CNN —A large red cargo ship named Pyxis Ocean set out on its maiden voyage this month. The ship, chartered by US shipping firm Cargill, has been retrofitted with two WindWings – large steel sails 37.5 meters (123 foot) tall, designed by UK company BAR Technologies and produced by industrialization partner Yara Marine Technologies. Huge kites and rotor technologies have been tried on cargo ships in attempts to reduce their dependence on diesel. John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, tells CNN that having the company on board has been essential in building momentum for WindWings. “We look forward to supporting the global shipping industry as it transitions to greener, cleaner propulsion and design,” he says.

“That is a staggering leap forward in comparison to what the industry is used to.”A rendering of JetZero's blended wing design. American aircraft designer and industrialist Jack Northrop created a jet-powered flying wing design in 1947, which inspired the B-2 in the 1990s. NASAIn 2020, Airbus built a small blended wing demonstrator, about six feet in length, signaling interest in pursuing a full-size aircraft in the future. Similarly, JetZero wants to simultaneously develop three variants: a passenger plane, a cargo plane and a fuel tanker. “Extensive aerodynamic testing and optimization are essential to fully realize the drag reduction potential of this innovative aircraft design.

Can You Pay a Credit Card with a Credit Card?

By Sarah BrodskyWhile it might seem tempting to pay off one credit card with another, credit card companies don’t permit this. That said, some credit card companies do offer the option to consolidate credit card debt and get a reprieve from paying interest. Why you typically cannot pay a credit card with another credit cardCredit card companies don’t allow cardholders to pay a credit card with another card because it would hurt their bottom line. “They’ve already extended you the credit, they’re going to get to charge you interest.”And credit card companies would owe money if they accepted payment by credit card. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) listens during a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., April 18, 2023. In addition to creating the regulatory commission, the proposed law would tighten antitrust law to forbid the companies from preferencing their own products over those of rivals. "This bipartisan bill would create a new tech regulator and makes clear that reining in Big Tech platforms is a top priority on both sides of the aisle," said Warren in a statement. Graham said the creation of the regulatory commission was "the first step in a long journey to protect American consumers from the massive power these companies currently wield." Amazon declined comment while Facebook and Google did not respond to a request for comment on the proposal.

Opinion: Vacations as we know it are over

On the contrary, the extreme weather conditions across southern Europe this summer are a wake-up call — a reminder that not even our vacations are insulated from the growing consequences of global heating. Even northern Europe would see a tripling of extreme heat events, which could be expected once every five years. Climate breakdown is set to become all-pervasive and affect every aspect of our lives and livelihoods, and already extreme weather can happen pretty much anywhere. This can’t go on, nor should it, both for the peace of mind of holiday-makers increasingly worried about growing extreme weather, and for the good of the planet. Holidays abroad need to be decoupled from flying, which means – as far as Europe is concerned – train, car or coach.

The US aerospace behemoths want to build, test and fly an emission-reducing, single-aisle aircraft before the decade is out. We’re trying to validate technology.”The first test flight of this full-scale demonstrator is set to take place in 2028. NASA hopes that one day the technology should serve about half of the commercial market through short- to medium-haul single-aisle aircraft. Airlines largely rely on single-aisle aircraft, which account for nearly half of aviation emissions worldwide, according to NASA. Boeing estimates that the demand for the new single-aisle aircraft will increase by 40,000 planes between 2035 and 2050.

A brief, failed revolt by Russian mercenaries in June raised doubts about Putin's hold on power. It also worried officials in China, which has its own history with "warlords," a US official said. They were unnerved by what happened two weekends ago in Moscow," Campbell said in an interview with The Wire China published on July 16, after several senior US officials visited China. China presented a peace plan in April — shortly after President Xi Jinping visited Moscow — that was widely seen as vague and self-interested. I took British Airways' Flying with Confidence course to help me overcome my fear of flying. And I know I'm not alone: up to 40% of Americans have a form of aerophobia, otherwise known as the fear of flying. So, in an effort to face my fears head-on, I recently attended British Airways' Flying with Confidence course. But in the same way that pilots always prepare for the worst kind of turbulence, aircraft designers do too. Breathing is keyOne of the main takeaways from the course was how to control my fear of flying through breath control.

Passengers aboard a Delta flight had to disembark using the jet slide Wednesday after their plane landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport without part of its landing gear extended. An inflatable slide extends from a door of the plane and firefighters appear to be helping passengers disembark on the slide. "While this is a rare occurrence, Delta flight crews train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios and flight 1092 landed safely without reported injuries." Controllers saw that the nose landing gear doors were open, but the gear hadn't descended and the pilots landed the plane without the nose gear. FRANKFURT, June 23 (Reuters) - Deutsche Bank's (DBKGn.DE) reported plans for possible job cuts at its German retail operations were roundly criticised by a union on Friday, foreshadowing tough labour negotiations ahead. This spike bodes well for the IPO market, bankers say, because both new listings and secondary stock sales rely on strong demand from equity investors. "Historically, follow-on activity of this magnitude should lead to animal spirits in the IPO market," said Daniel Burton-Morgan, head of Americas syndicate for equity capital markets at Bank of America Corp (BAC.N). The IPO market has been in the doldrums since the start of 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a spike in inflation fueled a bout of market volatility as investors fretted over U.S. interest rate hikes. The week of June 5 saw 19 follow-on and secondary stock sales in the United States, totaling proceeds of $6.6 billion, one of the highest weekly tallies since the end of 2021. As Cava prepares to make its public market debut Thursday, other restaurant companies will be watching closely while they decide whether to follow in the Mediterranean restaurant chain's footsteps. The last 18 months have marked the slowest initial public offering market since the financial crisis. Cava's IPO could help break that drought, as a handful of restaurants watch to see how the chain fares as they mull whether to jump into the public market themselves. "A successful IPO from Cava should open the door to more restaurant IPOs," said Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital. That bodes well for the restaurant companies waiting in the wings to go public.

How is Ukraine’s counter-offensive going so far?
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Tom Balmforth | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said Western equipment like battle tanks and armoured vehicles should help protect the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. "Ukraine's got choices," said Ben Barry, senior fellow for land warfare at International Institute for Strategic Studies. Those thrusts may indicate Ukraine's generals have their eye on Tokmak, an occupied town in Zaporizhzia region some 25 km from the front line. Military analysts saw it as unlikely this would become the focus of the main Ukrainian offensive. Images shared by Russian military bloggers showed destroyed or damaged U.S.-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and Leopard 2 tanks, headline items of military aid sent by the West for the counteroffensive.

Moscow's strategy in the south likely aims to maximise Ukrainian casualties before Kyiv can reach the main Russian line of defences about 10-15 km (6-9 miles) away, according to Lee.
