Dec 1 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that Moscow was ready to listen if anyone wanted to hold talks on Ukraine. Lavrov, speaking at a news conference in the 10th month of the war, said Ukrainian allegations that Russia wanted talks in order to win time to regroup and rebuild its armed forces were absurd. He said Russia would also be willing to return to talks with the West if it changed its mind about the merit of discussing security proposals which Moscow floated in December. Advisers to President Biden say they hope the meeting with China’s Xi Jinping will help communication between the two powers. NUSA DUA, Indonesia—When President Biden meets Chinese President Xi Jinping for highly anticipated talks Monday, the two sides will seek to dial down tensions that have run high for months and establish a better understanding of each other’s priorities over the coming years, U.S. and Chinese officials said. Both sides said the meeting is unlikely to yield major policy breakthroughs. But Mr. Biden’s advisers said they hope it will help improve communication and set expectations on significant issues between the two powers, including their differences over Taiwan, China’s relations with Russia and recent missile tests by North Korea.
The White House said in a statement after the meeting that Biden raised concerns about human rights and China’s provocations around Taiwan. “President Biden and President Xi reiterated their agreement that a nuclear war should never be fought and can never be won,” a White House readout said, referring to the threat of nuclear weapons use in Ukraine. U.S. President Joe Biden meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' summit in Bali, Indonesia, November 14, 2022. Planning for Monday’s meeting predated Pelosi’s trip, and discussions continued between US and Chinese officials despite Beijing’s furor. “Xi is not an enigma to President Biden,” a senior administration official told CNN.
State broadcaster TRT and other media quoted Erdogan as saying: "The West, and especially the U.S., is attacking Russia seemingly endlessly," without elaborating on what he meant. "Of course, Russia is displaying great resistance in the face of all this," Erdogan was quoted as telling reporters on a flight from Uzbekistan. We think the best way for this is a path from dialogue to peace," Erdogan said, adding Ukraine's view would be important. There have been no public attempts to reconvene peace talks between the two sides since initiatives to bring about a ceasefire in Istanbul during the first weeks of the conflict broke down without progress. Russia said on Friday that it was committed to achieving the goals of what it calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine, adding such goals could be achieved through peace talks but that Kyiv's position meant holding peace talks was impossible.

The IAEA has said it will not yield to political pressure and its job is to account for all nuclear material. The E3 and the United States will hold talks in Paris on Monday to discuss Iran ahead of the board meeting, two diplomats said. Iran has recently installed hundreds more advanced centrifuges, machines that enrich uranium, at its underground plants at Natanz and Fordow. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear technology is solely for civil purposes.
Nov 9 (Reuters) - Two shareholders that together own more than 5% of France's Orpea (ORP.PA) have called for a shareholder meeting at the beleaguered care homes group as they try to rally opposition to its planned debt restructuring plan. "An unprecedented shareholder ruin is now emerging", family-owned Mat Immo Beaune and investment group Nextstone said in a letter sent to Orpea on Tuesday and reviewed by Reuters. Orpea said in June an independent audit had found evidence of financial wrongdoing, and in October warned of asset impairments and said it had requested talks with creditors. French media outlet l'Agefi on Monday reported ESG-driven fund Mirova had sold its 4% stake in Orpea. Shares in Orpea, which have lost 90% of their value this year, were down 2% at around 1100 GMT.
Kohl's said Tuesday that CEO Michelle Gass is leaving the company for a new opportunity as its sales continue to fall. In a separate release, Levi Strauss & Co. said Gass will join the company in early January as president and step into the role of CEO within the next 18 months. Kohl's — and Gass — have been under pressure from investors. Its push for new leadership intensified after Kohl's terminated talks this summer to sell to the Franchise Group, owner of The Vitamin Shoppe. The board appointed Tom Kingsbury, a Kohl's director since last year, to serve as interim CEO.
Polls show issues like climate change and abortion are important but the economy may be the driving factor in a state that is one of the poorest in the country and also a top global oil producer. First-term Republican incumbent Yvette Herrell is known as a defender of the Permian Basin oil and gas sector, a region she represents. RIO GRANDE RUNS DRYSome voters in West Side and South Valley Albuquerque areas believe fossil-fuel-driven climate change is harming their quality of life and the livelihoods of farmers. Vasquez has been hit with attack ads saying his policies will cost the state tens of thousands of oil and gas jobs. Herrell, a target of the League of Conservation Voters and other green groups, said New Mexico's emission controls meant the state's oil and gas industry was far cleaner than foreign competitors and did not contribute to climate change.
CNN Business —Delta Air Lines pilots intensified their push for improved pay by insisting they will strike if they do not get a new contract. With 96% of members participating in an Air Line Pilots Association union vote, 99% of Delta pilots “authorized union leaders to call a strike, if necessary, to achieve a new contractual agreement,” the union said. Delta pilots say they are working under an outdated contract from 2016. “Delta pilots are not on strike, so this authorization vote will not affect our operation for our customers,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement. “Delta and ALPA have made significant progress in our negotiations and have only a few contract sections left to resolve.
JOHANNESBURG, Oct 19 (Reuters) - South African mobile operator Telkom (TKGJ.J) said on Wednesday bigger rival MTN Group (MTNJ.J) had terminated talks to buy the former in what would have created the country's biggest telecoms company. Telkom said it could not offer MTN assurances to enter into exclusive talks sought by the country's second biggest telecoms service provider. It withdrew the offer later only to come back last month with a revised offer asking Telkom to buy it out. "MTN terminated discussions... as Telkom was not in a position to provide MTN with assurances around exclusivity," Telkom said in a statement. The talks between Telkom and MTN were at an early stage and had not progressed to due diligence, Telkom said, adding that it had not received any binding offer from MTN.

MPS (BMPS.MI) had scheduled a board meeting on Tuesday to set the terms of an up to 2.5 billion euros ($2.4 billion) share issue, the Tuscan bank's seventh in 14 years after an 8.2 billion euro bailout in 2017. Rocky markets and the size of the cash call, equivalent to more than 10 times MPS' current market value, have complicated talks over the share sale. The banks have long seen it as too risky to bring to the market without a pre-committed core of investors. The new shares will value MPS above healthier peers, exposing underwriters to likely losses on any shares left on their books, bankers and analysts say. On Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that MPS had secured some 30 million euros ($29 million) from local not-for-profit banking foundations in its home region.

BUDAPEST, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Hungary should prepare for a prolonged war in neighbouring Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Monday, sharply criticising European Union sanctions imposed on Russia which he said have "backfired", driving up energy prices. Orban, long at odds with the EU over some of his policies seen in Brussels as anti-democratic, urged a ceasefire to end the war and said the sanctions against Russia were dealing a blow to Europe's economy. "We can safely say that as a result of the sanctions, European people have become poorer, while Russia has not fallen to its knees," Orban said. "This weapon has backfired, with the sanctions Europe has shot itself in the foot." Orban, whose government is in talks with the European Commission to secure billions of euros in EU funds blocked over rule-of-law concerns, said his government would launch a "national consultation" asking Hungarians about sanctions.

Here's what parents of successful kids have in common, according to research. Children with parents who stepped in to provide instructions frequently displayed more difficulty regulating their emotions later, the researchers wrote. "Too much direct engagement can come at a cost to kids' abilities to control their own attention, behavior and emotions. When parents let kids take the lead in their interactions, children practice self-regulation skills and build independence," Obradović wrote in the study. The parents tend to take parental leave.
