At least five game show contestants were "shamelessly exploited" and subjected to "unreasonable, unsafe" working conditions on Amazon Prime's "Beast Games,” a California civil action said this week. "Beast Games" has been billed as a reality competition program with $5 million in prize money, according to Amazon which acquired streaming rights to the show. "Defendant production companies and Amazon shamelessly exploited the labor of approximately (redacted) people who served as contestants," according to lawyers representing the plaintiffs. The 50-page complaint also redacted details of how plaintiffs allegedly suffered and broadly suggested that work conditions were unsuitable. There was also "insufficient medical staff to attend to potential and actual injuries during" production, lawyers for the contestants said.

SAN DIEGO — The Home Depot agreed to a nearly $2 million settlement in a case that alleged it overcharged customers, charging more for items at checkout than the items' advertised prices. In an emailed statement responding to a request for comment about the settlement, Home Depot said, “To ensure consistency for our customers, we’ve updated the timing of our price changes." The settlement includes $1.7 million to be divided among the district attorneys' offices of Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Alameda, San Bernardino and Sonoma counties for consumer law enforcement. "This settlement is a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and underscores our commitment to safeguarding the rights of consumers in our community," Gascón said. Lawyers for Washington state will have past grocery chain mergers – and their negative consequences – in mind when they go to court to block a proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger. Albertsons and Kroger own more than 300 grocery stores in the state and control more than half of grocery sales there. They are trying to get the case dismissed, arguing a state court isn’t the proper venue to consider a nationwide ban. Such violations are called “scanner violations,” the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said in a press release Thursday. “False advertising and unfair competition are serious offenses that undermine consumer trust and distort the marketplace,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. A judge on Thursday dismissed two criminal counts against Donald Trump in his Georgia election interference case, but kept intact the top racketeering charge and other counts against the former president and other defendants. Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee also tossed out a third count that had been lodged against a number of Trump allies. The third count the judge tossed — numbered as Count 14 in the indictment — was criminal attempt to commit filing false documents. In March, judge tossed out three counts of solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer that had been lodged against Trump. Trump's appeal is set to be heard in oral arguments at the Georgia Court of Appeals in December.

Don't get caught up in the debate on large-cap versus small-cap stocks — the real Goldilocks opportunity lies in mid-cap stocks, according to Goldman Sachs. "Today, mid-cap equities offer investors superior earnings growth at a reasonable price compared with large-caps," Ma wrote in a Tuesday note. "Mid-cap stocks have typically outperformed both large-caps and small-caps during the 12 months following the first Fed rate cut in an easing cycle," she added. In addition, mid-caps have "stronger fundamentals" compared with small-cap names, Ma noted. Here are some of Ma's favorite mid-cap names that are both high quality with potential to grow.
