The pandemic might be over, but working remotely is a trend that's set to stay as millennials and Gen Z's continue to work while visiting their favorite destinations. That's according to WorkMotion, a Berlin-based human resource platform, which analyzed 85 cities around the globe to see how easy and attractive they were for remote workers. The report refers to "workcation" as a short term residence — of about 12 months or fewer — in a country while working remotely for a existing employer. "Not many cities can offer them all, but it's undeniable that cities legislating to attract remote workers become far more attractive than those that don't," he said, elaborating that only a handful of cities in the study offered remote workers a digital nomad visa that would allow them to continue employment in the country they relocated to. Only 17 out of the 85 cities offer a digital nomad visa for remote workers.

Having employers examine social media wasn't a winning idea for most people. Only about four in 10 workers were comfortable with letting employers mine social media posts — signed or anonymous — for insights. That could come from sites like Glassdoor or apps like Blind or even social media posts that don't identify individuals. Not surprisingly, younger workers were somewhat more comfortable than their older colleagues with companies monitoring social media posts. Among Gen Z and millennial workers, 45% were OK with employers reviewing non-anonymous social media posts.

"Many people spend between six and eight hours a day on Zoom calls, which means in general, unless you have a walking desk, you're sitting for an extended period of time," says Kira Stokes, a celebrity trainer and founder of Kira Stokes Fitness. Amazon is now giving managers leeway to effectively fire employees who fail to meet the company's three-times-a-week, return-to-office mandate. That's according to updated global manager guidance on Amazon's return-to-office policy obtained by Insider. The guidelines tell managers to first hold a private conversation with employees who don't comply with the three-times-a-week requirement. Giving managers the ability to fire employees for non-compliance is the strongest measure Amazon has taken over its return-to-office policy. In February, Amazon said that corporate employees would have to come into the office at least three times a week starting in May.

Remote workers are out-earning their in-office peers in several industries including tech and finance, according to new research from Payscale. The findings corroborate other research that shows that people who work from home earn more. Remote workers are twice as likely to earn above the median pay for non-remote workers in the same industry and zip code, a study from payroll provider Gusto found last fall. For their report, Payscale surveyed over 300,000 working U.S. adults between August 2021 and August 2023, defining "remote" as anyone who telecommutes most or all of the time. Retail and customer service has the widest pay gap between remote and non-remote workers of all industries, Payscale reports, followed by finance and insurance, with tech and manufacturing a close third and fourth.

Remote work has plummeted from its pandemic high. Remote work's gradual decline reflects the ongoing push from companies to get employees back in the office: 43% of companies have set tighter limits around remote work or mandated some form of return-to-office over the past year, ZipRecruiter reports. The temporary work stoppage will end at 6 am Pacific Time on Saturday morning, concluding a massive labor effort involving more than 75,000 health care workers and spanning four states.
