Eric Schmidt, former CEO and Chairman, Google, speaks during the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California on May 2, 2023. Misinformation around the 2024 election will be rampant as new tools have made advanced artificial intelligence more accessible, according to Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google who co-founded Schmidt Futures. "The 2024 elections are going to be a mess because social media is not protecting us from false generated AI," Schmidt told Andrew Ross Sorkin on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Monday. Asked about the policy change, Schmidt said that social media should allow for "free speech for humans, not computers." "What social media should do is mark all the content, know who the users are, and hold people accountable if they violate the law," Schmidt said.

Dave Willner has had a front-row seat to the evolution of the worst things on the internet. He started working at Facebook in 2008, back when social media companies were making up their rules as they went along. It didn’t take long in the job before Mr. Willner found himself considering a familiar threat. “I am not surprised that it was a thing that people would attempt to do,” Mr. Willner said. “But to be very clear, neither were the folks at OpenAI.”For all of the recent talk of the hypothetical existential risks of generative A.I., experts say it is this immediate threat — child predators using new A.I.

Australia's safety watchdog said Twitter is the most complained about platform in the country for online hate. There are currently an estimated 1,000 employees left at Twitter, Insider reported in May. "A third of all complaints about online hate reported to us are now happening on Twitter. "eSafety research shows that nearly 1 in 5 Australians have experienced some form of online hate. One research group even found that the use of the N-word jumped by 500% on Twitter after Musk's takeover, Insider reported in October.

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks about the Facebook News feature at the Paley Center For Media in New York on Oct. 25, 2019. For months, Meta has been working on a Twitter-like, text-based social media network that would compete with Twitter and the bevy of clone apps that have gained prominence since Elon Musk took Twitter private in 2022. News of the plans have inspired a public spat between Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, culminating in a joking challenge to engage in a physical "cage match" fight in Las Vegas. But given deep cuts to trust and safety teams at Meta and throughout the social media industry, content moderation may prove to be a challenge. Many advertisers fled Twitter after controversial content surged in the wake of Musk's acquisition.

Then, a deep dive into MrBeast and what his YouTube empire says about the future of the internet. Reddit came along and said, oh, we need to protect Reddit from the rise of these large language models. So I don’t think they’re totally out of the woods. But I don’t think people would say it was a golden age for how safe the platforms fell to use. But I want to challenge you on this, because I don’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing if we have past peak trust and safety.

Washington CNN —Music publishers sued Twitter for more than $250 million in damages on Wednesday, alleging that the social media platform “breeds massive copyright infringement that harms music creators.”The lawsuit alleges that for years, Twitter has allowed users of its platform to share copyrighted songs without a license. Twitter’s alleged permissiveness around users sharing copyrighted songs, combined with the social network’s promotion of tweets with copyrighted music, has unlawfully helped fuel the company’s growth, according to the National Music Publishers’ Association, whose members include Universal, Sony and Warner Music Group. “Providing free, unlicensed music gives the Twitter platform an unfair advantage over competing platforms, such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and others.”Twitter’s competitors, the music publishers said, all pay licensing fees to rightsholders for the ability to use the copyrighted music. The lawsuit cites the sweeping layoffs under Musk’s ownership that have eliminated entire teams at Twitter. It also highlights Musk’s own views on copyright, including a screenshot of two of his tweets from prior to the acquisition.

June 10 (Reuters) - Twitter has refused to pay its Google Cloud bills (GOOGL.O) as its contract comes up for renewal this month, which could result in the social media company's trust and safety teams being crippled, Platformer reported on Saturday. The Information said Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March. Twitter hosts some services on its server and houses others on the cloud platforms of Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google, Platformer said. In March, Amazon warned Twitter that it would withhold advertising payments because of the company's outstanding bills to Amazon Web Services for cloud computing services, according to the Information. Musk ordered the company to cut infrastructure costs, such as spending on cloud services, by $1 billion, a source had told Reuters in November.

Democrats warn Musk after Twitter safety execs leave

After news broke last week that both Twitter's head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, and head of brand safety and advertising quality, A.J. Brown, had departed, four senators wrote in a letter to Twitter owner Elon Musk and new CEO Linda Yaccarino that they were concerned about Twitter's ability to meet its legal obligations. The Democrats asked the Twitter leaders several questions about whether and how the company has complied with the security and privacy obligations in the FTC consent decree. "Mr. Musk's behavior reveals an apparent indifference towards Twitter's longstanding legal obligations, which did not disappear when Mr. Musk took over the company," the senators wrote. "Regardless of his personal wealth, Mr. Musk is not exempt from the law, and neither is the company he purchased."

