UMG's choice to saturate the music market with 'Not Like Us' comes at the expense of its other artists, like Drake." And Drake is one of the biggest artists streaming on Spotify, with about 10 million more monthly listeners than Lamar. Music industry insiders, meanwhile, are skeptical of the allegations themselves. The sporting goods giant is now expecting fiscal 2024 same-store sales to grow between 3.6% and 4.2%, up from a previous range of 2.5% to 3.5%. The bipartisan legislation, introduced to Congress in 2023, would create a federal workplace retirement account for workers, similar to a 401(k). Such a plan would undoubtedly improve outcomes for those who wouldn't have otherwise have access to workplace retirement accounts, a recent study from Morningstar finds. While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. The 25% tariff Trump floated would have “huge impacts” on gas prices, amounting to an increase between 25 cents to 75 cents per gallon, he said. Said differently, your guac and avocado toast could skyrocket if 25% tariffs are levied on Mexico. Bottom line: It’s going to hurtThe new round of tariffs Trump is prepared to impose comes as the US has grown increasingly reliant on imports from Mexico and Canada.

The Israeli military also told entire towns in southern Lebanon to evacuate, including Naqoura, where a United Nations peacekeeping force is based. The cease-fire proposal, mediated by American and French diplomats, would start a 60-day process during which both sides would stop fighting and withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israel has sought guarantees from the United States that it would have U.S. support to send troops back into southern Lebanon if Hezbollah violated the arrangement. Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, suggested last week that the group would accept a truce if Israel stopped striking Lebanon and Lebanon retained its sovereignty. CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

‘Demure’ is Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Karina Tsui | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —“Demure,” a word that went viral over the summer, has been named Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year — beating out other contenders like “brainrot,” “brat,” and “weird.”In an announcement Monday, the site said that the word experienced a “meteoric rise in usage” in 2024 — up 1,200% between January and August — a spike that was largely attributed to TikToker and beauty influencer Jools Lebron’s popularization of the phrase “very demure, very mindful” in a series of satirical videos that shook the internet. “That’s the joke!”The satire is clearest in a clip in which the TikTok star asserts that she’s going to behave in a demure, mindful way while going out on the Las Vegas Strip. I don’t dog-ear pages, I put in a bookmark,” RuPaul said in a video promoting online bookstore Allstora. Lebron, who is transgender, said that the fame from her “demure” videos has helped her finance the rest of her transition. “Brat,” another word that has taken on new meaning in 2024, was named Collins Dictionary’s word of 2024 for being one of the most talked about words on and offline.

TuesdayA quick-moving storm is bringing rain to parts of the East Coast while a few snowflakes fall around the Great Lakes. High elevation snow will bury areas from California’s Sierra Nevada to the Colorado Rockies while rain falls at lower elevations. Conditions will ease throughout the day for California and Nevada but sloppy weather will persist farther east, especially in Utah and Colorado. Dreary weather will extend from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast as the storm that formed late Wednesday pushes east. The Thanksgiving day storm will largely be out of the East by sunrise but lake-effect snow will start up for areas downwind of the Great Lakes as Arctic air rushes over the record-warm lakes.

The new Mate 70 smartphone, which starts at 5,499 yuan ($760), features the HarmonyOS Next operating system, which no longer supports Android-based apps. The Mate 70 represents a “critical step” in Huawei’s software evolution, Lucas Zhong, research analyst at Canalys, told CNN. The shift away from the Android ecosystem “will be essential for Huawei to maintain momentum in the premium segment, solidify consumer loyalty, and attract potential platform switchers,” he said. Major Chinese tech companies have reportedly gotten on board, hiring developers to create compatible apps. “If no one uses it, no matter how advanced the operating system is, it will have no value,” he said, according to a Wechat post.

While economists say this holiday shopping season could ultimately be the most normal one (sales-wise) since before the pandemic, it’s also decked out with plenty of uncertainty. While it would set a new record as well (keep in mind, those figures aren’t adjusted for inflation), this holiday season might be a little more muted than last. A shortened holiday seasonA short shopping season, however, may force the hands of retailers who are looking to hold back on deep promotions. This year, there are 26 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, marking the shortest holiday shopping season possible. Courtesy Dan MarshallMarshall remains quite optimistic that Mischief will enjoy yet another strong Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and, ultimately, holiday season.

Federal Reserve officials expressed confidence that inflation is easing and the labor market is strong, allowing for further interest rate cuts albeit at a gradual pace, according to minutes from the November meeting released Tuesday. In addition, they expressed uncertainty over where the rate cuts would need to stop before the Fed hit a "neutral" interest rate that neither boosts nor restrains growth. Conflicting signals on inflation and the uncertainty over Trump's policies have caused traders to scale back their outlook for interest rate cuts ahead. Officials indicated that the state of the labor market is generally solid. "Participants generally noted … that there was no sign of rapid deterioration in labor market conditions, with layoffs remaining low," the minutes said.

Russia expels British diplomat for alleged espionage
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Lauren Kent | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —Russia expelled a British diplomat who worked at the embassy in Moscow Tuesday, accusing him of spying, marking the latest blow to the two countries’ worsening diplomatic relations. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) alleged that the British diplomat intentionally provided false information to enter the country as a cover for espionage work, “thereby violating Russian law,” according to state media TASS. The Russian Foreign Ministry subsequently revoked the diplomat’s diplomatic accreditation and ordered him to leave Russia within two weeks, TASS reported. Russia’s FSB claimed the diplomat was sent to Moscow to “replace” one of six alleged British intelligence officers that Russia expelled this summer. Meanwhile, Russia launched a “record” 188 drone attacks on Ukraine overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force on Tuesday.

According to the UNESCO study, 62% of surveyed creators said they don’t vet the accuracy of content before sharing it with their followers. The study comes in the wake of the 2024 US presidential election, in which social media influencers played a key role as an information source for voters. During the campaign, President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris harnessed social media influencers and podcasters with millions of followers, including Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper, to appeal directly to voters. And a separate survey from Pew found that more than half of American adults “at least sometimes” get their news from social media. Online influencers generally do not rely on official sources of information, such as government-issued reports and documents, the UNESCO study found.

For more than a year, the Israeli government has avoided holding itself to account for its failure to prevent the deadliest event in Israel’s history: the Hamas-led raid on Oct. 7, 2023. An independent commission, founded by survivors of the raid and relatives of Israelis who were killed and kidnapped, tried to fill that void on Tuesday, releasing a scathing report that blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top military commanders for years of faulty decisions that made Israel more vulnerable to invasion. Based on three months of interviews and public hearings, the commission’s 90-page report criticized the government’s decision to funnel money to Hamas, which allowed the group to entrench itself in the Gaza Strip in the decade before the attack. The commission, formally known as the Civil Commission of Inquiry of the Oct. 7 Disaster, condemned Mr. Netanyahu for sidelining high-level decision-making forums that might have stirred greater internal debate about the wisdom of such a policy.
