From the beginning of President Biden’s ill-fated re-election bid, Democrats struggled to frame the race as a choice between two radically different visions, rather than a referendum on Mr. Biden’s age and abilities. But now that he has dropped out and Vice President Kamala Harris is cruising toward the Democratic nomination, her party sees fresh opportunities to turn the public’s attention back to the vulnerabilities of former President Donald J. Trump on key issues for voters, including abortion rights, fundamental democratic principles and questions of economic fairness. Democrats hope that Ms. Harris — a history-making former prosecutor who is nearly two decades younger than Mr. Trump — can draw a sharp new set of contrasts and tap into arguments that were out of reach for Mr. Biden, 81, starting with the issue of age but extending into matters of policy and personality. That is especially clear on abortion rights. Mr. Biden, a practicing Catholic, has long been uncomfortable discussing the issue, or even saying the word “abortion.” Ms. Harris, by contrast, speaks easily and openly about reproductive health and has held campaign events alongside women sharing their stories of miscarriages, abortions and challenges with fertility.

The official said that the Secret Service had even tried to deny a request from Trump's team to install metal detectors at his son Barron Trump's high school graduation in May, which the former president attended with his wife, Melania. The official told The Times that the Secret Service had argued that the graduation was not a "political" event before eventually caving in. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi previously said that "there's an untrue assertion that a member of the former president's team requested additional resources and that those were rebuffed." Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper. Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service, is set to testify before Congress on Monday.

“They keep saying, ‘He’s a threat to democracy,’” Mr. Trump told the crowd of thousands inside the Van Andel Arena. “That’s democracy.”Still, Mr. Trump showed little sympathy for Mr. Biden. “Unifying the party,” Mr. Trump said as he took back the microphone, “it’s beautiful to watch.”Michigan is seen as a critical battleground state for both Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden in November. President Biden’s decision to exit the 2024 presidential election is a fitting coda for a man whose life has been devoted to public service. Mr. Biden has served the nation well as its president. Majorities of Americans have consistently said they did not believe Mr. Biden could lead the nation for another term, citing longstanding fears about his age and fitness that have only grown in recent months. Mr. Biden himself has consistently warned that specter presents a profound threat to the nation and its democratic traditions. Mr. Biden has now done what Mr. Trump never will: He has placed the national interest above his own pride and ambition.

At his first campaign rally since he survived an assassination attempt last week, former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday launched a litany of attacks that suggested his call for national unity in the wake of the shooting had faded entirely into the background. Over the course of an almost two-hour speech in Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr. Trump insulted President Biden’s intelligence repeatedly, calling him “stupid” more than once. He said Vice President Kamala Harris was “crazy” and gleefully jeered the Democratic Party’s infighting over Mr. Biden’s political future. Even as Mr. Trump made numerous false claims accusing his political opponents of widespread election fraud, he presented the continuing push by some Democrats to replace Mr. Biden on their ticket as an anti-democratic effort. By contrast, Mr. Trump — who falsely insisted he won the 2020 election and whose effort to overturn it spurred a violent attack on the Capitol that threatened the peaceful transfer of power — presented himself as an almost martyr trying to protect the United States from its downfall.

Even before the debate, Mr. Biden had told confidants that he believed he had a far better chance than Ms. Harris of beating Mr. Trump. By making the case for himself publicly and privately, Mr. Biden has implicitly had to downplay her chances of winning. Investigators found a small drone in the car owned by the gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump — and believe it was used to survey the site of Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa., at least once before the shooting, according to law enforcement officials. Thomas Crooks, 20, visited the area near the fairgrounds used for the rally on July 7 — six days before the event — and appears to have made another trip the morning of the shooting, according to geolocation data found on one of his two cellphones, the officials said. At some point last Saturday, Mr. Crooks seems to have flown the drone to gather footage for a layout of the Butler Farm Show grounds using a preprogrammed flight path, according to an official briefed on the situation who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about a continuing investigation. The discovery of the drone was delayed when investigators found two rudimentary explosive devices in his Hyundai Sonata shortly after Mr. Crooks — a highly intelligent and technologically sophisticated community college graduate — was felled by a sniper after bloodying Mr. Trump’s ear, killing a man in the crowd and seriously injuring two other people.

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, walks upon arrival at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC, on July 1, 2024. The motions follow the ruling Monday by Florida federal court Judge Aileen Cannon tossing out Smith's prosecution of Trump over his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House. Cannon ruled that Smith's appointment as special counsel violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution. He is awaiting trial in Los Angeles federal court on federal tax crime charges, which Biden's lawyers likewise are asking a judge there to toss out. That ruling related to Smith's pending prosecution of Trump in Washington, D.C., federal court for crimes associated with Trump's attempt to reverse his loss to President Biden in the 2020 election.

Trump's stance could have major implications for Taiwan's dominance in semiconductor chip manufacturing should any potential conflict arise between Taiwan and China. And such a scenario would likely have a cataclysmic effect on the US economy should the global chip supply chain be disrupted. And Taiwan's microchip production is anchored by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, a global powerhouse. A recent report released by the Semiconductor Industry Association revealed that America's share of global chip manufacturing is set to increase to 14% by 2032. After Trump's latest remarks about Taiwan and the potential for tighter trade curbs on China, global chip stocks fell, with notable declines for Nvidia, TSMC, and Qualcomm, among others.

