As Americans across the country voted early in record numbers ahead of Tuesday's election, it has become clear that they are motivated, arguably like never before. But it was my daughter's vote I placed inside the envelope," wrote David Frum on X (formerly known as Twitter) last week. She told NBC News that she had voted Democrat for many years before switching parties during the pandemic and will vote for Trump this year. Other issues she said are motivating her decision to vote for her daughter’s future are inflation and the price of groceries as well as her stance against mandatory vaccination policies during the Covid pandemic. “I chose freedom, decency and democracy — along with a bright, just and prosperous future for my five children and future grandchildren,” he wrote.

US officials said this week that around 8,000 North Korean troops were in Russia's Kursk region. The SVD sniper rifle, also known as the "Dragunov," is a semiautomatic Russian infantry sniper rifle "designed to engage enemy personnel and other unarmored targets at ranges up to 800 meters," according to the manufacturer Kalashnikov Group. Related storiesUkraine has previously released a video that appeared to show North Korean troops "being outfitted in Russian gear" at a Russian military training compound. American policy is at a crossroads, but that won’t necessarily translate to a turning point in peace negotiations, analysts say. That’s because nothing suggests Russia is ready to come to the table, regardless of who ends up in the White House. The scope of the war is also too large for a simple negotiation between Moscow and Kyiv, experts say. Attritional war playing into Putin’s handsUkraine is already outmanned, and Putin appears ready to accept a high number of casualties. European nations are scrambling to increase ammunition production for Ukraine to prevent backsliding, in the event that US support drops off.

One bit of clarity they’re sure to get: The Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision, due to be announced Thursday. The Fed lowered borrowing costs in September for the first time in more than four years while signaling additional rate cuts. But a slew of economic figures have been released since the decision, which is important because the Fed’s decision are guided by what those figures show. Investors are betting with near certainty that the Fed will deliver a quarter-point cut, according to futures. Lower rates could entice home buyers to come off the sidelines, and for businesses it could continue plans that have “baked in” lower rates.

The fee turned up in September 2019, after Trump placed 25% tariffs on steel, and hasn't gone away since. Small-business owners have already been facing tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, most of them from China, implemented by Trump in 2018. So far, the tariffs in force under both White Houses have cost Americans $79 billion, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimated this summer. The nation's roughly 33 million small businesses employ nearly half the nation's workers and generate more than 43% of the gross domestic product, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates. "Whether we like it or not, Asia is the bike manufacturing hub of the world," said Zagata, who raised prices by between 18% and 22% after the Trump tariffs took hold.

Despite making films for over 40 years, Tim Burton’s visual style — a signature blend of light and dark — continues to defy neat description. Burton devoured everything from horror films to Ray Harryhausen animations, science fiction B movies and Japanese Kaiju monster films. Beyond Hollywood, Burton’s work has been inspiring the world of fashion for decades. The late Alexander McQueen’s Fall-Winter 2002 show, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ featured a now-iconic Batman-esque parachute cape inspired by Burton’s work. Comcast is thinking about separating or spinning off NBCUniversal's cable networks. NBCUniversal's cable networks aren't growing anymore. That vision never materialized, in part because the media world's attention shifted from traditional pay TV to streaming, which devalued cable networks. The small media company wants to be the vehicle for a cable network rollup, CNBC reported in 2022. But even if Starz doesn't achieve its vision of a cable network rollup, it's possible a private equity firm may have interest in harvesting a group of cable networks for cash.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020.