New York CNN —Linda Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal marketing executive, is preparing to take over the CEO role at Twitter from Elon Musk, weeks after the billionaire announced hiring her for the top spot at the social media company. The New York Times and The Information reported that Yaccarino is expected to officially start as Twitter CEO on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Musk is likely betting on Yaccarino’s ad industry chops to restore Twitter’s flagging advertising business. Even without the CEO title, Musk will retain significant control over Twitter as its owner. Following the DeSantis event, Yaccarino tweeted: “We just heard a rare and unscripted conversation, on a range of important topics, with a Presidential candidate — all launched on Twitter.

Internal Twitter documents show the platform's ad revenue down 59% year-over-year, The New York Times reported. Growing ad revenue will likely be a top priority for Twitter's new CEO Linda Yaccarino. "Almost all advertisers have come back or said they are going to come back," he told BBC in April. While some of those advertisers have returned, the new report shows that not enough have come back to make up for lost revenue. The problem will be top on the list for new CEO Yaccarino, whose rich advertising background must have appealed to Musk.

The lawmakers asked Musk and Yaccarino to respond to a series of questions about Twitter’s FTC obligations and whether the layoffs and resignations have hindered its ability to comply. Elon Musk under TwitterSince purchasing Twitter, Musk has said he’s laid off more than 6,000 employees, or roughly 80% of the company’s pre-acquisition headcount. Twitter is already under investigation by the FTC for possible breaches of its consent orders. But as both the FTC and now the senators have indicated, Twitter’s behavior under Musk is also covered by the consent agreements. House Republicans have alleged that the FTC probe is intended to “harass” Musk and represents an example of the “weaponization” of the US government.

The Treasury Department had warned it would be unable to pay all its bills on June 5 if Congress failed to act. Markets though seemed to have moved on to focus on what the Fed will do in two weeks as U.S. economic data bolstered the case for the Fed to stand pat. Twitter's head of trust and safety Ella Irwin resigned from her role at the Elon Musk-owned social media platform. Irwin ran the Twitter team that fought disinformation, removed offensive content and helped maintain Twitter's platform integrity. But Twitter has experienced significant challenges in stemming offensive content under Irwin's tenure and since Musk began serving as CEO. Irwin's departure comes at a turbulent time for the social media network, which was grappling with the dissemination of a conservative website's purported documentary on transgender people. The video was uploaded to Twitter's platform Thursday but was "visibility limited," preventing users from retweeting or commenting on it.

Twitter's head of trust and safety says she has resigned
  + stars: | 2023-06-02 | by ( Sheila Dang | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
June 1 (Reuters) - Twitter's head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, told Reuters on Thursday that she has resigned from the social media company, which has faced criticism for lax protections against harmful content since billionaire Elon Musk acquired it in October. Irwin, who joined Twitter in June 2022, took over as head of the trust and safety team in November when previous head Yoel Roth resigned. Irwin's departure comes as the platform has struggled to retain advertisers, with brands wary of appearing next to unsuitable content. Musk announced earlier this month that he hired Linda Yaccarino, former NBCUniversal advertising chief, to become Twitter's new CEO. Irwin has not addressed the reasons for her departure, but the move coincided with the company’s content moderation dispute with the Daily Wire, a conservative outlet. But the sudden and unexpected vacancy at Twitter could leave the company without a key content moderation official at a sensitive moment. That law, known as the Digital Services Act, will require so-called “very large online platforms” including Twitter to abide by tough content moderation standards by as early as August. For months, as Musk has increasingly welcomed more incendiary speech onto the platform Twitter had previously restricted, EU officials have been reminding Twitter of its content moderation obligations under the DSA. The warnings have also come amid mass layoffs at the company that have eliminated entire teams, including much of its content moderation staff.

The sudden departure of Twitter executives tasked with content moderation and brand safety has left the company more vulnerable than ever to hate speech. Following Irwin's departure, the company's head of brand safety and ad quality, A.J. Musk has dramatically downsized the company's workforce and rolled back policies that restricted what kinds of content could circulate. Twitter, under Musk, is the fourth most-hated brand in the U.S. according to the 2023 Axios Harris reputation rankings. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has recently played down concerns about the prevalence of hate speech on Twitter.
