BERKELEY, California, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Meghan Holst studies the broadnose sevengill shark, so she was naturally concerned when record-setting rain this year altered the shark's nursery grounds in San Francisco Bay. Next, perhaps, will come California Fish and Game Commission protections for the sharks in San Francisco Bay, which she considers a nursing and pupping ground for a species believed to be in decline. San Francisco Bay is one of the world's only known year-round nurseries for the species, Holst said, making the habitat critical to monitor. [1/4]FILE PHOTO-Researchers cast lines to catch broadnose sevengill sharks from their vessel in the San Francisco Bay, California, U.S., June 15, 2023. So if something happens to San Francisco Bay, then we might lose an entire cohort of these sevengill juveniles," Holst said.

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) — A former California police officer turned serial killer who was on death row after being convicted of murdering six people in the 1980s has died of natural causes, authorities said. Anthony Sully, 79, died Friday at a medical facility outside the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, where he had been housed for decades, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Marin County Coroner’s Office will determine Sully’s official cause of death, the department said in a news release Monday. The victims were beaten, stabbed and shot inside an electrical supply warehouse in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983. Three of the bodies were found stuffed into barrels dumped at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The mandatory raise would apply to all fast food restaurants in California that are part of a chain with at least 60 locations nationwide. The agreement ends an tense standoff between labor unions and the fast food industry that started last year when Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law creating a Fast Food Council with the authority to raise wages of fast food workers up to $22 per hour. In exchange for a $20 minimum wage, labor unions have withdrawn their legislation to make fast food companies liable for their franchise operators' labor violations and lawmakers have stripped funding for the Industrial Welfare Commission. The Fast Food Council created in the original legislation would still exist, but it would only have the authority to set wages, not workplace standards.

The dating app told employees to start working from an office 2 days a week or lose their jobs. The Communication Workers of America union said about 80 of its 178 workers rejected the RTO order. Last month the LGBTQ+ dating app told employees to starting work in the office two days a week from October or face dismissal after August 31. A representative for Grindr told Bloomberg the union claims were without merit and that it was "returning to the office in a hybrid model in October." The adherents of the "Yes In My Backyard," or YIMBY, movement believe that America's housing crisis comes down to the fundamental tension between supply and demand. Today, nearly 75% of residentially-zoned land in the US is restricted to single-family housing — detached homes designed for one family. Folks are like, 'Oh, we're in a housing crisis for the very first time. Ground zero for the modern YIMBY movement was California, where sky-high home prices forced people to reconsider their attitudes toward development. The city didn't allow new multiunit buildings to be taller or wider than the single-family homes they replaced, making construction less financially attractive to developers.

Gen Z is giving up on college

"The world is rapidly evolving — and so is the college experience." Srivastava is one of a soaring number of Gen Zers who has decided to skip college altogether. The widening gap between the value and the cost of college has started to shift Gen Z's attitude toward higher education. They're not as interested in the typical "college experience" — whiling away four years rooming with friends and drinking at frat parties. But other members of Gen Z are taking a hard look at the "essence" of college.

Most of the land purchased is in the southeastern portion of the county, with parcels stretching from Fairfield to Rio Vista. Billionaires want to build a new city in rural California, but they're encountering wavering support from locals and lawmakers. Solano County homes are among the most affordable in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a median sales price of $600,000 last month.

What if you built a new city from the ground up? Mr. Sramek, a former Goldman Sachs trader, had moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to make it in tech. He was a European immigrant smitten with the energy of local start-ups, but he preferred more walkable cities like Zurich. Soon, he began taking fishing trips to Solano County on the San Francisco Bay’s eastern edge. A rural corner of the county eventually became the centerpiece of a plan hatched by Mr. Sramek to build a city from scratch.

In 2017, Michael Moritz, the billionaire venture capitalist, sent a note to a potential investor about what he described as an unusual opportunity: a chance to invest in the creation of a new California city. The site was in a corner of the San Francisco Bay Area where land was cheap. He painted a kind of urban blank slate where everything from design to construction methods and new forms of governance could be rethought. And it would all be a short distance from San Francisco and Silicon Valley. “Let me know if this tickles your fancy,” he said in the note, a copy of which was reviewed by The New York Times.

"Over 90 percent of the excess energy on earth due to climate change is found in warmer oceans, some of it in surface oceans and some at depth." Put simply, the greenhouse gases serve to trap more heat, some of which is absorbed by the ocean," Kirtman told CNBC. In addition to the daily record on July 31, the monthly sea surface temperature for July was the hottest July on record, "by far," Copernicus said. CopernicusThese record sea surface temperatures arise from multiple factors, including the El Niño weather pattern, which is currently in effect. "These climate variations occur when sea surface temperature patterns of warming and cooling self-reinforce by changing patterns of winds and precipitation that deepen the sea surface temperature changes."

Gaslighting: What it really is and how to address it
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
The concept of gaslighting originated from the 1944 film “Gaslight” and the 1938 play on which it was based. Signs you’re being gaslitThere are other common misconceptions about the nature of gaslighting, experts said. What pushes these behaviors into gaslighting territory has to do with what the person you’re dealing with says and their intentions behind it. The degree to which a person gaslights someone else can vary, but gaslighting is always emotional abuse, whether intentional or not, experts said. Talking to a therapist can help you get an objective perspective and see more clearly any signs of gaslighting behavior and psychological abuse, Kennedy said.

The Google-owned hotel is situated on a newer campus in Mountain View, California, that it opened last year. A Google spokesperson noted that the company regularly runs specials for employees to take advantage of the company's spaces and amenities.

The San Francisco Bay Area has ruled the technology industry for decades, from the early days of personal computers to the social media boom. The report, which the Washington think tank released on Thursday, said generative A.I. And the winners, so far, are San Francisco and San Jose, Calif. While that may not be surprising, the Brookings report may help to dispel the notion that smaller tech hubs like Austin, Texas, or Miami will be home to the next generation of big tech companies. If anything, it suggests the Bay Area’s hold on the tech industry could grow stronger.

Rather than explicitly programming morality into its AI, xAI will seek to create a "maximally curious" AI, he said. Musk in March registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing. The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as a secretary. Median rent prices in these cities dropped by 0.5% in the last year, according to an analysis by Realtor.com. For renters, the decrease is a much-needed break after rent prices soared by nearly 25% from 2020 through most of 2021. This, alongside a growing number of newly constructed apartments, has likely driven down rent prices, the study says. At the same time, rent costs have steadily risen in many major Midwest and Northeast cities. In Columbus, Ohio, rent prices grew by 9.3% — the highest increase of all cities.
