The advance on Aleppo followed a shock offensive launched by insurgents Wednesday, as thousands of fighters swept through villages and towns in Syria's northwestern countryside. A ceasefire in Hezbollah's two-month war with Israel took effect Wednesday, the day the Syrian opposition factions announced their offensive. Turkish security officials said Thursday that Syrian opposition groups initially launched a long-planned "limited" offensive toward Aleppo, where attacks targeting civilians originated. Besides backing opposition forces, Turkey has also established a military presence in Syria, sending troops into parts of the northwest. The opposition groups also seized heavy weapons and military vehicles belonging to the government forces, the agency said.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump said he would require countries that are part of BRICS — a China- and Russia-backed group of emerging economies — to commit to not creating new currency or face 100% tariffs during his administration. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. BRICS had been made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa since 2011. The leader of one member country, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in 2023 proposed creating a common currency in South America to reduce reliance on the US dollar. Using BRICS currencies and banking networks outside the US dollar-denominated system could allow member countries such as Russia, China and Iran to circumnavigate Western sanctions.

If compromised, AI systems could be used to interfere with or take control of strategically important national space missions. Critical space infrastructure is susceptible to threats across three key segments: in space, on the ground segment and within the communication links between the two. "In many ways, the threats to critical infrastructure on Earth can cause vulnerabilities in space," Lonstein said. "The consequences of malicious cyber activities include loss of mission data, decreased lifespan or capability of space systems or constellations, or the control of space vehicles." Use of strict access controls, authentication, and error correction mechanisms can further ensure that AI systems operate with accurate information.

CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he wants to work “directly” with US President-elect Donald Trump and is open to his ideas, highlighting Kyiv’s eagerness to keep its most important ally onside as Russia intensifies its attacks. I want to work with him directly,” Zelensky said in an interview with Sky News released Friday, adding that he did not want people around Trump to “destroy” their communication. According to the US Department of State, the government has contributed $64.1 billion to Ukraine’s war effort since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Prior to winning the election, Trump repeatedly claimed that the Russia-Ukraine war would not have started if he had been president. He admitted that he was afraid Ukraine might lose the war, and particularly the independence of its people.

Zelenskyy told U.K.-based Sky News that offering Ukraine NATO membership while allowing Russia to keep for the moment territory it had captured could be a solution to end the "hot stage" of the 33-month-old war. "I urge you to endorse the decision to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance as one of the outcomes of the NATO Foreign Ministerial Meeting on 3-4 December 2024." NATO membership could then initially apply to only the part of Ukraine that Kyiv controls. "No one has offered us to be in NATO for one part or another part of Ukraine. The fact is, it is a solution to stop the hot stage of the war because we can just give NATO membership to the part of Ukraine that is under our control," Zelenskyy said.

Ukraine's navy has revealed a fresh paint job on some of its vessels, which appear to have adopted a World War I-era tactic of using dazzle camouflage. The Ukrainian navy shared the images on social media on Thursday, showing versions of the paintwork. The boats were pictured taking part in a demonstration for naval experts from Denmark, which is cooperating with Ukraine on various naval issues, Ukraine's navy said. Dazzle camouflage first emerged in World War I as a means to confuse enemy submarines and reduce their ability to effectively aim torpedoes. Ukraine's navy has no large ships on active duty and consists mainly of small vessels, like those seen in the recent images.

The offensive is the first time opposition forces have seized territory in Aleppo since 2016, shattering the stalemate of a war that never formally ended. Extremist Islamists including al Qaeda took an interest in Syria, taking up a common cause with the moderate Syrian opposition who did not welcome jihadist involvement. Analysts told CNN that the Syrian rebels are using a vacuum left by the group to advance in Syria. The new grouping is made up of a broad spectrum of opposition forces, from Islamist factions to moderates. The backbone of the SDF are Kurdish fighters from a group known as the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), which has previously fought other Syrian opposition groups.

Turkey wants the F-35s and may be willing to move the Russian air defenses that triggered the ban. According to Bloomberg, Turkey may agree to restrict its Russian S-400s air defenses in return for the US lifting sanctions. CNN —In a single post, the president-elect told the world what the end of the Ukraine war might look like. Kellogg, Trump’s 80-year-old former national security advisor, has laid out his peace plan in some detail, writing for the America First policy institute in April. Kellogg says more weapons should have been given before the Russian invasion, and immediately afterwards, to enable Ukraine to win. But that’s when the plan – which CNN has reported that Trump’s soon-to-be national security adviser is considering - stops being to Ukraine’s liking. The plan notes the United States manufactures 14,000 155 artillery rounds a month, which Ukraine can use up in just 48 hours.

Donald Trump may be more likely to get a peace deal from Russia if he places Ukraine in a position of strength, according to analysts. It's a move that may concern the US' European allies, with Kellogg previously having suggested handing over Ukrainian territory to Russia. Military and political leaders in Europe are warning that a deal that hands too much to Russia will likely just be a prelude to further conflict. In recent months, Russia has exploited Ukraine's lack of manpower and artillery, making significant advances in east Ukraine. Ultimately, achieving a lasting peace deal in Ukraine will depend on deterring Russia, not on walking away.
