Now you’ll tell me that’s wishful thinking …. Gail: Hey, in our current political climate, there are worse things than wishful thinking. And we do have a likely Republican nominee who’s under indictment for virtually every nonviolent crime on the books except double parking. I keep thinking Tim Scott is campaigning hard for that job, although now he has suspended his campaign. You’ve got better Republican insight — see anybody on the stage you could imagine on Trump’s ticket?

Israelis spent 18 years watching Hamas turn to its military advantage every Israeli concession — including free electricity, cash transfers of Qatari funds, work permits for Gazans, thousands of truckloads of humanitarian goods. But while Israelis are still processing the horror from the south, the threat of war looms on every side. Bezalel Smotrich, the far-right finance minister, has even suggested effectively banning the Palestinian olive harvest, ostensibly for security reasons. In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with whom Israel had been engaged in a careful rapprochement, has reverted to Islamist form. To many Israelis, there’s a distinct echo of what happened at German universities beginning about a century ago.

There ought to be a similar sign in every Jewish organization, synagogue and day school, and on the desks of anyone — Jewish or not — for whom the security and well-being of the Jews is a sacred calling: “Every day is Oct. 8.”What was Oct. 8? It wasn’t just the day after the single greatest atrocity against Jews since the Holocaust, an atrocity whose details were impossible to miss because the perpetrators made sure to film them. It was the day when that atrocity was celebrated. On Oct. 8, Jews woke up to discover who our friends are not. Let’s be clear: They and their sibling groups are being used as Jewish beards for aggressive antisemites.

Gail Collins: Bret, I know you’re busy writing about your reporting trip to Israel, and I am looking forward to reading all your thoughts. (I guess that’s another definition for the term “manspreading.”) On the economy, voters prefer Trump over Biden by a 22-point margin. And a whopping 71 percent think Biden is too old to be president, as opposed to just 39 percent for Trump. As a matter of law, I think Trump belongs in jail. Gail: I know Trump appears more energetic, but he’s really only a whole lot louder.

But on that winter night in 1985 even Knight's mother, Hazel, sensed something was different as she watched the scene. In the years following the chair-throwing game, former players told stories of Knight's practices, with some alleging physical, verbal or emotional abuse. The chair stopped near the sideline and Reid helped retrieve it, linking him with Knight for college basketball eternity. Longtime public address announcer Chuck Crabb had the unenviable task of telling fans Knight had been ejected. "I get up, and I'm up and down a lot, and one time I'm standing up and I looked across the floor and (hear) 'Coach Knight?'"

Problems began early on Sunday when it was discovered the route for the women's 20 kilometre race walk won by Peru's Kimberly Garcia was nearly three kilometres short. After hitting the pause button the United States gold medal machine was back in gear on Sunday adding seven to their total. The Americans opened the Games piling up 59 gold over the first five days but managed just two over the next three. The U.S. also won three of the six gold on offer at the canoe slalom while the other three went to Brazil. Brazil finished the day claiming the gold in women's handball beating their great rivals Argentina 30-18 and in women's basketball with a 50-40 win over Colombia.

Opinion | A Plan to Defeat Hamas and Avoid a Bloodbath
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( Bret Stephens | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +6 min
Hamas’s master plan, as Bennett sees it, is roughly as follows: Provoke, via its gruesome massacres on Oct. 7, a massive Israeli ground invasion. Already, nearly 800,000 Gazans have fled from north to south, despite efforts by Hamas to keep them in place. “They’re asking for fuel not for their citizens but for their tunnels,” which are used exclusively by Hamas fighters and their allies. “I don’t want to get into a Viet Cong-type war of tunnels,” Bennett says. But the question isn’t whether Bennett’s plan is perfect or if there are gaps to fill.

As an incentive, he promises Robert an early release if he succeeds in capturing them. Ghost-catching proves easier, at least initially, than the daily grind confronted by Robert’s school friends and foes, all of whom have their own tragic back stories. “You’re not the only one in trouble,” the ghost of a slaughtered young Black man reminds him. This concentrated attention sharpens the suspense; we’re tightly focused on the questions: Will Robert survive, and if so, what will it take? His transformation tracks the novel’s own capacity to be, at once, a supernatural historical novel and a straight-up page-turner.