But there’s a small, powerful sect of Silicon Valley billionaires who are carving a path for the maybe-Trumpers and the MAGA-curious in the tech world. David Sacks, the billionaire tech investor, co-hosted a fundraiser last month at his San Francisco home and spoke at the Republican National Convention on Monday. In the last election cycle, the few Trump backers that existed in the Valley largely kept their support under the radar. Their numbers are still small, but they’re no longer hiding, and their wallets are open. Japan's yen scaled a six-week high on Thursday, spurring speculation of an official push, while the dollar nursed broad losses as markets prepared for U.S. rate cuts in a few months. "Many traders and Japanese investors, after intervention, were looking to reload on their trades," said National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril in Sydney. Interest rate markets are pricing more than 60 basis points of U.S. interest rate cuts this year and some 20 basis points of hikes in Japan, narrowing the wide rates gap that had encouraged investors taking on large short positions in the yen. So far this year the yen is the worst-performing G10 currency on the dollar, losing more than 9%, while the yuan is down about 2.2%.

J.D. Vance, Breaking the Beard Barrier

Not to mention the first millennial on a major party ticket. One unmistakable detail that — in the style of his running mate, Donald J. Trump — not only upended modern political wisdom, but broke a longstanding political taboo. The last bearded man elected president of the United States was Benjamin Harrison, in 1888. The last vice president with a mustache was Charles Curtis, who was Herbert Hoover’s veep. And the last major party candidate to try to break that clean-shaven streak was Thomas E. Dewey, who had a dapper little caterpillar on his upper lip and ran, unsuccessfully, for the highest office in 1944 and 1948.

Tucker Carlson’s return to prime time kicked off with a roar. Mr. Carlson, a Fox News star until his firing 15 months ago, brought the Fiserv Forum to its feet when he emerged onstage at the Republican convention on Thursday evening, his support from the Make America Great Again crowd clearly intact. The grin on his face suggested just how much he relished his return to the limelight. Mr. Carlson is freshly embedded in former President Donald J. Trump’s inner circle, and he delivered an unscripted monologue straight out of his old Fox News show, complete with off-color jokes and dark visions of a nation at risk of falling into tyranny should Mr. Trump not prevail in November. “You could take, I don’t know, a mannequin, a dead person, and make them president,” Mr. Carlson said to laughter.

Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin on Wednesday cautioned against voting for political candidates based solely on whether they have adopted a "pro-crypto" stance. The best example of this is, predictably, modern Russia," added Buterin, a Russia-born coder who built ethereum in his late teens. Buterin did not single out any names in his post of either political candidates, or of those opting to support them. It comes in stark contrast to the Joe Biden White House, which has been seen as hard on crypto. However, the perception that Biden is anti-crypto and Trump is pro-crypto has some Biden allies concerned enough to take their case directly to senior White House officials.

As Republicans head into the second day of their convention in Milwaukee, they are energized. Serious concerns about President Biden’s electoral hopes loomed even before the events of the weekend transpired. Mr. Biden’s advanced age and attendant campaign trail challenges remain. And now the iconic images of a bloodied Mr. Trump, fist in the air, seem to have raised Democrats’ concerns that they have no good options, only a slow march toward defeat. At the same time, with so many of Mr. Biden’s voters fiercely opposed to Mr. Trump returning to power, I suggested that we might actually not see polls move too much.

On Monday, former President Donald Trump selected the Republican senator from Ohio to serve as his running mate. He went from a "Never Trump Republican" to Trump's pick for vice president, and he supports a range of conservative issues, from increased tariffs to opposing abortion rights. When it comes to raising taxes, Vance also hasn't ruled out that possibility. Related storiesStill, on other issues like trade, abortion, and education, Vance has stayed behind Trump's policies. He also aligns with his party on issues like gun control, rejecting Democratic efforts for stricter gun laws.

US District Judge Aileen Cannon — who was appointed to the bench by Trump while he was president — ruled Monday that the appointment of Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is overseeing the prosecution, was unconstitutional. The legality of Justice Department special counsels has been the subject of some debate over the past two decades. Since then, the US Attorney General has appointed special counsels with less authority while relying on internal Justice Department regulations. AdvertisementDefense lawyers in special counsel investigations have routinely argued the appointment of these newer special counsels is unconstitutional. His lawyers had signaled that, on appeal, they would challenge the legality of appointing a special counsel in the first place.

Trump called Vance 20 minutes before he announced he’d chosen the Ohio senator on Truth Social, a source familiar with the process told CNN. The two had met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday, before the rally at which Trump was shot in the ear. Trump is betting that Vance articulating his evolution from Trump critic to supporter will prove much more potent than those older comments. “President Trump honored the Constitution. “I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said.

And if Trump wins the election in November, a millennial will be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The Ohio Republican has turned on the establishment and elite academe that helped make his name with the vehemence that only a defector can muster. But he has explained that he was wrong about Trump and now believes that he was a great president. Trump critics are also seizing on the pick to question Trump’s commitment to his new unity message after he escaped the assassination attempt. Ultimately, Trump is clearly comfortable with Vance, a favorite of his firebrand son Donald Trump Jr.

The bombshell ruling by Judge Aileen Cannon in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida — who was appointed to that position by Trump — ruling comes two days after a would-be assassin narrowly missed killing Trump during a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania. A federal judge in Florida on Monday dismissed the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump and two co-defendants, ruling that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith as prosecutor for the case violated the appointments clause of the U.S. Constitution. The ruling is just the latest in a series of controversial rulings and decisions by Cannon that have been seen as favoring Trump. Trump still faces three other pending criminal prosecutions, all of which he had referenced in his Truth Social post. It is not clear yet how that ruling will affect the election case against him.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

Donald Trump is on a winning streak, which is all the more remarkable because he's barely played the game. He's in the strongest position any Republican presidential hopeful has been in July since George W. Bush in 2000.
