Netflix, which is in a quiet period ahead of earnings, declined CNN’s request for comment. In November, Netflix aired its first-ever live sports event, and its third-ever foray into live programming, called “The Netflix Cup,” a crossover competition between Formula 1 drivers and professional golfers. “We are investing heavily in increasing our live capabilities,” Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company’s earnings call in October. Next, Netflix plans to experiment with a new type of live programming: award shows. But even before the announcement, the number of shows and original programming Netflix churned out had already hit its peak, according to data analyzed by MoffettNathanson.

Last year, banks opened 2023 by forecasting layoffs, including for the investment bankers who suddenly had nothing to do following the pandemic-era M&A and IPO boom. Citigroup kicked off 2024 ominously, warning that it will lay off as many as 20,000 employees by 2026. The bank expects 2024 expenses to increase further to total $90 billion, up $2.8 billion from 2023, and much of that will be focused on hiring. CFO Barnum on Friday said the bank is gearing up for a "rebound in the investment banking wallet." Headcount declined 3% to 80,006 from 82,427, while compensation expenses rose to $24.5 billion from $23 billion.

Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. Read previewSam Altman's brief ousting as OpenAI CEO didn't just thrust the company further into the global spotlight amid reported personality clashes. It's also highlighted a bigger ethical debate in Silicon Valley: how fast companies should move when pushing out AI technology. Broadly speaking, the debate lies in whether you think that moving full-speed ahead on AI technology will save the world or you think the industry needs to slow down. One key Silicon Valley backer of the idea is veteran venture capitalist Marc Andreessen . His advice to Silicon Valley: "I would encourage any watchers of the industry to not get stuck in a divisive set of rhetoric."

Struggling to energize his campaign, DeSantis this week privately encouraged his donor network to support a newly formed super PAC that's taking over advertising responsibilities. The super PAC has also paid for the bulk of his TV ads and almost all of his organizing. On Aug. 8, the DeSantis campaign announced a staff shakeup, replacing its campaign manager and hiring Polyansky from the super PAC to serve as deputy campaign manager. Polyansky is an Iowa campaign veteran who has worked on several presidential campaigns in the state. DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo said it was “totally false” to assert that DeSantis coordinated any campaign strategy with the super PAC.

It could help Meta boost its open-source Llama AI initiatives, as some companies look to diversify away from relying on a single company's large language model. Its AI research team is considered, with Alphabet's DeepMind, one of the most esteemed groups in the tech industry. Yann LeCun, Meta's AI chief, responded to the post with a curt "Yup." Meta could benefit if companies continue to seek multiple AI vendors, much like firms now rely on multiple cloud providers. The more developers access and improve Llama, the more Meta can potentially lower its overall operating and technology research costs, among other benefits.
