi did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Heating bills are expected to rise again this winter, especially for those who warm their homes with electricity. Their bills are expected to swell by 14.2% to an average of $1,189, up from $1,040 last winter, NEADA said last month. “Families who just finished paying for record-high electric bills because of the extreme summer temperatures are now facing higher winter bills as well,” NEADA Executive Director Mark Wolfe said. Under LIHEAP’s current funding levels, about 80% of the program’s aid goes toward winter heating costs and 20% toward summer cooling, Wolfe estimated. Experts say there are a few ways consumers can hold down their heating costs.

The content creators who’ve also sued similarly turn the lens to the estimated 170 million Americans who use TikTok and the primary content they view. The law forces TikTok to find a new owner or face a ban on January 19. Under the law, TikTok would be allowed to continue operating after January 19 only if it divests the platform from ByteDance. CNN —President Joe Biden will no longer travel to Italy this week as scheduled, the White House announced late Wednesday, canceling the trip in the final days of his presidency to monitor raging wildfires across the Los Angeles area. Six wind-driven fires blazing across Los Angeles County remained largely uncontained at the time of the White House announcement, with authorities issuing evacuation orders late Wednesday related to a brushfire in the Hollywood Hills near Runyon Canyon. Biden was scheduled to travel to Rome on Thursday, where the White House said earlier in the day that he’d meet with Pope Francis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Diplomats in world capitals said they would zero in on what his administration does, rather than what Mr. Trump says. Even before taking office, Mr. Trump, with his surprising wish list, has stirred up “here we go again” commentary from across the globe. CNN —A potentially crippling strike up and down America’s East and Gulf Coasts has been avoided – at least for now – after longshoremen and the shipping and port companies reached a tentative deal on a new contract Wednesday. Without a deal, the port workers were set to go on strike on the morning of January 16. “We are pleased to announce that ILA and USMX have reached a tentative agreement,” the two sides said in a joint statement. However, the contract gives the ILA guaranteed jobs directly associated with any new technology, the source said. Management had argued ports need to introduce technology to improve productivity – not to eliminate union jobs.

CNN —When President-elect Donald Trump mused about buying Greenland from Denmark during his first administration, the Danish prime minister called the idea “absurd” and rebuffed him outright. Now, Danish officials are being warned by Trump allies and advisers that he is serious, multiple Danish officials told CNN. “The ecosystem supporting this idea is totally different now” than it was in 2019, when Trump first proposed it, said one senior Danish official. “This seems much more serious,” said another senior Danish official. Still, taking over the security administration of Greenland would be a heavy lift for the US and require new investments, US and Danish officials said.

London CNN —Ryanair, Europe’s biggest airline, is going after unruly passengers on its flights and has filed for €15,000 ($15,400) in damages from a passenger who disrupted a flight last year. There have been several reports of disruptive behavior on Ryanair flights in recent years. In November, the UK’s Independent newspaper reported that a Ryanair flight was forced to alert authorities before landing in Tenerife, Spain after several passengers became disruptive and one person urinated in the aisle. A passenger who disrupted a Ryanair flight to Athens in 2020 was convicted last month in a Greek court and given a five-month suspended jail sentence, along with a €400 ($412) fine. “We plan to pursue civil action against disruptive passengers as a move towards eliminating disruptive passenger behaviour,” the spokesperson added.

CNN —After nearly a decade in power, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finally bowed to a chorus of criticism that had become too loud to ignore, announcing his resignation on Monday. In December, then-Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland had sharply rebuked what she described as Trudeau’s pursuit of “costly political gimmicks,” referring to recent policy proposals including a two-month sales tax holiday and 250 Canadian dollar ($175) rebates for most workers. After Trudeau was elected prime minister, Freeland’s career also ascended. First to the position of minister of international trade, followed by minister of foreign affairs before finally filling the role of deputy prime minister. Rome AP —Rescue crews found the body of a British hiker buried in the snow of the Italian Alps and were continuing to search for his friend, who had also been missing since January 1, Italy’s rescue services said Wednesday. After the first two days of searches were hampered by snowfall, fog and avalanche warnings, rescue crews managed to get a helicopter in the air Wednesday and ground crews reached the pair’s last recorded location. Guided by the hikers’ phone recordings, crews found the men’s backpacks and equipment, as well as the body of one of the hikers buried in the snow, the rescuers said in a statement. A helicopter attempted a flyover on Tuesday, but fog and poor visibility forced it to return before reaching the affected valley and the search was suspended, the rescue crews said. Additionally, ground crews of the fire rescue service were unable to work due to high risks of avalanches.

While Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk never did face off in that cage match, " Uncle Elon " has bested Zuck in the political arena, becoming one of the most powerful unelected figures in modern US history. Community notes is only the latest page Zuckerberg has taken from his billionaire rival's playbook. The declaration would allow Trump to construct a new tariff program by using the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, known as “IEEPA,” which unilaterally authorizes a president to manage imports during a national emergency. “Nothing is off the table,” said a second source familiar with the matter, acknowledging the robust discussion over declaring a national emergency that has taken place. No final decision has been made on whether to declare a national emergency, sources told CNN. They’re also considering revisiting the trade law – known as section 301 – that ushered in Trump’s initial tariffs on China on national security grounds. If Trump opted to declare a national economic emergency, which could be put into effect quickly, it’s unclear what evidence he would cite.
