BMW said on Monday that it would invest 600 million pounds, or about $750 million, to build electric versions of its popular Mini car models in Britain. The German manufacturer’s move allays fears that the combination of Brexit and the shift to electric cars would pose a dire threat to automobile manufacturing in Britain, but questions over the sector’s long-term future remain. BMW’s announcement is the third major piece of good news for Britain’s beleaguered car industry in recent months. Tata Group, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, said in July it would spend 4 billion pounds to build a battery plant in western England. And last week, Stellantis, the leading maker of commercial vans in Britain, began producing electric-powered vans at its plant near Liverpool, after a £100 million investment.

London CNN —BMW announced Monday that it would invest £600 million ($750 million) in building two new electric versions of the Mini in the United Kingdom. The commitment by the German automaker will secure the future of Mini production in Oxford, where the original classic version of the small car was born 64 years ago. Almost a year ago, BMW told the Times newspaper that it planned to shift all Mini production from Oxford to China for efficiency reasons. “Mini has always been aware of its history — Oxford is and remains the heart of the brand,” Stefanie Wurst, head of the Mini brand at BMW, said Monday. Robots work on the Mini production line at the BMW plant in Cowley, near Oxford.

High-tension power lines are pictured outside a Tata Power sub station in the suburbs of Mumbai, India, August 8, 2017. At the same time, India's power emissions climbed 4.5% to new highs on the back of record use of high-polluting coal, which generates roughly 75% of India's electricity. SOFT PATCH/HIGH POINT OVERLAPDuring the April-June window, when India's emissions exceeded Europe's, India's total power use levels rose on high demand for air conditioning in the hottest months of the year. These conflicting approaches to energy sector management reflect the starkly different developmental phases of each market. India's government has established ambitious long-term goals for boosting renewable energy generation and lowering power sector emissions.

But the talks have faced difficulties over potential job losses because the new style furnaces require fewer staff. About 8,000 people are employed by Tata Steel in Britain and Sky News cited industry sources as saying the company had warned that it may need to make as many as 3,000 redundancies in the future. India's twin growth engines face turbulent weather

MUMBAI, Sept 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - India’s gross domestic product grew 7.8% in the April to June quarter, its fastest pace in a year. The print preserves the South Asian nation’s title for the fastest-growing major economy, yet the eye-popping level may not sustain. A patchy monsoon and high food costs threaten the twin engines behind the latest headline figure. Meanwhile, El Nino weather conditions mean the winter agriculture crop could be as weak as the summer yield, keeping prices high for longer. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.

India's EV market is small, with Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) dominating sales that made up less than 2% of all cars sold last fiscal year. All sources declined to be identified as the talks are still ongoing and a final decision has not been made. Founded in 2015, Leapmotor has less than 2% share of China's fragmented EV market, where it sells four mass market electric models. This has also forced MG Motor India to find local investors like JSW so it can raise equity. Leapmotor also has been in partnership talks with other major automakers, including Stellantis (STLAM.MI) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), according to media reports.

Aug 31 (Reuters) - Britain's car production rose for the sixth consecutive month in July as automakers continued to recover from global chip shortages, an industry body said on Thursday. "Six months of growth shows that British car production is recovering and, with electrified models increasingly driving volumes, the future is more positive," said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. The total number of cars produced, however, remained 29.4% lower from the pre-pandemic levels seen in July 2019. The UK's car industry, a significant driver of manufacturing and exports, got a boost last month when India's Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) committed to build a major EV battery plant in Britain to supply its Jaguar Land Rover factories. SMMT had said in July it could take five more years for Britain to return to producing 1 million or more cars a year.

"There is an understanding with Tesla's proposal and government is showing interest," said the official, who is familiar with the issue. Indonesia, for example, has offered to reduce import duties from 50% to zero for EV makers planning investments, a move seen aimed at attracting Chinese players and Tesla. Tesla first tried to enter India in 2021 by pushing officials to lower the 100% import tax for EVs. One of the sources said Tesla told Indian officials a potential India factory could operate at full capacity by 2030. Outside the United States, Tesla currently has a plant in Shanghai - its largest factory worldwide - and one outside Berlin.

Indian interlopers can disrupt global mining M&A
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Pranav Kiran | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
BENGALURU, Aug 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - An Indian tycoon has a powerful motive to throw himself into some global mining M&A. Sajjan Jindal is looking to pull together a consortium to take a 75% stake in the coal unit of Canadian miner Teck Resources (TECKb.TO), according to Bloomberg. Such a move would pit his $23 billion Mumbai-listed JSW Steel (JSTL.NS) against a rival $8 billion bid by Swiss commodities giant Glencore (GLEN.L). In North America, JSW already has steel plants in Ohio and Texas, and coal mining facilities in West Virginia. Anchoring a consortium bid makes sense but if push comes to shove, Indian tycoons can afford to be aggressive interlopers.

CNN —Tomatoes are off the menu in India as Burger King becomes the latest fast food chain to be impacted by rising prices of the culinary staple. Last month, McDonald’s (MCD) announced that many of its restaurants across the country would be temporarily removing tomatoes from their burgers, citing quality issues and shortages of supply. “Going forward, the spike in vegetable prices, led by tomatoes, would exert sizeable upside pressures on the near-term headline inflation trajectory,” it wrote in a statement. Last week, Subway announced its Indian outlets would charge 30 rupees ($0.40) extra for a cheese slice in most sandwiches, Reuters reported. As for tomatoes, Indian cuisine is unthinkable without the ubiquitous fruit.

Apple supplier Foxconn is beginning production of the iPhone 15 in India as the company moves forward with its effort to diversify its manufacturing from China, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. After a meeting with India Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC that India represents a "huge opportunity." Apple has more recently ramped up iPhone production in India, assembling more than $7 billion worth there in the last fiscal year, Bloomberg earlier reported.
