New York CNN —A day after an E. coli outbreak tied to Quarter Pounders in the western part of the United States left one dead and 10 hospitalized, McDonald’s entered full damage-control mode. “We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today” Wednesday. Most of the illnesses are in Colorado and Nebraska, and most of the people who fell ill ate Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. “If there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it’s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already.”McDonald’s (MCD) stock fell more than 5% at Wednesday — its worst day since the March 2020 Covid lockdown. Chipotle’s outbreak is the worst-case scenario for any restaurant chain, and McDonald’s E. coli situation appears to be limited, at least for now, to a supply issue.

CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Should a peace agreement be reached in the conflict, either the Russian assets will stay frozen and generate interest to repay the loans until they’re repaid, or Russia will pay for the damage it has caused.

Younger Black men have received increased attention from the Harris campaign in recent days. Since January, Black Men Vote has been reaching out to its target audience in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where the group says it has registered more than 100,000 Black men to vote. Black Men Vote has also partnered with barbers, who they’ve trained as voting ambassadors to talk to clients about civic engagement. Ninety-two percent of Black voters in the state backed the president, including 89% of Black men and 94% of Black women, according to CNN exit polls.

At least one person was killed and 10 others were wounded after a shooting broke out at a party of high school-age kids in Indiana on Saturday night, according to police. The Democratic National Committee is using the last stretch of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour to urge young people to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. In conjunction with her shows, the DNC announced that it is launching a Taylor Swift-themed “I Will Vote” campaign across Florida and other battleground states. Ads for the “I Will Vote” campaign will begin appearing across Miami on billboards, including a mobile billboard on a boat near Hard Rock Stadium. The advertisements will encourage young voters to embrace their “Kamala era,” the DNC said in its announcement. Before Swift backed the Democratic ticket, many of her fans had already formed the group Swifties for Kamala — which is unaffiliated with Swift, the DNC or the Harris campaign — to raise money for Harris.
