Owning overcrowded stocks could increase volatility and lead to muted portfolio gains, according to Morgan Stanley. "Crowded trades come with the risk of overvaluation and increased volatility as it may be more difficult to attract the marginal investor, while avoiding overcrowded stocks can provide investors with an opportunity to capture unrecognized value when paired with strong fundamentals," Morgan Stanley strategists said in a note to clients. Car rental agency Avis Budget Group was the most crowded stock among hedge funds, with more than half its float owned by professional traders. Aerospace and defense company Loar Holdings and real estate development and management firm Howard Hughes were also on the list of crowded trades. Janus Henderson , The New York Times , Planet Fitness and Wayfair were popular names among hedge funds last quarter.

CNN —Russia’s use of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile on Thursday is the latest escalation in the Ukraine war. The use of what Vladimir Putin said was a ballistic missile with multiple warheads in offensive combat is a clear departure from decades of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence. Russia has supplied North Korea with antiaircraft missiles in return for the deployment of its troops to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine, South Korea’s national security adviser said on Friday. In recent weeks, North Korea has sent an estimated 11,000 troops, some of whom have joined Russian forces in their fight to retake territories occupied by Ukraine in Russia’s Kursk region, according to South Korean and United States officials. It has also sent close to 20,000 shipping containers of weapons to Russia since the summer of 2023, including artillery guns and shells, short-range ballistic missiles and multiple-rocket launchers, South Korean officials have said. In return, North Korea has been widely expected to seek Russian help in modernizing its conventional armed forces and advancing its nuclear weapons program and missiles. One of the biggest weaknesses of the North Korean military has been its poor, outdated air defense system, while the United States and its allies in South Korea and Japan run fleets of high-tech war planes, including F-35 stealth fighter jets. “We understand that Russia has provided related equipment and anti-air missiles to shore up the poor air defense for Pyongyang,” the North Korean capital, South Korea’s national security adviser, Shin Won-shik, said in an interview with SBS-TV on Friday.

Israel pressed on with its bombardment of Lebanon on Friday after issuing widespread evacuation warnings in the country’s south, as the conflict with Hezbollah militants showed no sign of abating despite a U.S.-led push for a cease-fire. Some of the Israeli strikes, which came as Lebanon celebrated its independence day, hit near the southern port city of Tyre, following calls by the Israeli military for civilians to evacuate entire towns in the area and flee more than 20 miles north. Bombings also targeted the Dahiya, the area near Beirut that is in effect controlled by Hezbollah and has been hit hard in recent days. Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on Friday killed two paramedics south of Tyre. More than 145 medical workers in Lebanon have been killed in the line of duty since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began last October, according to the U.N. World Health Organization.

Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

If Steel wins, that number would be 151, the same number of women serving in Congress on Election Day, and the first stall in progress since 2016, when President-elect Donald Trump won his first term. Both scenarios mean the number of women in the next Congress will also fall short of the current record of 152 women, following Texas Democratic Rep. Erica Lee Carter’s special election win this month. Senate Republican women will also meet their current record, with nine in the chamber. The number of House Republican women will decrease because of some losses and retirements, falling from 34 in the current Congress to 31 or 32, depending on Steel and Miller-Meeks’ races.
