Kaitlin Armstrong, 35, has been charged with murder and faces up to 99 years in prison in the May 2022 shooting death of Wilson, a competitive gravel and mountain bike racer. Wilson had been shot five times when she was found at a friend's home before a race she was among the favorites to win. Armstrong's SUV was seen at the home where Wilson was staying the night she was killed. Federal authorities tracked Armstrong to Costa Rica, where investigators said she tried to change her appearance and used several aliases while attempting to establish herself as a yoga instructor in that country. The trial judge placed a gag order on the case in August 2022, preventing her defense attorneys or prosecutors from commenting.

Two Australians, Jess and Daniel Baldock, bought a plot on the Indonesian island of Sumba. He encouraged Jess Baldock to buy a plot of land, sight unseen, in the beachside village of Kerewe, which is surrounded by mangroves and waterfalls. "The only time we left the site was on everyone's lunch break or after work," Jess Baldock said. Some walls were built, knocked down, and rebuilt until workers reached the standard that Daniel Baldock knew they needed to achieve.

While there has been a lack of quality and depth across many of the sports in Santiago, it was never more glaring than at the first day of athletics. The Pan American region has for decades produced some of the world's greatest sprinters, including Usain Bolt. Brazil's Izabela Rodrigues claimed the first gold of the athletics competition winning the women's discus while the women's long jump title went to Colombia's Natalia Linares. Chile's Lucas Nervi delighted a small but supportive opening day home crowd, taking top spot on the podium in the men's discus. The most successful people in life can recognize a window of opportunity, and know when and how to seize it. It's not unlike surfing, according to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. A "surfer's mindset" can help you succeed in both life and business, Ohanian told students in a keynote address at his alma mater, the University of Virginia, last week. Afterward, you might "paddle back out ... and wait five hours for another good wave," he continued. "That mindset is the right mindset for a life well-lived," he said.

Maggie Peddicord and her boyfriend, Joseph, bought a school bus and traveled in it for one year. To fund their journey and bus expenses, they both started working on the handiwork app Taskrabbit. Before I started on Taskrabbit, I worked as a research assistant at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Once we moved in and started traveling, it cost about $500 a month for gas and other repairs and about $250 a month for groceries. Joseph networked with Taskrabbit clients by finding people who might be interested in selling or purchasing a yacht one day.

DIVE IN Language programs abroad go beyond apps or even conventional classes by combining instruction with immersive experiences where the language is spoken. IN LIMA and I am in bed, half awake, mentally conjugating verbs in Spanish. Grammar hasn’t had such an insidious hold on my consciousness since high school, when my failure to learn French convinced me I was facing a monolingual future. And so I signed up for a week of classes at Peruwayna, a language school located in the bustling Miraflores district of Peru’s capital. The curriculum’s rigor attracted me—each day of the roughly $223-per-week “super-intensive” program would start with four hours of small group classes.

The same inevitable supply-and-demand dynamic is about to wash over us again with large language models and generative AI. AI models are trained on masses of data from the past. Humans are good at learning quickly from a small amount of data, while AI models need mountains of information to train on. Soon, human content creators will be vying for attention with content generated by AI models. Marks celebrates winning the world title at Lower Trestles in California. Pat Nolan/World Surf League/Getty Images“I feel like I had a special connection with the ocean already that day, and my board felt amazing,” says Marks. But for Marks, winning the world title was the culmination of years of hard work, a goal that had formed in her mind even before she became the youngest surfer to qualify for the Championship Tour aged 15. But this year’s world title, Marks says, was even more satisfying after last season’s four-month absence from competitions. “The world title to me was my biggest goal ever,” says Marks, who won the Tahiti Pro event in August.

And now it’s fall, when the continent really comes into its own as the leaves – and visitor numbers – start to drop. A recent report from luxury travel network Virtuoso named Paris, London and Florence as the most booked cities for fall travel. “Fall is one of the best times to visit Europe because of the vast variety of interests [the season] can cater to,” says Mina Agnos, president of luxury travel company Travelive. Florida's Volusia County is known as the "shark bite capital of the world." The area is a hot spot for shark attacks, especially on September afternoons, per the ISAF. Data from the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File (ISAF), which describes itself as "the world's only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks," shows that Florida is the global leader in shark attacks, with 259 from 2012 to 2021, well ahead of Australia in second place. But it is in Volusia County — which includes the renowned Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach — on Florida's east coast that has been dubbed the "shark bite capital of the world." The sharks that hunt the waters of Volusia County and are mostly involved in biting incidents include Blacktip, Bull, and Requiem sharks.

The coffee table book is the rare genre defined not only by content but by destination. Sure, not all of these oversized tomes wind up marooned beside a scented candle in someone’s living room — some make it all the way to hotel lobbies and the waiting rooms of cosmetic dentistry practices. I’ve seen volumes on Panama hats, rattan and a mall in Dubai — worthy topics of study, surely, but perhaps not majestic enough to merit the heft of the format. Jimmy Metyko’s SHAPING SURF HISTORY (Rizzoli, $55) is, though sneakily. But what a scene to witness.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - American surfer Caroline Marks powered her way to her first world title on Saturday, while Brazil's Filipe Toledo went back-to-back to claim his second championship with a hard-fought win over surprise finalist Ethan Ewing from Australia.
