An army of Chinese-controlled social media bots is attempting to influence voters in Alabama, Texas and Tennessee while denigrating Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, according to research published Wednesday by Microsoft. The troll network has “parroted antisemitic messages, amplified accusations of corruption and promoted opposition candidates,” according to Microsoft. The bots amplified support for Blackburn’s election rival while spreading claims that she took money from pharmaceutical companies. Moore, McCaul and Blackburn are all running for re-election next month. The Microsoft researchers found the influence effort did not result “in high levels of engagement.” The report did not provide any metrics for how many Americans viewed the relevant social media posts.

Michelle Panning, a relationship coach, documented herself trying "rejection therapy" for 30 days. While not an officially recognized form of therapy, 2 therapists said it's a form of exposure therapy. It inspired Panning to try it herself, documenting a 30-day rejection therapy challenge on her TikTok channel. While "rejection therapy" isn't a research-backed form of therapy (it was originally coined as the name of a card game by developer Jason Comely), both Goldberg and Farina said that gradual exposure to rejection can help build confidence. Former British nurse and convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby on Thursday lost an attempt to appeal against her conviction for trying to murder a newborn baby, amid questions over the fairness of her trials. Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. Letby attended the hearing by videolink from prison and sat impassively as the judge stated the court’s reasons for refusing her application. She can now only challenge those convictions if the Criminal Cases Review Commission refer those cases back to the Court of Appeal. Since her trials, Letby’s conviction has come under a spotlight, following criticism by some experts of medical and statistical evidence presented by the prosecution.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. Buttigieg said there are investigations into other airlines, although he said that “American Airlines appear to be one of the worst offenders.”“The problems that we have uncovered in our investigation are not confined to one airline,” Buttigieg said. Morgan Stanley is expanding the use of OpenAI-powered, generative artificial intelligence tools to its vaunted investment banking and trading division, CNBC has learned. Tickets for the 2023 Series, in which the Texas Rangers clinched their first championship, cost about $776 on average across five games, TickPick said. The previous most expensive World Series was in 2016 between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland, when the average ticket cost $1,691. It’s also the first time in more than four decades that the Yankees and Dodgers will meet in the World Series, since a 1981 matchup. Balance is important for injury prevention, and those who are unable to balance on one leg for more than five seconds could be at risk of falling more, Kaufman said. If someone is unable to stand on one leg for more than five seconds, Kaufman recommends making an appointment with a physician. “If we practice standing on one leg, we’ll get better at standing on one leg. That’s great but it’s not going to solve all balance problems and fall risk that happen with aging. … People should work on all aspects of balance — static, dynamic and overall strength, including but not limited to standing on one leg.”To improve your balance, Lubetzky recommends fitness or balance classes, such as yoga classes, that usually aim for about 30 or 60 seconds of balance on each leg.

Gold prices surged to a record high on Wednesday as the conflicts in the Middle East and uncertainty surrounding the upcoming U.S. election spurred demand for safe-haven assets. Gold prices fell over 1% after hitting a record high on Wednesday, as a stronger dollar and a rise in U.S. Treasury yields countered support from safe-haven demand linked to the Nov. 5 U.S. election and Middle East war. Spot gold was down 1% to $2,721.12 per ounce as of 12:25 p.m. EDT (1410 GMT) after hitting a record high of $2,758.37 earlier in the session. However, gold could see the $2,800/oz level by the week's end on safe-haven demand, Haberkorn added. The dollar index rose 0.3% to near a three-month high, making gold less appealing for other currency holders, while U.S. bond yields climbed to a three-month high.

It took less than five seconds for the building in southern Beirut to be reduced to rubble. Videos circulating on social media and verified by NBC News, showed several men watching the strike on Lebanon's capital from a distance, standing by their cars as the building crumples. In another video, one man can be seen running from the strike as a colossal bang rings out. “They targeted two buildings, not one,” a man can be heard shouting in the third video. Two explosions can be heard in several of the videos, although it unclear where the second blast came from.

California, Colorado and Hawaii will soon allow their residents to vote on ballot measures that would remove language from their state constitutions prohibiting same-sex marriage. The landmark 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, guaranteeing same-sex couples across the country the right to marry, makes these state bans unenforceable. However, these ballot measures seek to proactively protect these marriage rights should Obergefell ever be overturned. Without Obergefell, there is federal legislation that would keep same-sex marriage rights mostly, but not entirely, intact: the Respect for Marriage Act. It’s a personal issue for LGBTQ couples who had to navigate a time when same-sex marriage wasn’t legal or straightforward.

Oil prices ended down 7% last week and are lower this year-to-date, despite Middle East tensions. Oil prices have been depressed this year because China — the world's largest oil importer — is in a prolonged economic downturn. Last year, they each accounted for 11% of the world's oil supply. This means that Saudi Arabia is looking to corner a larger market share instead of targeting higher profit margins by restricting output. Advertisement"But the problem is when oil prices spike, it sends oil companies searching for temporarily profitable oil," he added, referring to the US shale boom as the most recent example.
