Increased availability of advanced chips has made parallel computing more accessible. By and large, they were nerding out on the possibilities of parallel computing. That speed comes from the parallel computing that the GPU enables. AdvertisementThe concept has been around since the 1980s, but until relatively recently, the capability to actually perform parallel computing was hard to access. This immense volume of computations is what has driven so much demand for Nvidia GPUs.

Japan's third-quarter real gross domestic product expanded 0.3% year on year, snapping two straight quarters of year-on-year decline, according to government data released Friday. The GDP reading marked a reversal from the revised 1.1% decline seen in the second quarter. The data comes against the backdrop of the Bank of Japan raising rates from 0.1% to 0.25% in July — its highest level since 2008. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose 0.2%, in line with Reuters poll estimates, but lower than the 0.5% growth in the second quarter. On an annualized basis, the economy expanded 0.9%, beating estimates of a 0.7% expansion.

Nvidia's next-generation artificial intelligence chip Blackwell is in hot demand from companies like OpenAI, Microsoft , Meta and other firms building AI data centers to power products like ChatGPT and Copilot. Doosan's CCLs are manufactured by Doosan Electronics, a subsidiary that accounts for over 70% of the corporation's revenue. The bank's analysts believe this estimate could be conservative, noting the increased CCL content per Blackwell chip, which could translate into a much higher total addressable market than previously estimated. Doosan's stock has already shown strong performance, rising nearly 150% this year and almost tripling in value over the past year. The company is currently valued at about $2.5 billion on the Korean stock exchange.

Inside Microsoft's struggles with Copilot
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Ashley Stewart | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +23 min
In September 2023, Microsoft's famously soft-spoken CEO, Satya Nadella, unveiled the company's flagship AI product, Copilot, with sweeping fanfare. Some of Microsoft's own employees and executives are privately concerned that Copilot won't be able to deliver on its ambitions. Copilot's struggles have created an opening for Microsoft's rivals, some of whom have seized on the opportunity to promote their own agendas. "Now, when Joe Blow logs into an account and kicks off Copilot, they can see everything," said one Microsoft employee familiar with customer complaints. As complaints and questions over Copilot mount, so does the pressure to justify Microsoft's unprecedented level of spending on AI.

The rise in India's income and wealth inequality is not a result of the poor getting poorer, Sumedha Dasgupta, senior analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) flags. India's income gap (which is the difference in wages earned between different demographic) comes alongside a worsening wealth divide too. Instead, the phenomenon comes as the "rich are getting much richer at a faster rate," she told CNBC's Inside India. India's 3 household groupsA more pressing issue brought on by India's wealth and income divide is the emergence of different categories of households with distinct standards of living. Unequal education opportunitiesThe EIU's Dasgupta attributes India's vicious wealth and income gap cycle in large part to mismatched education opportunities.

Money from programs like Social Security accounted for 18% of total personal income in 2022. A growing share of income in most US counties is coming from social safety net programs like SNAP, Social Security, and Medicaid, per a report published in September by the research firm Economic Innovation Group. One in six people in 2022 were over the age of 65 — compared to one in 10 in 1970 — and just over half of the national transfer income flows from Medicare and Social Security. The report's findings come as Business Insider has spoken with many retirees — who are living solely on Social Security income because they don't have savings or retirement investments — who say they are struggling to afford basic necessities. "I don't want to be rich, I just need to be comfortable," a baby boomer living on $1,104 monthly in Social Security previously told BI.

Oil dips on oversupply concerns, heads for weekly loss
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged down early on Friday as oversupply concerns and demand worries stemming from a stronger dollar outweighed a steep draw in U.S. fuel stocks. Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, also fell unexpectedly by 1.4 million barrels, the data showed. Signs of stronger demand supported oil prices, ANZ analyst Daniel Hynes said. The Paris-based agency raised its 2024 demand growth forecast by 60,000 barrels per day to 920,000 bpd, and left its 2025 oil demand growth forecast little changed at 990,000 bpd. Also pressuring oil prices, the dollar surged on Thursday to a one-year high and headed for a fifth-straight daily gain fueled by higher yields and Donald Trump's presidential election victory in the United States.

CNN —From the moment the US election results rolled in, climate leaders knew Donald Trump would be a blow to the COP29 talks in Baku. Amid the chaos, prominent global climate leaders on Friday issued an open letter calling for a “fundamental overhaul” of the entire UN climate process. One of the surest bets when the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates was for bond prices to rise while yields came under pressure, but that hasn't played out according to plan. This market, which has defied so many historical patterns, has kept the pressure on bond yields up due to a variety of factors, including more persistent concerns about the federal deficit. But her bigger concern remains on the bond side of the markets. She said investors will be "more wary" given the election rally and the pulling forward of expectations about tax cuts and regulation and expectations they will contribute to growth. But it is in the bond market where investors should expect even more volatility.

Jim Cramer names hot sectors that could use a pullback

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday suggested the post-election market has been extreme, with big wins and big losses. "We have a lot of overly loved stocks in this market right now," he said. Cramer pointed out the sharp rise of enterprise software stocks, saying that it seems these companies with in-demand products for big corporations can do no wrong. Cramer also highlighted two sectors he said are "too hated," but could bounce back, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. For semiconductors, Cramer concluded that those companies have suffered in part because some feel that new artificial intelligence-powered PCs haven't taken off.
