Ron DeSantis is asking state universities for the number and ages of their students who sought or received gender dysphoria treatment, including sex reassignment surgery and hormone prescriptions, according to a survey released Wednesday. The survey is being sent to the university board of trustee chairs by DeSantis’ budget director, Chris Spencer. “Our office has learned that several state universities provide services to persons suffering from gender dysphoria,” Spencer wrote. Driskell said DeSantis is trying to remake the state’s universities “in his own image” as far as what can be taught and how students can be treated. It says to protect students’ identities when completing the information.

The university police department and authorities in the city of Ithaca, where the Ivy League school of nearly 23,000 students is located, are investigating, the statement said. The school statement said the alleged crimes reportedly occurred off-campus at buildings affiliated with registered fraternities. The school officials did not name the fraternities. The statement added that there will be no parties until school staff members and student leaders are confident they can occur safely.

Hundreds of University of Florida students held protests this week criticizing the anticipated appointment of Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., to lead the school. Sasse has said that as university president, he would do his best to represent the views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. But for some, his candidacy has called to mind the university’s anti-LGBTQ history and the extent to which many of them feel it continues to sideline their needs and experiences, four LGBTQ students told NBC News. The university’s LGBTQ+ Affairs office, for example, has a high staff turnover rate, he said. He said a “silver lining” of the protests was that many LGBTQ students made their concerns more widely known.

Among state flagship universities, UGA has one of the country’s largest disparities between its proportion of Black students and that of Black high school graduates from the state — second only to the University of Mississippi. “Black students admitted to UGA — they have a lot of options,” said Alton Standifer, deputy chief of staff to the university president, referring to the competition among colleges to enroll Georgia’s Black students. Still, many Black students in Georgia choose to attend more diverse institutions or opt for a historically Black college or university. A reliance on SAT scores can disadvantage Black students, whose average SAT score in 2019 was 933, more than 180 points below that of white students. Selective public universities like UGA that used the Common App have seen an increase in applicants, including traditionally underrepresented students, such as Black students.
