Last week, the Justice Department and a group of states presented the judge with a plethora of proposed remedies. It would also be barred from making itself the default search engine on its own products and disallowed from preferring its own products in search results. The test for a successful remedy is whether the market becomes more competitive, with higher output or a better experience for consumers. At this point, the Justice Department has not sufficiently explained why its proposed actions are an appropriate remedy. Some of the proposals were not addressed at any length in the judge’s opinion in the Google trial at all.

A permanent ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah is scheduled to begin Wednesday, following a yearlong conflict between the Jewish state and Iranian-backed groups. "Over the next 60 days, the Lebanese army and state security forces will deploy and take control of their own territory," said Biden. Earlier in the day Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address that he supported the ceasefire deal, which he sent to his Cabinet for approval. "The ceasefire allows us to focus on the Iranian threat," said Netanyahu. "We will complete the elimination of Hamas, the return of all the hostages and the return of the residents of the north."

Federal Reserve officials expressed confidence that inflation is easing and the labor market is strong, allowing for further interest rate cuts albeit at a gradual pace, according to minutes from the November meeting released Tuesday. In addition, they expressed uncertainty over where the rate cuts would need to stop before the Fed hit a "neutral" interest rate that neither boosts nor restrains growth. Conflicting signals on inflation and the uncertainty over Trump's policies have caused traders to scale back their outlook for interest rate cuts ahead. Officials indicated that the state of the labor market is generally solid. "Participants generally noted … that there was no sign of rapid deterioration in labor market conditions, with layoffs remaining low," the minutes said.

This column is part of Times Opinion’s 2024 Giving Guide. Read more about the guide in a note from Times Opinion’s editor, Kathleen Kingsbury. For people with debilitating long Covid, the new year heralds a cruel anniversary: Some are experiencing their fifth year with the agonizing illness. And despite the roughly $1.6 billion that the National Institutes of Health has received for long Covid research, not a single drug has yet been approved for that purpose. Some who had scientific backgrounds created a research subgroup but quickly realized that there was almost no useful information available.

CNN —Researchers have discovered the residues of psychedelic drugs, bodily fluids and alcohol inside a 2,000-year-old mug, suggesting that ancient Egyptians imbibed hallucinogenic beverages during rituals. “Religion is one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of ancient civilizations,” Tanasi said in a statement. Researchers analyzed a 2,000-year-old Bes mug for chemical and DNA traces. Tanasi scanned the Bes mug to conduct a three-dimensonal study of the vessel. “Inebriation played an important ritual role in some ancient Egyptian festivals, especially festivals associated with the flooding of the Nile,” Barrett said.

AdvertisementDuring his first term, Trump threatened tariffs while renegotiating trade with Mexico and Canada. Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for Treasury secretary, has called tariffs a "negotiating tool." In June of 2019, Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico if the country didn't alter its immigration system, which it eventually did. While financial analysts are taking Trump's threats seriously, some banking leaders seem to think that Trump's most recent tariff threat is a continuation of his prior negotiation tactic. CNN —With a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire on the horizon, an 18-year-old United Nations resolution has resurfaced as a blueprint for ending the war. The 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the hope that it could form the basis of a lasting truce. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. Here’s what we know about the resolution and why it is critical to a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In 2000, the UN established the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” for Israeli forces from Lebanon.

According to the UNESCO study, 62% of surveyed creators said they don’t vet the accuracy of content before sharing it with their followers. The study comes in the wake of the 2024 US presidential election, in which social media influencers played a key role as an information source for voters. During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris harnessed social media influencers and podcasters with millions of followers, including Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper, to appeal directly to voters. And a separate survey from Pew found that more than half of American adults “at least sometimes” get their news from social media. Online influencers generally do not rely on official sources of information, such as government-issued reports and documents, the UNESCO study found.

Amgen on Tuesday said its experimental weight loss injection helped patients with obesity lose up to 20% of their weight on average after a year in a critical mid-stage trial, as the company races to join the booming obesity drug market. The drug, MariTide, also helped patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes lose up to 17% of their weight after a year. The company said it did not observe a plateau in either group of patients, which indicates the potential for further weight loss beyond 52 weeks. That could boost Amgen's odds of winning a slice of the weight loss drug market, which some analysts forecast could be worth $150 billion a year by the early 2030s. That's unlike Eli Lilly's obesity drug, Zepbound, which activates both GIP and GLP-1.

CNN —Can the green shoots of clean energy break through the “brown blockade”? Those huge current and planned investments in new manufacturing plants may represent the sole opportunity to preserve any elements of Biden’s blueprint for growing the domestic clean energy industry. Republican districts are slated to receive an equally large share of another $435 billion in clean energy projects that have been announced but not yet built, the analysis found. The US reliance on the fossil fuels driving climate change has been declining for years, but only at a modest pace. Yet interrupting that transition by repealing the federal policies benefiting clean energy remains a dangerous gamble.

It’s official: A legal settlement that will rewrite the way many real estate agents are paid in the United States has received its final approval from a federal judge. Judge Stephen R. Bough of the Western District of Missouri on Tuesday approved an agreement between the National Association of Realtors and a group of home sellers who sued the real estate trade group over its longstanding rules on agents’ commissions, which they say forced them to pay excessive fees. It was the last step in an eight-month process that was set in motion when N.A.R., the nation’s largest trade association, agreed to the landmark deal on March 15. It was also largely a formality — Judge Bough gave preliminary approval to the agreement on April 23, and the rule changes detailed in the settlement took effect on Aug. 17, forcing agents across the country to begin adjusting how they do their jobs.
