France said on January 5 that it would send the AMX-10RC armored vehicle to Ukraine. The "tank" vs. "armored vehicle" debate is a long and often contentious one, but AMX-10RCs are armored reconnaissance vehicles and not tanks, which usually have large-caliber main guns, heavy-duty armor, and tracks. Fighting there has become trench warfare, with incremental gains rather than sweeping armored offensives in which fast, armored scout vehicles excel. Armored vehicles are still vital on the battlefield, but an armored car may have limited utility against swarms of anti-tank missiles, attack drones, and smart artillery shells. What's important is that the West is sending armored fighting vehicles.
To do that, younger troops will have to unlearn some habits, the Marine Corps' top general says. New Marine recruits turn in cell phones at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in October. Targeting cell phones has been a feature of the fighting between Russia and Ukraine since 2014. Ukrainians and foreign governments have eavesdropped on Russian troops using unsecured phones to talk to each other and to their families in Russia. Amid rising tensions with China, the US military has sought to bolster its presence in Asia. US forces there may see the "most transformative year" in a generation in 2023, a US official said. Major changes to the US military presence in Asia face logistical and political hurdles, however. Other countries have sought more training with the US military or, in the case of Palau, to host US forces. There are opportunities for the US "to expand its access and deepen relationships" in both Northeast and Southeast Asia, said Thompson, a former US Defense Department official, but US leaders will have to reckon with the limits of those partnerships, especially in Southeast Asia.
A video showed a fighter jet crash landing at a military base in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday. The pilot was forced to eject from the F-35B aircraft after it spun out of control. The plane was landing at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth on Thursday when things went wrong. The aircraft, however, was being flown by a "US government pilot" at the time of the crash, he said. The next year, a Japanese F-35A crashed into the sea; however, the crash was attributed to pilot error.
US special operators are aiming to create "multiple dilemmas" for China, SOCOM's commander says. GehmannUS special operators need to continue "developing and strengthening the partner and ally piece that's a comparative and competitive advantage for this nation," Fenton said. Moreover, US special operators have been working closely with all US military branches to better understand how those branches operate and how SOCOM can support them in a conflict with China. The Pentagon's top special-operations official said in May 2021 that special operators could be "a key contributor" to resisting a Chinese attempt to seize Taiwan.
The Lighting Carrier conceptAn F-35B launches from USS Tripoli in April 2022. A light aircraft carrier embarks with fewer jets than a fleet aircraft carrier — as many as 20, compared to more than 50 on a fleet carrier — but it costs much less and is more versatile. US Marine Corps F-35Bs approach and land on USS Tripoli during an exercise in June. "There is no comparison between a J-15 and an F-35B," Thomas said, referring to China's main carrier aircraft. Smart bullets aren't new, but they're still early in development, and they have some drawbacks. If DARPA, aka the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has its way, smart bullets will become a very real thing. Beyond offensive combative measures, guided smart bullets can be used to defeat future threats from swarming UAVs to incoming missiles. Smart bullets currently availableAs of this writing, smart bullets aren't being deployed. Regardless, smart bullets could provide a new surgical option for snipers, infantrymen, and naval personnel.

US troops also have a new targeting system that makes the M777 even more precise. LCpl Samantha L. Jones/USMCIn 1979, the M198 155mm medium-towed howitzer entered service for the United States. While it would take two C-130s to deliver an M198 artillery system to the battlefield, the entire M777 setup could arrive in just one. That's more than all of the 155mm artillery rounds fired by the entire US military in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Wheelchair users are caught in the chaos, risking lost or damaged wheelchairs or even life-threatening injuries. Similar incidents have occurred, in which wheelchair users developed serious infections from an injury sustained during or after a flight, Brown said. On July 26, the Department of Transportation released the Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights, which outlines the ten fundamental rights of passengers with disabilities. Ansley added that it would also be ideal if wheelchair users could use their own wheelchair to fly. This could include carving a space at the beginning of the aircraft so that wheelchair users don't have to transfer to an aisle chair.
Modern Marine Corps scout snipers are required to study their history, to learn from the outstanding snipers that came before them. In many conflicts throughout US history, Marine Corps snipers have proven to be valuable assets on the battlefield. Carlos N. Hathcock:Carlos Hathcock USMC ArchivesIn Vietnam, Hathcock had 93 confirmed enemy kills and several hundred unconfirmed. That never mattered to him though, according to Charles Henderson's book, "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills." The only US military sniper with more confirmed kills than Mawhinney in Vietnam was Army sharpshooter Adelbert Waldron with 109 confirmed kills.

Since 2017, US military service branches have been rolling out new M17 and M18 handguns. The M17 and the compact M18 variant are the latest in a long line of sidearms that US troops have carried into battle since 1776. This flintlock saw service in the War of 1812 and remained the US Army's standard-issue pistol for over 50 years.
