A flurry of remarkably good economic news over the past week could create a daunting mandate for whoever is elected the next U.S. president: Don't mess it up. The whole damn world," President Joe Biden said Tuesday during an event announcing new infrastructure grants at the Port of Baltimore. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are both pitching themselves as the best steward of the future health of the U.S. economy. Trump has pledged universal tariffs on all imports from all countries, a sweeping immigrant deportation program, deepening corporate tax cuts and more. Economists and even some of Trump's own allies note that his proposed universal tariffs, mass deportations and tax cuts could, at least temporarily, send major shockwaves through the economy, triggering potential market crashes.

White sand, clear turquoise sea and lush trees swaying in the breeze. This might sound like a description of the Maldives — but it's actually what I experienced on a recent trip to Italy. The area was founded by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in the 1960s and now attracts the jet set. Airfare obviously affects travel costs, but I spent $1,500 for a week on the island, including flights from London. We stopped for a lemon granita at the Shardana restaurant, set among the trees overlooking the white sand Baia Sant'Anna beach.

All three titles are expected to thrive at the box office, both during their openings and as they run through the rest of the year. The physical screens are often bigger than traditional movie screens or have auditoriums that feature higher-quality sound systems or seating options. These screens account for 9.1% of the domestic box office, around $600 million in 2024. PLF receipts still represent a small portion of the overall box office, with most audiences seeing films on traditional digital screens. However, it's no small feat that PLF box office has grown 33% in just five years.

But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. Avis Molland died a free woman eight years later. There's a large US military presence in South Korea, and many Americans have brought their tipping habits with them overseas. Trump's plans could mean tax hikes for lower earners; Harris' proposals would target higher earners. This is the fourth in a five-part series about the impacts either a Trump or a Harris presidency could have on US consumers. Trump has proposed extending his slew of tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 — also known as the "Trump tax cut." But another part of Trump's tax policy — his plan to levy universal tariffs on all US imports — could end up undercutting this positive impact. AdvertisementTrump has floated lifting the $10,000 cap on the State and Local Tax deduction, known as SALT, from his 2017 tax bill.

The legislation also applied a $10,000 cap on the state and local tax deduction, and it roughly doubled the estate tax exemption (it now sits at $13.61 million for an individual). With the Magnificent 7 stocks floundering this week, and about 30% of the S & P 500 members breaking below their 50-day moving average in October, where can investors find emerging strength? The structure of the daily chart remains positive as long as Visa remains above the $290 price point, which now serves as potential support. The weekly RSI has remained above 40 during pullbacks in October 2023 and June 2024, demonstrating that the overall momentum picture remains bullish on the long-term time frame. Similar to the buy signal in November 2023, we see this as a sign of renewed bullish sentiment for Visa. And as long as Visa remains above moving average support, this payment processor could be headed to much further gains into early 2025.

By contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris's tax plan is expected to increase tax revenues by $1.7 trillion over 10 years, but at a cost of negative 2% to long-run GDP and 786,000 jobs. The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania estimates that, including her spending proposals, the primary deficits would increase by $1.2 trillion, and accounting for adverse economic feedback effects, primary deficits increase to $2 trillion. Higher deficits and higher debts, just with different paths to get there. One candidate proposes cutting taxes to improve economic activity but increase deficits, and the other proposes raising taxes and increasing spending by even more and growing deficits. If the deficit keeps increasing faster than our economy grows, so will the debt, inflation, and interest rates.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk speaks at a rally for former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York, October 27, 2024. Former President Donald Trump's top allies and surrogates, like Tesla CEO Elon Musk appear to accept that the Republican presidential nominee's policy plans could trigger a short-term economic thunderstorm. But they contend it will be worth the sunnier long-term outlook. "Correct: If I raise the tariff on just this particular idiosyncratic product, yes, right, it will be more expensive," Lutnick said in a Thursday interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box," responding to a question about whether universal tariffs would effectively become a short-term sales tax. Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, has also nodded to the potential consumer pain of Trump's vision for across-the-board tariffs, though he hedged that it would be worth the possible benefits.
