CNN —The San Francisco 49ers put in a dominant showing to beat the New York Jets 32-19 on Monday, spoiling Aaron Rodgers’ return to NFL action. Rodgers returned to NFL action for the first time since Week 1 last season. Thearon W. Henderson/Getty ImagesDespite the poor start, Rodgers soon showed why the Jets traded for him ahead of last season. The Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL's current dynasty, are only the 18th most valuable team in the league at $6.07 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations. The bulk of a team's revenue in a given season comes from the ballooning media rights fees that the NFL charges for its games. Contrast that with leagues like the NBA and NHL, where clubs receive a much bigger cut of playoff ticket revenue. Stadium ownership and operating rights are also a lucrative source of revenue for NFL teams. Perennial playoff teams can also be more attractive to sponsors because they can almost guarantee that thousands of additional people will be in their stadiums every year.

Last week, NFL team owners voted to allow an initial group of private equity firms to acquire up to a 10% stake of a franchise. "This isn't a case where private equity is going to come in and have influence on the franchise." Private equity has been eager to take stakes in sports as team valuations rise, mainly due to ballooning media rights deals. As investors, private equity firms often take management and board roles. Private equity investments typically have a set duration — it can range from three to seven years in many cases — and an expected return.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to allow private equity firms to take a maximum 10% stake in teams. The league has never allowed private equity investment before. No other league takes a percentage of the so-called carry — the percentage of a fund's investment profits that managers typically receive as compensation — for all private equity firms. The NFL has informally told investment firms that if they make a return on an investment, it wants a portion of the profits to be returned to the league. It was unclear if the NFL's plans to take a piece of profits would deter future investment from private equity.

That’s precisely why the Fed is poised to cut interest rates in September for the first time since 2020. Therein lies the one question on everyone’s mind: How aggressively will the Fed ultimately cut rates? A high threshold for jumbo rate cutsThe Fed makes its decisions on interest rates consistent with what’s happening in the economy. Fed officials have mostly signaled that they’re finally ready to cut rates, but some have still expressed some hesitance. But, for now, there’s no emergency demanding the Fed cut rates aggressively next month, or any time later in the year.

Speaking in his most closely watched speech of the year, Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, clearly signaled that the central bank was poised to cut interest rates in September. And while Mr. Powell stopped short of giving a clear hint at just how large that move might be, he forcefully underscored that the central bank stands prepared to adjust policy to protect the job market from weakening further and to keep the economy on a path for a soft landing. “The time has come for policy to adjust,” Mr. Powell said during the Kansas City Fed’s annual conference at Jackson Hole in Wyoming. “The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.”He then added: “We will do everything we can to support a strong labor market as we make further progress toward price stability.”

On Jan. 13, NBCUniversal's subscription streaming service Peacock showed its first-ever exclusive NFL playoff game — a 26-7 victory by the eventual Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs over the Miami Dolphins. For NBCUniversal, obtaining NBA rights helps guarantee sustainability in a fight for eyeballs against streaming behemoths such as Netflix , Amazon Prime Video and Disney +. Beginning with the 2025-26 season, Peacock will have about 50 exclusive national regular-season and postseason NBA games, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. New York CNN —The New York Times is getting out of New York endorsements. The newspaper’s editorial board on Monday announced that it will no longer endorse political candidates in New York state and local races. “While elections everywhere remain critical to the lives and experiences of our audience, the editorial board is ceasing the endorsement process for New York elections,” Kathleen Kingsbury, The Times’ Opinion head who oversees the editorial board, said in a statement. Notably, however, the board can continue making endorsements in presidential races, including in the upcoming November election, and it can still endorse political candidates in races outside of the state. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller on Wednesday suggested that interest rate cuts are ahead soon as long as there are no major surprises on inflation and employment. "So, while I don't believe we have reached our final destination, I do believe we are getting closer to the time when a cut in the policy rate is warranted." Keeping with statements from other policymakers, Waller's sentiments point to an unlikelihood of a rate cut when the Federal Open Market Committee meets later this month, but a stronger likelihood of a move in September. "Given that I believe the first two scenarios have the highest probability of occurring, I believe the time to lower the policy rate is drawing closer," Waller said. Williams noted that inflation data is "all moving in the right direction and doing that pretty consistently" and is "getting us closer to a disinflationary trend that we're looking for."
