CNN —“Yellowstone” writer-producer Taylor Sheridan has excelled at luring big stars to television with relatively thin material, a formula that feels especially transparent with “Special Ops: Lioness,” his latest series for Paramount+. Zoe Saldaña takes point in this fact-based tale of female special-ops soldiers, which races through the set up by relying on a litany of war-story cliches. “You came to the right place,” she’s told, before acing her training and being quickly drafted to join Joe’s unit. Nevertheless, when it comes to training an audience to come back week after week, “Special Ops: Lioness” feels about as basic as it gets. “Special Ops: Lioness” premieres July 23 on Paramount+.

A bison gored a 47-year-old Arizona woman Monday morning in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. In the wake of the two incidents involving national park guests within days of each other, the National Park Service has issued a warning that bison can be easily agitated during mating season. With minor exceptions, the major categories were filled in the expected ways when the 2023 Primetime Emmys nominations were announced on Wednesday. Some surprises cropped up further down the page, where the members of the Television Academy apparently started checking off every name they saw from favored shows like “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus.”Snub: Taylor SheridanHe may be the most successful maker of television currently working, but Sheridan gets no respect at the Emmys. But it was a mild shock to see a second Disney+ “Star Wars” show (along with “Andor”) break through in the limited-series category. Ewan McGregor, who reprised his Obi-Wan role from the prequel films, apparently draws a lot of good will. The merger of TV comedy into satirical drama is just about complete.

June 24 (Reuters) - A bridge in Montana collapsed into the Yellowstone River early on Saturday, landing multiple rail cars in the water, officials said. Montana Rail Link, the company operating the train, said in a statement that "several hazmat cars" plunged into the river. The rail cars were carrying asphalt and molten sulfur, substances that quickly solidify when they come in contact with cooler temperatures, the company said. Two cars transporting sodium hydro sulfate, an acid salt, did not enter the water and initial air quality assessments indicate the chemical was not released from the cars, Montana Rail Link said. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks said the derailment and bridge collapse led to the closure of parts of the Yellowstone and Stillwater Rivers.

The number of short-term rentals in Bozeman, Montana, nearly doubled between 2020 and 2023. The number of short-term rentals in town nearly doubled during the pandemic, according to analytics site AirDNA. Finegan said banning short-term rentals is "one of the most impactful things in our control" to create more affordable housing for locals. He dismissed banning short-term rentals because of rowdy or unclean guests, calling those arguments a "red herring" often drawn up against hosts. Larsen said she would support a ban on whole-home short-term rentals.

CNN —Yellowstone National Park has urged visitors to protect wildlife after a string of incidents that have left animals killed or endangered, including one in which tourists gave a newborn elk a ride in their car. “The park calls on visitors to protect wildlife by understanding how their actions can negatively impact wildlife.”On Memorial Day weekend, visitors put a newborn elk calf in their car and brought it to the West Yellowstone Police Department. On May 28, two adult black bears, both dark chocolate brown in color, were struck and killed in separate vehicle collisions in the park, Yellowstone said. Yellowstone also warned visitors to keep their distance from the wildlife after a number of incidents were reported. Yellowstone emphasized that park regulations require visitors to remain 25 yards away from all wildlife and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.

Clifford Walters said he was only trying to save a struggling newborn bison when he made a sudden decision to push it up from a riverbank in Yellowstone National Park. But Mr. Walters’s encounter with the animal on May 20 landed him in federal court, where he pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of feeding, touching, teasing, frightening or intentionally disturbing wildlife, which is a misdemeanor. Mr. Walters was ordered to pay a $500 fine, a $500 community service payment to the Yellowstone Forever Wildlife Protection Fund, a $30 special assessment and a $10 processing fee, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming said in a statement. Mr. Walters, 78, represented himself in court and said in an interview on Friday that he believed the outcome was fair. The charge he was facing carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

A Climactic Opening

Today is something of a curtain raiser for the U.S. National Parks system, ushering in its busiest season. Last year, nearly 312 million people visited the parks, hiking across the Grand Canyon, posting Instagram stories from Joshua Tree and waiting for Old Faithful by Yellowstone’s rainbow pools. On Memorial Day last year, so many people headed to the sites that many of their parking lots were full by midmorning. At Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, home to 50-million-year-old rock formations, park rangers start clearing the way for visitors weeks ahead of the busy season. Similar preparation plays out at the system’s parks around the country.
Park rangers were forced to euthanize the animal after its herd rejected it, officials said. Visitors later reported seeing the calf follow cars and other people, the park service said. "Park rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the calf with the herd. The statement added that the newborn calf was not a good candidate for quarantine, as it would not have been able to care for itself. Human interference with wild animals can "drastically affect their well-being," the park service said, reiterating the importance of giving them space.

The majestic peaks, desert blooms and geological wonders of the United States’ national parks have beckoned to billions since Yellowstone was established in 1872. Nearly 312 million people visited last year, signaling a return to prepandemic levels. Spring and summer months are particularly packed at the hundreds of sites managed by the National Park Service. To prepare for peak season at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah — essentially, an island of crimson rock spires perched at about 8,000 feet — rangers begin restoring trails and training staff before the snows even melt.

REUTERS/Jim UrquhartThere are two kinds of bears you're likely to run into while outdoors in North America, depending on where you are: grizzly bears and black bears. Opinion | Can the Writers’ Strike Fix Hollywood?
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
A somewhat more pessimistic analysis, offered by writers like Sonny Bunch and Jessa Crispin, emphasizes that the superhero-sweatshop corporate strategy evolved because it’s giving audiences what they want. And so even if the strike is an opportunity for reconsiderations, it’s probably not a lever that can change the system as a whole. Personally I would like to see the strike lever a different Hollywood system into being. (HBO’s “Westworld,” for instance, or lately Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”) Sometimes they play like thin imitations of the previous decade’s antihero dramas. Or they take on the character of the theatrical experience but somewhat worse — with too-big-to-fail franchises that nobody really enjoys.
(AP Photo/Universal Pictures) Photo Credit: Universal Pictures/Tippett StudioAfter spending years amassing streaming subscribers at great cost, media companies now need to make some profits. Look no further for proof of that than the most recent annual Upfronts, the events where media companies like Fox Corp ., Warner Bros. During Disney's earnings call earlier this month, CEO Bob Iger put new emphasis on ad-supported streaming. 'We need ads'There's been an uptick of consumers signing up for ad-supported streaming subscriptions. But media companies are struggling with the question of whether ad-tier subscriptions make up for other losses.
