SINGAPORE — A Singapore court on Thursday sentenced a former minister to 12 months in prison for obstructing justice and receiving more than $300,000 worth of gifts, in the first jailing of a former cabinet member in a city-state famous for its clean governance. In a statement posted on the prime minister’s office website, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said he was disappointed and saddened by the case. The case has shocked Singapore, which prides itself on its well-paid and efficient bureaucracy as well as strong and squeaky-clean governance. According to the prosecution, the value of the gifts Iswaran received totaled more than 400,000 Singapore dollars ($308,500). The former minister faced a total of 35 charges, two of which were corruption-related but were later amended to charges of receiving gifts while a public servant.

After several exchanges about a possible interview, the publisher sent an unusual demand last week: an interview would cost $250,000. Melania Trump’s spokesperson declined comment. Spokespeople for ABC, NBC and CBS declined to comment on whether they received a similar request for payment from Trump’s publisher. But in this case, the Trump campaign hasn’t been involved in Melania Trump’s book rollout.

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania law school says it is imposing a one-year suspension at half-pay and other sanctions along with a public reprimand on a tenured professor over her comments about race in recent years. The university said Professor Amy Wax — who has questioned the academic performance of Black students, invited a white nationalist to speak to her class and suggested the country would be better off with less Asian immigration — will also lose her named chair and summer pay in perpetuity and must note in public appearances that she speaks for herself, not as a university or law school member. The suspension is to begin in the 2025-2026 academic year. The university has not, however, fired her or stripped her of tenure. Wax’s lawyer, David Shapiro, told the campus newspaper, the Daily Pennsylvanian, in November that officials targeted Wax over her public comments and some elements of her class on conservative thought, including having a white nationalist figure speak.

SpaceX is set to launch two new crew members to the International Space Station on Saturday, in a capsule that will eventually bring home two NASA astronauts who flew to orbit on Boeing’s problem-plagued Starliner spacecraft. On their return flight back to Earth, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will ride with them. After numerous delays, NASA opted to keep the two astronauts at the space station. Originally, the Crew-9 flight was supposed to carry four crew members to the space station, but in order to leave seats open for Wilmore and Williams, two NASA astronauts will have to wait for a future launch. Chinese markets clocked their best week in almost 16 years as the mainland’s CSI 300 rallied 15.7% this week, buoyed by several economic stimulus measures by the central bank. The last time the index saw a bigger weekly gain was the week ending Nov. 14, 2008. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index recorded a weekly gain of 12.75%, making it the index’s best week since February 1998, according to FactSet data. Tokyo’s headline inflation rate eased to 2.2%, down from August’s 2.6%. A slate of fresh U.S. economic data also supported the market’s gains, with weekly jobless claims falling more than expected, pointing to a steady labor market.

☆ Shohei Ohtani: 18-year-old files lawsuit over ownership of historic 50-50 ball, seeks to prevent auction

CNN —An 18-year-old has filed a lawsuit over the ownership of the ball Shohei Ohtani made baseball history with when he became the inaugural member of the 50-50 club. The ball had been put up for auction by auctioneers Goldin, with bids starting at $500,000 and collectors able to purchase it privately outright for $4.5 million. Both Belanski and Kelvin Ramirez indicated on social media that they intended to sell the ball, per the filing. In December 2002, a San Francisco judge ordered the two men to sell the ball and split the proceeds. The ball was eventually sold to comic book creator and producer Todd McFarlane who paid $450,000 for it.
