PROVO, Utah — A small herd of domestic llamas was spotted taking an evening stroll on the train tracks in Provo, Utah, on Thursday after the woolen creatures escaped from their owner, according to the Utah Transit Authority. Several emergency responders were dispatched to round up the five llamas after transit officials received reports of the animals wandering the Union Pacific line. The llama search did not delay train service, transit authority spokesperson Gavin Gustafson said. Whether the llamas had been caught was unknown as of 10 p.m. local time, about three and a half hours after crews were called to the area 43 miles south of Salt Lake City, Gustafson said. Details about how the llamas escaped and where they came from were not immediately available.

Almaty, Kazakhstan CNN —Several cities around the globe have reinvented themselves in recent years, but none more successfully than Almaty. Since the collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan’s largest city (population 2.2 million and growing) has evolved from a drab, run-of-the-mill Soviet metropolis into the urban star of Central Asia. “It’s an incredibly livable city,” says long-time American resident Dennis Keen, a historic preservation advocate and founder of Walking Almaty. Over and underground artThe Abilkhan Kasteev State Art Museum is filled with more than 20,000 works of art. Other good collections include the Ihlas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments (in a Russian-style wooden mansion built in 1908) and the ethnographic artifacts of the Almaty Museum.

CNN —Like many other Middle Eastern economies, Bahrain has been trying to move away from its dependence on fossil fuels. In October, the National Bank of Bahrain launched a Bitcoin investment fund, aimed at institutional investors — a first for the GCC. At the Gateway Gulf event, Bahrain’s Minister of Tourism announced the construction of 16 new hotels totaling over 3,000 rooms. However Al Khalifa believes that the success of its GCC partners will ultimately prove beneficial for Bahrain. “All of us are working together to increase economic activity, increase the pie for the whole region, and this rising tide will lift all of the economies of the region.”

Washington CNN —Just days after winning a comeback election, President-elect Donald Trump is evaluating how his campaign promises might translate into policy. As a candidate, Trump pledged to slap 60% tariffs on all goods coming in from China and 10% tariffs on goods imported from all other countries. “The way that President Trump looks at tariffs are not in isolation. Trump’s economic advisers – and the president himself – view the forthcoming tariff revenue as a way to offset that cost. “If he can use the tariffs as a means to an end, he’ll do that.”CNN’s Katie Lobosco contributed to this report.

The basic theory behind prediction markets is that a lot of people with money on the line can better predict an outcome than any one expert. “Financial markets are generally pretty efficient, and the evidence suggests that the same is true of prediction markets,” Eric Zitzewitz, an economics professor at Dartmouth, tells me. The shares trade between $0 and $1, and once the event is resolved, shares tied to the correct outcome pay out a dollar. If you bought Trump shares on Monday, when they were 58 cents, you can expect to make 42 cents on the dollar. Later that fall, the popular betting market PredictIt gave Hillary Clinton an 82% chance of beating Donald Trump.
