A sleeper hit at the box office, the film is a "healthy sign" for the romantic comedy genre and other mid-budget Hollywood flicks, said Scott Meslow, author of "From Hollywood With Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy." In the seven weeks since, the romantic comedy has tallied $170 million globally, including $80 million from domestic theaters, according to data from Comscore. Between 2004 and 2010, Hollywood consistently released between 15 and 25 romantic comedy or romance films each year. Meslow said there was no rom-com "kill shot," a film or series of films that sparked the decline in theatrical releases of the genre. While some films will still be released only on streaming platforms, Hollywood has rediscovered the importance of theatrical as part of overall downstream revenue.

Hungarian president Novak resigns over sex abuse case pardon

Hungarian President Katalin Novak resigned on Saturday after coming under mounting pressure for pardoning a man convicted of helping to cover up sexual abuse in a children's home. Novak, a close ally of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban, resigned a week after her presidential pardon was first reported by local news site 444.hu. The revelation caused a public uproar and demands from the opposition for her and former Justice Minister Judit Varga to quit. Varga, who has been a rising star in Orban's ruling Fidesz party, resigned as a lawmaker on Saturday. This has been one of several issues over which Orban has clashed with the European Commission.

His seat in Wisconsin's 8th congressional district is particularly valuable, given the state's battleground status and House Republicans' current rail-thin majority. Despite occasional resistance to his party, Gallagher is still an essential GOP vote representing a key swing state. Trump won Wisconsin in 2016 but lost it to President Joe Biden in 2020. In 2022, Gallagher won roughly 72% of the vote against several third-party candidates but no formal Democrat opponent. He was also appointed to the helm of the House's high-profile China committee, which was created at the start of last year.

On a phone call in October, Carly Mark raised the idea for the first time: She needed to leave New York. But there was more: Ms. Mark said she could no longer sell clothes. A few weeks earlier, in September, Ms. Mark held a runway show for her five-year-old fashion brand, Puppets and Puppets. Puppets and Puppets may not be widely known, but Ms. Mark can draw an audience: celebrities with grit, writers with money, artists with modeling gigs. The installations tangoed with the clothes: elegant and screwy, sexy and goth, coated in cinematic references.

The singing contest’s glitzy lights and glittering dresses were supposed to be a respite after another depressing, hostage-filled news day on Israeli TV. Yet a somber mood hung over the finale of “Rising Star,” the show that selects Israel’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, as it pitted four young pop singers against one another on Tuesday night. This year’s winner, Eden Golan, 20, dedicated her performance of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith to the more than 100 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. “We won’t truly be OK until everyone returns home,” she said.

Dear listeners,I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but this year’s Grammys were … really good? Tracy Chapman, radiating joy and in fine voice, sang “Fast Car” publicly for the first time in ages, alongside a visibly reverent Luke Combs. For today’s playlist, we’re going to hear from some more of those slightly-less-than-household-name artists who took home Grammys this year. I chose two selections of my own, and I also asked my fellow Times pop critics Jon Pareles and Jon Caramanica to send me a few of their picks — a mix of jazz, folk, pop, gospel and more. Listen below to tracks from Laufey, Peso Pluma and Samara Joy, and check out the Bonus Tracks for more of our Grammy coverage.

Four Republicans joined all House Democrats in voting down what would have been the first impeachment of a Cabinet official in nearly 150 years. Mayorkas' impeachment was not expected to go anywhere. But senators from both parties have repeatedly made clear that they have a particular ire reserved for Mayorkas' impeachment. Before Tuesday's vote, McClintock issued a scathing 10-page letter to his colleagues denouncing their impeachment push. "[T]aking the course outlined by the [Homeland Security Committee] is bad politics and bad policy," McClintock wrote in his letter.

