The cryptocurrency market plummeted in value on Sunday, as investors continued selling out of risky assets. Led by a drop of 11% in bitcoin in the past 24 hours and a 21% plunge in ether, the overall value of cryptocurrencies sank by about $270 billion, according to CoinGecko data. The selloff in the crypto market coincided with a broader slide in equities in Asia-Pacific markets. The latest crypto wipeout will be felt by a broader base of investors after the SEC this year approved new spot exchange-traded funds for bitcoin and ether. More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.

The Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Covert, Mich. John Madill | The Herald-Palladium | APThe Palisades Power Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan had become a piece of history, a relic of an era when nuclear energy was viewed as the future. The new technology, which could become the first of its kind on the U.S. grid, promises to speed deployment of nuclear plants in the future. The U.S. and a coalition of more than 20 other countries pledged in December to triple nuclear energy by 2050. But building new nuclear plants is slow and expensive. SMRs are viewed as an important path to expand nuclear power because they promise to reduce capital costs, a major hurdle to building new plants.

CNN —When women first competed in Olympic track and field events in 1928, they wore loose t-shirts and wide shorts, sometimes cinched with a belt. Nike's design for the US women's team outfit, right, is seen in an image posted to X by @CitiusMag. The controversy follows a headline-making protest at the 2020 Tokyo Games, when the German women’s gymnastics team rejected bikini-cut unitards in favor of fuller coverage, in a statement against “sexualization in gymnastics,” the German Gymnastics Federation said at the time. Function and styleOn the Olympic track, there aren’t many regulations when it comes to what athletes can wear. The Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina is out with a new TV ad where he and his wife reveal that she had an abortion 30 years ago. Mark Robinson and his wife talk directly to the camera, revealing few details about the procedure beyond his telling viewers, "Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. Robinson’s promise in his TV ad to keep the state’s abortion ban at 12 weeks appears to mark a shift from his previous remarks. "As governor, Mark Robinson will work to make North Carolina a destination for life by building a culture that does more to support women and families, including bolstering adoption, as well as foster and childcare." Opinion | Is It Weird to Care About the Birthrate?
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Even when the cats are left out of it, alas, the problem of weirdness is a chronic one for pro-natalists. This is not to concede that it is actually weird to care about the birthrate: Children are good, human beings are good, a prosperous future for the human race is good, and it’s absurd not to care about looming depopulation and all the social and economic problems that come trailing in its wake. Future generations (to the extent that they exist!) will find it much, much stranger that so many people barely noticed this issue or dismissed it than that a Republican vice-presidential candidate once floated giving children political representation through their parents. But if you are a pro-natalist, you still have to understand the reasons an aura of weirdness hangs over the idea.

Last year, after selling a chunk of his stock and bond portfolio to purchase a house in cash, Sam Dogen found himself with too little passive income to support his family's budget. It turned out, this particular gig didn't align with his personal or financial priorities at this point in his life. By last year, his passive income portfolio, which includes stocks, bonds and real estate investments, among others, was bringing in about $380,000 a year. "That shored up a huge hole in my passive income," Dogen says. That won't produce passive income unless Dogen reinvests it, but it gave him the cash cushion to paper over some short-term cracks in his finances.

CNN —Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin abruptly revoked a plea deal for the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and his co-conspirators, and he relieved the overseer in charge after years of effort to reach an agreement to bring the cases to a close. Prosecutors in the case had been discussing the possibility of a plea deal for more than two years, which would have avoided a lengthy trial complicated by questions over the admissibility of evidence obtained during torture. The US had said it would seek the death penalty for Mohammed. US criminal courts for decades have dealt with high profile terror trials, including with death sentences, which Holder had authorized. “They were dealt a bad hand by political hacks and ideologues who lost faith in our justice system.

Cash has poured into money market funds since the Federal Reserve began its rate hiking cycle. Short-term debt has been a popular investment over the past few years, and money market funds are a top example. For perspective, there was roughly $4 trillion in total money market funds as of the fourth quarter of 2019, according to the St. Louis Fed . Money market funds hold very short-term debt, and many currently offer a yield above 5%. "Historically, you don't tend to see money market inflows stop or convert to outflows until you get below say 3% on those rates.

On Wednesday, the Education Department announced it was taking another step toward implementing its plan to cancel student debt using the Higher Education Act of 1965. A copy of the email reviewed by Business Insider told borrowers that "if you WANT to be included in potential student debt relief, you don't need to take any action." "Today, my Administration took another major step to cancel student debt for approximately 30 million Americans," Biden said in a statement. "Despite attempts led by Republican elected officials to block our efforts, we won't stop fighting to provide relief to student loan borrowers, fix the broken student loan system, and help borrowers get out from under the burden of student debt." President Joe Biden is making another move to forgive student debt for millions of borrowers. Borrowers will have until August 30 to contact their loan servicer to opt out of any relief they may otherwise receive. The administration says if the rules are finalized as drafted, eligible borrowers shouldn't have to take any action to see debt relief. Borrowers who choose to opt out, however, will not have the opportunity to opt back in. "By providing more information to borrowers on how they can take advantage of our upcoming debt relief programs, borrowers will be prepared to benefit swiftly once the rules are final," Biden said in a statement.

The Biden administration said on Wednesday that it had started disbursing $2 billion to thousands of farmers who have faced discrimination, after years of delays and legal battles thwarted the federal government’s efforts to compensate them. The payouts come nearly two years after the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 created a fund to help farmers of any ethnicity who experienced discrimination from the federal government when applying for loans or trying to repay their debts. The slow rollout of the program became a political problem for President Biden this year, with Black farmers accusing him of failing to live up to his promises to help them. “For too long, many farmers and ranchers experienced discrimination in farm loan programs and have not had the same access to federal resources and support,” Mr. Biden said in a statement on Wednesday. Today that promise has become a reality.”The Agriculture Department is making payments to 43,000 farmers across all 50 states, with Mississippi and Alabama having the most recipients.
