Nandalal Weerasinghe, governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, told CNBC Friday that there will be more rate cuts to come, even after the central bank lowered its policy rate for a second consecutive month from 12% to 11% on Thursday. Asked if additional rate cuts will be needed, the governor answered: "Of course." He pointed to falling inflation rates in the Sri Lankan economy. July 3 (Reuters) - Russia's FSB security service said on Monday it had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to assassinate Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-backed head of Crimea, arresting an agent before he could blow up Aksyonov's car. Russian media have reported that security has been stepped up in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and that additional checks are being made on crossings from Russia's southern Krasnodar region into Crimea. Footage broadcast on state TV showed masked FSB operatives detaining a man in a tracksuit as he walked into a wooded area. The FSB did not name the man, who it said was in his mid-30s and had entered Crimea in June. Aksyonov thanked the FSB and said he was sure the individuals who ordered the assassination would be found and punished.

Retail crime has hit a bustling Kansas metropolis

Republican Kris Kobach, Kansas’ attorney general, said retail crime is a “spiraling problem” in his state, adding that Kansas and Missouri are among the top 10 states in the nation for volume of retail crime. “There is a link between drug trafficking and organized retail crime,” Kobach told lawmakers in June. “Organized retail crime is a problem that is getting worse, not better. Organized retail crime offers criminals a business model of pure profit, “with no overhead, rent, product cost. In early June, Kobach testified before a House Judiciary Committee hearing on “Organized Retail Crime and the Threat to Public Safety.”“When one thinks about the explosion of organized retail crime in the United States, the State of Kansas may not intuitively jump to mind,” he told lawmakers.

SARAJEVO, July 1 (Reuters) - Bosnia's international peace overseer, Christian Schmidt, on Saturday annulled two laws that Bosnian Serb parliament had adopted defying the constitution and the terms of a peace deal that ended the Balkan country's war in the 1990s. Schmidt, who as international High Representative in Bosnia has powers to impose laws and sack obstructive officials, also amended a law so that those seen as attacking the state institutions can be criminally prosecuted. "Recent decisions by the National Assembly of Republika Srpska directly violate the constitutional order of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Dayton peace agreement," Schmidt told a news conference in Sarajevo. The Serbs say they do not recognise Schmidt, who was appointed in 2021, as the high representative because the U.N. Security Council did not endorse his appointment. The U.S. embassy welcomed Schmidt's decisions, agreeing that he was defending the Dayton peace deal and the constitution upholding the rule of law in Bosnia.

commentary is missing: These systems are going to upend our relationships long before they remake our economies. That’s going to be a hurdle for anyone who wants to replace a lawyer or a researcher with an A.I. Conducting oversight for a system that’s more eloquent and knowledgeable than you are is going to be tough. America is, by any historical standard, unimaginably rich and powerful, and yet we’ve lost what matters most: community and connection. That’s the America these A.I.

A US Navy nuclear-powered submarine ran into an underwater mountain in 2021. The Bloomberg report cited a Navy statement saying that submarine repair delays are caused by "planning, material availability, and shipyard execution." An HH-60H Sea Hawk helicopter from the Chargers of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 14 flies over the Seawolf-class attack submarine USS Connecticut. An April 2022 declassified Navy report found that the accident was the result of a number of failings, and was entirely preventable. The vessel actually struck a pier in San Diego a few months prior to the South China Sea accident.

Photo: PHOTO: sedat suna/ShutterstockISTANBUL—Two years after he acquired Manchester City, then a sad-sack English soccer club in the shadow of a crosstown rival, a young royal from Abu Dhabi went to watch his team play in person for the first time. One source for such items is Outlandish, the Crown Heights, Brooklyn, outfitter that opened in January. It was co-founded by Benje Williams and Ken Bernard, who are Black, expressly to encourage people of color to reconnect with the outdoors. The shop sells the necessary gear but also organizes hikes outside of the city and hosts a book club focused on works about nature by writers of color. He and his father, who hadn’t gone backpacking in 40 years, have been on three more trips since. For the adventurous dad, Williams recommends an ultralightweight stuff sack from Allmansright, whose backpacks and bags are handmade in the Bronx, or socks from the Brooklyn-based label William Ellery, which offers wool-blend pairs in nature-inspired colors with names like Chanterelle and Lichen.

