TOKYO — A regional airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday after a U.S. bombshell, most likely dropped during World War II to stem “kamikaze” attacks, exploded near its runway, causing nearly 90 flight cancellations. Miyazaki Airport shut its runway after the explosion caused a crater 23 feet wide and nearly 3 feet deep in the middle of the taxiway next to the runway, according to a Japanese transport ministry official. No injuries were reported, but live cam footage showed an airplane had been taxiing nearby just two minutes before the explosion, according to local broadcaster MRT. Multiple unexploded bombs have previously been found at Miyazaki airport, the transport ministry official said. More than 79 years since the end of the war, unexploded bombs from the intense airstrikes are still found across Japan today.

Authorities in India have summoned executives of a ticketing platform after furious Coldplay fans failed to secure tickets for the British rock band’s upcoming concerts in Mumbai and complained of unchecked scalping. Many of them are directing their anger at the platforms selling tickets — and calling on officials to take action. On Monday, the website Viagogo showed the lowest-tier tickets available for $1,500 and the highest-tier tickets for as much as $4,000. A third show for Jan. 21 was added the day tickets went on sale due to “unprecedented demand,” BookMyShow said. “These websites are selling tickets for 20, 30, 40 times more,” she said.

Disputes across the country are brewing over the role of local election boards and how much power they have to question – or even throw out – election results. In Georgia, for instance, Trump-backed members of the state election board recently passed controversial rules that could allow local election boards responsible for certifying results to conduct investigations that threaten to delay certification. One of the Georgia rules, the “Reasonable Inquiry Rule,” would allow election officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results. The petitioners in the case argue that the rule would give partisan board members a wide ability to cast doubt on, or even reject, election results. In some cases, the threat of legal action has been enough to deter officials from pursuing challenges to the certification process.

When President Joe Biden took office, he immediately halted border wall construction. “Vice President Harris believes in tough, smart solutions to secure the border, keep communities safe, and reform our broken immigration system,” Ehrenberg said. The border bill would have provided 1,500 more border personnel, upgraded technology and kicked off the “immediate resumption” of the border wall construction that was underway in 2021, according to its text. Del Cueto’s union supported the bipartisan border bill that is the basis for Harris’ border plan. “What I would say to Vice President Harris is she’s been there for 3 1/2 years.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines executives on Thursday outlined for Wall Street their vision to boost profits: extra legroom seats starting in 2026, assigned seating, international partnerships and overnight flights. Southwest’s new plan comes as its leaders seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management, which has called for leadership changes. He had served as CEO of AirTran, the airline Southwest combined with in 2011, and was a consultant to Southwest after the merger. Southwest has supported Jordan despite calls for his replacement by Elliott, which didn’t immediately respond to the airline’s plan it laid out on Thursday. He called Southwest’s plan intentional and detailed.

Florida ranks sixth among states with the largest shares of homeowners who don't have meaningful insurance. Putnam County, in the northern part of the state, is at 32.9%, while in Miami-Dade County, nearly 25% lack homeowners insurance that would protect them from calamity. In Miami-Dade County, 33.5% of homeowners pay $4,000-plus a year, ranking it in the top 10 among the country's most populous counties. Curtis, who has lived in Taylor County for 40 years and is a former forester, said many of her neighbors can't afford to pay for insurance. Her insurance doesn't cover hurricane damage, so McDonald will anxiously await news from home until the storm passes, she said.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines raised its third-quarter revenue forecast on Thursday, announced its board authorized $2.5 billion in share buybacks and detailed a host of changes to its business model as it seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management. Southwest executives are presenting their vision for the company's future at the airline's Dallas headquarters on Thursday in an investor day presentation. Southwest executives will try to convince investors that it is on the right track to boost profits and increase revenue. A day earlier, Southwest told staff it will slash its service in Atlanta next year and could cut more than 300 flight attendants and pilots from the city in an effort to reduce costs. Elliott later told Southwest mechanics' union that it still wanted a leadership change at the top of the carrier.

New York CNN —Southwest Airlines’ substantial changes to its business and boarding process are coming – but not for a while. Southwest announced in July it would move away from the open seating model it has been known for throughout its 53-year history. It also announced it would offer premium seating for the first time. Part of the reason Southwest isn’t rolling out its assigned seating model sooner is that premium seating will take some time to reconfigure in the planes. It did not give details for when the premium seating with more legroom between seats would be available.
