A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect. Strong, potentially damaging winds and storm surge are likely near where the system ultimately comes ashore. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.

The disturbance was 45 miles west of Cape Fear and traveling north-northwest at 7 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.

Seven people have now died in fires in Portugal since Sunday, including three firefighters, whose vehicle burst into flames on Tuesday. At least 17 have been killed in what authorities have called the worst floods to hit central and eastern Europe in decades. The mayor of Nysa in Poland ordered the evacuation of all 44,000 residents as water levels in the city’s river rose and threatened to send more floods through its neighborhoods. Crews battling three major California fires could get some relief from record heat and help from the weather as a cooldown preceded minor containment for the blazes. The pilots of a FedEx cargo plane couldn’t see the runway or the airfield at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. But about three miles out from landing, they grew uneasy when an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to take off in front of them. HANOI, Vietnam — A flash flood swept away an entire hamlet in northern Vietnam, killing 22 people and leaving dozens missing as deaths from a typhoon and its aftermath climbed to 141 on Wednesday. Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV said the torrent of water gushing down from a mountain in Lao Cai province Tuesday buried Lang Nu hamlet with 35 families in mud and debris. Floods and landslides have caused most of the deaths, many of which have come in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, bordering China, where Lang Nu is located. Lao Cai province is also home to the popular trekking destination of Sapa. Many roads in the province were blocked by landslides and unrelenting rainfall, said Sapa tour guide Van A Po.

CNN —Glenn Lowry, the longest-serving director of New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), is stepping down after three decades in the role, he announced Tuesday. Spencer Platt/Getty ImagesJoining MoMA from Canada’s Art Gallery of Ontario in 1995, Lowry is the sixth director in the storied museum’s 95-year history. Welcoming 2.7 million visitors a year, according to the latest figures, MoMA is the USA’s third-most-visited art museum after the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art and Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art. Through exhibitions, commissions and acquisitions, Lowry used art to address some of the most pressing social themes of the day. Tuesday’s announcement comes just over a week after Lowry sat down with CNN’s Richard Quest for an interview at MoMA.

Tropical Storm Beryl developed into a Category 1 hurricane as it hit the Texas coast late last night. A disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm Monday, and could become a hurricane before it reaches the U.S. Gulf Coast by midweek. Tropical storm watches are in effect for northeastern Mexico, as well as southern Texas. Potential Tropical Cyclone Six is expected to dump heavy rain and trigger flash flooding along the coast of northeast Mexico, southern Texas, southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi into Thursday morning, the hurricane center said. August's tropical cyclone activity "was a little below normal" in terms of the number of named storms, the hurricane center said.
