These notorious groups dominated organized crime in Chicago and New York for decades –- until prosecutors brought them down with one sweeping charge: racketeering. Blakey has helped draft racketeering laws in at least 22 statesIt’s not a specific crimeSimply put, racketeering means engaging in an illegal scheme. Prosecutors must prove a pattern involving at least two instances of racketeering activity to convict someone under the law. It’s purposefully broadCongress passed the RICO Act in 1970 to combat organized crime. But racketeering is “not only associated with organized crime,” Blakey says.

In battleground Pennsylvania, a must-win state for Harris, Biden spoke to a Philadelphia conference attended by leaders of historically Black colleges and universities. The divided ground game by the vice president and her boss-turned-top surrogate, aides say, is all part of a plan. Even watching Harris do what he failed disastrously to do during his own debate with Trump, Biden has evinced only pride in his vice president, not bitterness. In 2000, Vice President Al Gore sought distance from scandal-marred President Bill Clinton as he campaigned against George W. Bush. Biden is now one of several high profile surrogates the Harris campaign will seek to deploy.

An investigator has backed the World Anti-Doping Agency’s handling of a case involving 23 Chinese swimmers who failed drug tests weeks before the Tokyo Games and said WADA had not been complacent nor shown bias toward China. Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier, who was handpicked by the global anti-doping agency, said in a preliminary report in July that WADA did not mishandle the case involving the swimmers, who tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) but were cleared by a Chinese investigation. Cottier reiterated those findings in his final report on Thursday but also criticized WADA for failing to challenge Chinese anti-doping authorities (CHINADA) for not following all of the procedures laid down in its anti-doping standard. The case prompted a backlash from athletes and national anti-doping authorities, who questioned WADA’s processes and complained about a lack of transparency in the case. “The ongoing failure to investigate and to answer the critical question of whether the 23 positive tests were due to contamination or intentional use will haunt athletes around the world for years to come.”

"Still not my best thing, but getting a bit more comfortable just being me as I get older." As the Facebook cofounder enters his 40s and reflects on his decades at the helm of Facebook, one thing is increasingly clear: Zuckerberg is in his unapologetic era.

Trump had requested the delay to avoid the "politically prejudicial" impact a public sentencing could have on the election. The sentencing might not happen at all if Merchan's next major hush-money decision, now due November 12, overturns Trump's verdict or the indictment itself on presidential-immunity grounds. But Trump would have had to suffer — in person — through the sentencing proceeding itself. Only after sentencing would Trump have faced the possible loss of his liquor licenses in New Jersey. Trump has fought to overturn his conviction on immunity-based challenges lodged in state court and in federal court.

In a report aired on Sunday, the broadcaster spoke to wolfberry farmers and merchants in a region spanning 14 towns in Jingyuan County, Gansu Province. Sodium metabisulfite is sometimes used in food preservation but is prohibited in the local wolfberry industry, state media reported. The practice had become so common that workers spoke of it as an industry standard, the outlet reported. Since his early days as China's top leader, Xi Jinping has promised to crack down on food safety breaches, saying they're central to how people perceive the government. Allegations of excessive sulfur fumigation in the Chinese traditional-medicine industry have surfaced before, leading retailers to often sell wolfberries and other products as "sulfite-free."

The basic problem: It's unclear how these free services could support new, Hollywood-style programming even if they wanted to. Now, with YouTube making the jump to TV screens and "free, ad-supported TV" (FAST) services having a moment, where does that leave Hollywood? Tech and legacy media will battle over free TV in the coming monthsLooking ahead, the major players already ahead in free TV will likely continue to gain share. Free streaming may seem like a way for Hollywood to claw back viewers. If not, it's hard to say what winning in the battle for free TV will actually get them.

Despite its cheeky title, Sabrina Carpenter's new album "Short n' Sweet" arrived on Friday with a tall order to fill. TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in a surprise move Wednesday, announced he will not run in the upcoming party leadership vote in September, paving the way for Japan to have a new prime minister. Kishida was elected president of his governing Liberal Democratic Party in 2021 and his three-year term expires in September. His drop out of the race means a new leader who wins the party vote will succeed him as prime minister because the LDP controls both houses of parliament. Local election losses earlier in the year eroded his clout, and LDP lawmakers have voiced the need for a fresh face ahead of the next general election. It involved more than 80 LDP lawmakers, mostly belonging to a major party faction previously led by assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