Wagner Group chief Prigozhin criticized Putin after not receiving a reward for capturing Bakhmut. Prigozhin has feuded with both Putin and the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding Bakhmut, ISW said. Russian state media has effectively banned reporting on Wagner, Prigozhin said. While it's not clear what reward Prigozhin would have received, the complications around his capture of Bakhmut may indicate a reluctance from Putin and Russian military leaders to reward him, according to the ISW. Prigozhin said Wagner troops took control of Bakhmut on May 10, and cleared the city on May 21, later blaming the delay on the lack of ammunition provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense, ISW stated.
To my surprise, one simple solution has taken out some of the sting, saving us hundreds of dollars: The Prime Visa credit card (previously known as the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature). (Note: To be eligible you need an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $139 per year.) I knew the Prime Visa existed—I’ve been writing about personal finance for 11 years—still, when my husband suggested we apply, I was skeptical. With my daughter about to turn one, I hope our Amazon spending will slow down a bit (though some experienced parents may smirk at my optimism). Either way, I’ll continue to put any Amazon purchases on this card and would recommend it to any new parents.

You’re probably very weird, and not just for all the obvious reasons you’re thinking of. Because, obviously, there’s going to be some overlap in the curve here. How you’re going to behave with your professor is quite different than how you’re going to behave with your friends. But it’s really kind of faceless, and you’re not really helping anybody you know. I think things are dynamic, and directions are changing, and that sort of thing.
It is a lot of pressure because for any public-facing woman or any woman in general who goes through something, there are a lot of expectations around how you’re supposed to handle things. It is a lot of pressure when someone puts you on a pedestal; eventually you’re going to fall off. But it is really incredible to have that support and I feel as though it did come at a cost, a very unexpected cost. How did it feel to pick up filming again after news of the affair broke? Honestly, when he started yelling at me, I felt a little bit satisfied that he was finally going to be the real him.
A new species called the demon catshark has been discovered off the coast of Australia. The first found of its kind, the shark has ghostly white eyes and is likely an opportunistic hunter. Not much is yet known about this species of catshark, White said. "In deep water it'd almost just be like this ghost-like demon thing that would just be swimming really quietly through the water," White told Insider. The identification of the demon catshark is a landmark discovery for marine taxonomists.
REUTERS/Niharika Kulkarni/File PhotoBENGALURU/SINGAPORE, May 6 (Reuters) - Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL) is considering investing $100 million in Indian jeweller BlueStone for a stake of about 20%, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The potential deal could boost BlueStone's plans to expand aggressively in India, the second-largest jewellery consuming nation behind China, as demand surges after the pandemic. BlueStone operates in a market that is dominated by thousands of small and large local independent jewellery stores, but also branded outlets like Titan Company-owned (TITN.NS) Tanishq and CaratLane, and Kalyan Jewellers (KALN.NS). While Temasek's interest in investing in Bluestone has been previously reported, Reuters is first to report details of an investment amount, the potential valuation and other financial details of the potential deal. BlueStone CEO Gaurav Kushwaha did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment, while Temasek declined to comment.

Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” is a supersized, fitfully amusing, self-important tale of fear and loathing. As the title announces, its protagonist, Beau Wassermann — a terminal sad-sack played by the invariably watchable Joaquin Phoenix — is anxious, well, about everything. Outwardly, “Beau Is Afraid” seems to be a departure for Aster, whose first two features center on horrific happenings and some seriously bad relationships. In “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” Aster meticulously peels back the ostensibly ordinary surface of the world, its patina of normalcy, to reveal the annihilating malevolence beneath it. In “Beau Is Afraid,” Aster changes things up by making Beau difficult to cozy up to.

April 2 (Reuters) - Chelsea have sacked manager Graham Potter, the London club said on Sunday after a string of poor results left the team 11th in the Premier League. "Graham has agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition," Chelsea said in a statement. "In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. "We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter final ahead. Potter is the 12th manager to be sacked in the Premier League this season and the announcement came hours after relegation-threatened Leicester City parted ways with Brendan Rodgers by mutual agreement.

Palace sack manager Vieira after winless run
  + stars: | 2023-03-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
March 17 (Reuters) - Crystal Palace sacked manager Patrick Vieira after 20 months in charge on Friday after their 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion left them three points above the Premier League relegation zone. Palace are the only side in the league without a win in 2023, having drawn five and lost six of their games. Their last league win came on Dec. 31, 2-0 at Bournemouth, and they are 12th on 27 points with 11 games to play. Vieira, 46, guided Palace to a 12th-placed finish and an FA Cup semi-final run in his first season in charge, earning praise for an attacking style of play. The club did not confirm who would replace Vieira or take charge of Sunday's Premier League trip to leaders Arsenal.
THE EXPRESSION “hitting the sack” gets slightly more literal in the great outdoors. If you’re a couple, though, you’re likely hitting separate sleeping sacks—unless you buy a double sleeping bag, wide enough to fit two people inside its nylon sheets. If you’ve ever tried to wriggle, worm-like, to snuggle up with your significant other while in the backcountry, only to be blocked by thick layers of insulated material, you might understand the appeal. Double sleeping bags should in theory work well for outdoorsy couples who want to make sleeping in the woods feel more like sleeping at home. That said, such intimate designs aren’t ideal for duos who disagree on ideal sleep temperature and position.