As with many other Palestinian journalists, Said’s primary source of income was working with foreign reporters as a “fixer,” someone who could arrange difficult meetings, translate from Arabic, show you around. Said had an independent streak and he was no fan of Yasir Arafat, which made him particularly helpful in cutting through the Palestinian Authority’s propagandistic bombast. With Said, I interviewed senior Hamas leaders in Gaza, officials in Ramallah, retired terrorists in Nablus, political dissidents in Jenin and construction workers in Hebron. The Palestinian territories, by contrast, are republics of fear — fear of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and of Hamas in Gaza. During the first major Israel-Hamas war, in 2008 and 2009, Palestinian groups claimed the death toll was mostly civilian, with roughly 1,400 people killed.

But nowhere does he mention the deep visceral hatred of Hamas and associated groups toward Israel. It was always apparent that not long after the Oct. 7 massacre Israel would lose the public relations war. Israel does not deliberately target civilians. No serious defender of Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 massacres argues that the lives of Israeli children are worth more than those of Gazan children. Hamas would be considered “heroes” in the eyes of most of the world and its leadership would have attained political legitimacy.

One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

Oct 20 (Reuters) - Shares of mid-sized U.S. banks fell on Friday after a string of earnings reports heightened investor concerns that the boost to lenders from the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes was tapering off. Regions Financial (RF.N) dropped to the lowest level since March, when an industry crisis began following an outflow of deposits that engulfed three banks. The lender, shares of which were last down 11% at $14.71, said it expects net interest income (NII) in the fourth quarter to decline about 5% from current levels. Huntington Bancshares' (HBAN.O) stock dipped 1.3%, while Comerica (CMA.N) dropped 6.6%, dragging down the S&P 500 Banks index (.SPXBK) by 2.1%. Huntington Bancshares posted an 8% drop in third-quarter profit as interest income declined.

That the massacres were “pure, unadulterated evil.” That there is “no excuse” for what Hamas did. Four days after the Hamas attacks, Trump also called Hezbollah, without reprobation, “very smart.” About Vladimir Putin, he said, “I got along with him very good.”Very good. Now Biden is going to Israel. That path is a long one, but Biden gets the big thing right — the former is the basic precondition for the latter. No Israeli leader can ever allow a Palestinian state to exist if a group like Hamas has even the whisper of a chance of gaining power.

UnitedHealth's profit beat and slight raise in annual forecast set the stage for other insurers in the industry that suffered a nearly $60-billion wipeout in market value in June, on fears of a spike in medical costs. UnitedHealth said in July it expects quarterly medical costs to be "a little bit lower" sequentially. In the third quarter, the company's medical loss ratio, the percentage of spend on claims compared to premiums collected, was 82.3%, versus 83.2% in the second quarter.

Stashing money in safe assets is paying off — and another bank has just hiked the yield it pays on a 1-year certificate of deposit. LendingClub bumped the annual percentage yield on its 1-year CD to 5.65%, an increase of 15 basis points. That places LendingClub's 1-year CD some 55 basis points above the median CD peer rate, according to an analysis by Stephens, and it makes the bank's offering the top-paying CD within Stephens' coverage. "Following the market now anticipating a higher for longer rate cycle, we've seen a reversal of the CD rate cuts initiated in September by a few of our online banks," he said. The upside of buying a CD is you get to lock in your rate for the duration of the time you hold the instrument.

With an increasingly health-conscious U.S. population and a bread industry that looks immensely different from what it was just a few decades ago, it may come as a surprise that Wonder Bread is still around. In fact, it makes up a sizable portion of its parent company Flowers Foods' overall portfolio, alongside Nature's Own and Dave's Killer Bread, Flowers Foods' two most popular brands. In the first half of the 20th century, white bread accounted for as much as 30% of the American diet. The rise of industrial white bread mirrored World War II-era fears of immigrants, many of whom owned small bakeries at the time. While Wonder Bread has somewhat fallen out of favor, people do still eat white bread, and Wonder Bread remains a profitable part of the Flowers Foods portfolio.
