The cars have driven into firefighting scenes, caused construction delays, impeded ambulances and even meandered into active crime scenes. "There have been 75 plus incidents," said San Francisco fire chief Jeanine Nicholson. San Francisco city attorney David Chiu said, "there are still some glitches that need to be worked out." "The idea that thousands of vehicles could be hitting our streets in short order is what gives us concern."

Hertz's embrace of Teslas isn't going so well
  + stars: | 2023-10-28 | by ( Tim Levin | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Hertz had initially aimed to make 25% of its fleet electric by the end of 2024. Today, 11% of Hertz's cars are electric, and 80% of those are Teslas. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn 2021, Hertz started going all-in on EVs, announcing a plan to buy 100,000 Teslas as part of an effort to give customers electric options. Add it all up, and Hertz's third-quarter profits would have been "several margin points higher" if its fleet was similarly sized but didn't include EVs, Scherr said. This year, electric cars have been languishing on dealer lots, forcing automakers to cut prices and lather on other incentives.

Elon Musk’s worst nightmare

It's hard to tell, for a simple reason: The data on the safety of robot cars sucks. Until robot cars have traveled for hundreds of millions of miles, there's no way to get a statistically significant, unequivocal conclusion. If the data on robot cars is equivocal or incomplete, then those rules should keep them off the road. In a sense, she's Elon Musk's worst nightmare. To her, the safety of self-driving cars is not an abstract question.

How Many Credit Cards Should I Have?
  + stars: | 2023-10-10 | by ( Gerri Detweiler | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +17 min
Use this guide to identify what kind of credit card user you are—and how many credit cards you should have. A secured credit card can be a smart option if you don’t have a very good credit score. Most small business credit cards require a good personal credit score and sufficient income from all sources, not just the business. However, many business credit cards don’t appear on consumer credit reports, which means they don’t impact your credit scores as long as you pay on time. Similar to choosing a personal credit card, pick your business credit cards based on your spending habits.

Oct 10 (Reuters) - Kerrisdale Capital said on Tuesday it had taken a short position on Joby Aviation (JOBY.N) over profitability concerns, sending the electric aircraft maker's shares down nearly 5%. California-based Joby said Kerrisdale has a "vested interest" in lowering its share price. Joby plans to operate like a rideshare app, unlike other electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) peers that intend to sell their aircraft to customers including airlines and logistics firms. Kerrisdale warned of higher operating costs as the company's electric aircraft are likely to offer lower range and power than traditional helicopters. The U.S. aviation regulator in June gave Joby, which is backed by investors such as Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), Toyota Motor (7203.T) and Intel Corp (INTC.O), the nod to flight-test its electric air taxi.

SYDNEY, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Australia's Labor government will introduce legislation to close "loopholes" in workplace law, a move opposed by employer groups fearing higher costs, when parliament returns on Monday. Workplace Minister Tony Burke said on Sunday he would introduce the bill making it a criminal offence to deliberately underpay workers, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of A$7.8 million ($5.0 million). Penalties would not apply to employers who make honest mistakes, Burke said in a statement. Burke said in a speech last week that in addition to criminalising "wage theft", the bill would make it easier for casual workers to gain permanent roles, scrutinise the use of labour hire firms to undercut minimum pay rates, and introduce minimum standards for "gig economy" workers, including in food delivery and rideshare apps. Uber has banned under-25s from working as drivers in California because of rising insurance costs. In a statement to the AP, Uber said its commercial auto insurance costs had risen by more than half in the last two years. It also said personal injury lawyers were driving costs up by suing the company. Uber confirmed to the AP that it will allow under-25s who are currently signed up to transport passengers to continue driving for the company. In March, a California appeals court allowed the company and its rivals to continue doing so, overturning a previous decision by a lower court.

"For most of our history, profitable wasn't the first thing that came up when you asked someone about Uber," Khosrowshahi said on Uber's second-quarter conference call Aug. 1. The $1 a ride alone can add up to $4,000 to a driver's annual revenue, the company says. All of them will compete for customers on Uber's platform much as hotels search for business on Expedia.com – a business once run by Khosrowshahi. Indeed, one threat to Uber's current status as a market darling is if AV makers, especially Tesla, decide to compete with Uber directly for riders, Zino said. Khosrowshahi told Sellers that 10-20% of Uber drivers may soon be robots, but said he still thinks more people will be driving for Uber than there are today.

Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal that the worst part of Uber driving was food delivery. The CEO's thoughts come after he moonlit as an Uber driver to understand why hiring dipped. When asked the most nightmarish rider experience he had as an Uber driver, Khosrowshahi said that it wasn't the riders that gave him issues — it was delivering food. "I was trying to deliver food and I couldn't find where to drop it off," Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal. Uber drivers have also complained about riders being loud and obnoxious, slamming doors, leaving crumbs on the seats, and running late.
