MIAMI/KEY WEST, Florida, July 15 (Reuters) - Rising temperatures in Florida's waters due to climate change have sparked an extreme stressor for coral reefs causing bleaching, which has scientists concerned. Just within the last week, as the U.S. South struggles under a heat wave, NOAA has reported Florida water temperatures in the mid-90s Fahrenheit (35 C). Coral reefs create homes for millions of species of marine life, support healthy ocean food webs and protect coastlines, experts say. Florida's coral reefs are also a tourist attraction and help support the local economy. CNN —Amid the raging war and constant threat of Russian missiles, a successful heart transplant has been performed on a 6-year-old girl in Kyiv, authorities with the Heart Institute of Ukraine’s Ministry of Health announced on Monday. It was the first time a heart transplant had been performed in Ukraine on children so young, the institute said. “The operation went smoothly, the girl was extubated two hours after the operation,” Todurov said in a post on his official Facebook page. Ukrainian Transplant Coordination CenterThe Heart Institute released images from the operation showing the mother of the boy whose heart was donated standing by the girl’s bedside. The Heart Institute has purchased special generators so operations can continue during blackouts, and it has an autonomous water supply.

COPENHAGEN, July 7 (Reuters) - Coloplast (COLOb.CO) has agreed to buy Iceland-based Kerecis, a biologic wound care firm that uses fish skin to develop tissue-transplant products, for up to $1.3 billion, the Danish medical equipment maker said on Friday. "Kerecis represents an attractive opportunity to strategically strengthen Coloplast's presence in the advanced wound care market by entering the high-growth, U.S.-centric biologics segment," the Danish firm said in a statement. Coloplast said it expected the acquisition to be marginally dilutive to earnings in the short term but increasingly accretive from 2026-2027 onwards. As a result of the deal, Coloplast raised its long-term organic growth guidance to 8-10% from 7-9% previously, it said. Kerecis has developed and patented a technology platform based on intact fish skin from wild Atlantic cod, which is being used to treat burns and other complex acute and chronic wounds including diabetic, venous, trauma, and surgical wounds.

For BlueRock's experimental therapy, researchers took induced pluripotent stem cells, which are modified to regain the ability to form any type of specialised tissue, and transformed them into dopamine-producing nerve cells. When surgically implanted into the brain of a person with Parkinson's disease, the therapeutic cells are designed to restore neural networks destroyed by the disease. Initial trial results showed the cells multiplied and started making dopamine, an important brain signalling molecule which is lacking in Parkinson's patients. Parkinson's, for which there is no cure and which affects more than 10 million people worldwide, causes progressive brain damage.

The FDA first made Paxlovid available in December 2021 under emergency use authorization for high-risk individuals ages 12 and up. Both Pfizer and the FDA view the treatment as an important complementary tool to vaccination that can help high-risk Americans manage their Covid infections and ultimately save lives. For some doctors, another area of concern is Paxlovid "rebound cases." That's when patients who take the treatment see their Covid symptoms return or test positive shortly after they initially recover.