Nvidia's blowout performance last year has helped cement the firm as a rising star in corporate venturing, with the chipmaker's startup investments having nearly tripled in 2023, S&P Global reported on Tuesday. Pullbacks also extend to other firms that are historically leaders in corporate venturing, such as SoftBank Group and Tencent Holdings. The total value of rounds surpasses $5 billion, S&P Global cited. The firm's 2022 termination of a deal to acquire Arm Holdings suggests that bigger M&A deals are off the table, S&P Global said. For 2024, the chipmaker doesn't seem to be slowing down; its already announced three startup investments, S&P Global said.

Export manufacturing and other mainstream business activities in Myanmar have suffered since the military takeover, wiping out jobs that millions relied on to get by. The economy is forecast to grow at a meager 1% pace this year and about half the population is estimated to be living in poverty. Fighting with pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic minority armed groups has escalated in recent months, raising pressure on the military, which has suffered some key defeats. However, United Nations officials estimate that nearly 18 million of the country's nearly 57 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. The Myanmar military administration reported $602 million in foreign direct investment last year, mostly in the energy sector, with only $112 million invested in manufacturing.

Ron DeSantis was touted as a rising star with a clear path leading to the Republican nomination in 2024 and possibly into the White House itself. DeSantis also championed the policies that Trump voters claimed to want more of, like a hard line on abortion, expanded gun access and removing progressive prosecutors. The thing that DeSantis didn’t have over the billionaire reality TV star-turned-president – Trump’s personality – turned out to be a fatal flaw. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott – were unwilling to lend their support to DeSantis’ flailing campaign, endorsing Trump instead. Or one could look at DeSantis’ charmless offensive and conclude that his presidential ambitions will never be more than that – ambitions.

CNN —It’s Oscars season and “Barbie” is dominating the discourse. But here’s the thing; “Barbie” is neither smart enough nor interesting enough to be inspiring this level of uproar. It’s also important to remember that “Barbie” has most certainly not been ignored by the Academy Awards’ members. It has eight nominations – which is far more than many of 2023’s other women-directed films got. Josh Shapiro has a new slogan for how he wants to run Pennsylvania — and it's not fit for kids' ears. “There’s children here, so we’ll just say ‘stuff.’”That was the G-rated version of the line he’s been delivering in recent months. His social media team also has used the phrase online in videos. One of Shapiro's fellow Pennsylvania Democrats, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, cussed routinely on social media while on his way to winning the Senate seat in 2022. Still, Fetterman — known for his blunt and irreverent talk — generally confined his profanities to his writings on social media when describing his disdain for, say, Pennsylvania's relatively low minimum wage.

Donald J. Trump plumbed new depths of degradation in his savage takedown of Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a yearlong campaign of emasculation and humiliation that helped force one of the party’s rising stars out of the presidential race after just one contest and left him to pick up the pieces of his political future. In front of enormous rally audiences, Mr. Trump painted Mr. DeSantis as a submissive sniveler, insisting that he had cried and begged “on his knees” for an endorsement in the 2018 Florida governor’s race. In a series of sexually charged attacks, Mr. Trump suggested — without a shred of proof — that Mr. DeSantis wore high heels, that he might be gay and that perhaps he was a pedophile. He promised that intense national scrutiny would leave Mr. DeSantis whining for “mommy.”Mr. DeSantis shied from fighting back, which only inflicted more pain on his campaign.

CNN —Cricket South Africa (CSA) has denied accusations of antisemitism made by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) after David Teeger was removed as captain of the SA Under-19 team. Teeger, who is Jewish, was stood down as captain because of fears over “protests related to the war in Gaza” during the Under-19 men’s Cricket World Cup, which gets underway in South Africa on Friday. The 19-year-old Teeger has made comments in the past in support of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The SAJBD met with CSA earlier this week and later released a statement saying that the only explanation for Teeger losing the captaincy was “plain antisemitism” – a claim that CSA denies. The timing of CSA’s decision to remove Teeger’s captaincy occurs as the South African government accused Israel of genocide in an unprecedented case at the United Nations’ top court.
