More than half of 2024 holiday shoppers, or 55%, felt stress at the costs associated with the season, according to a survey conducted online in September by The Harris Poll on behalf of NerdWallet. Still, 32% of consumers thought it was important to purchase holiday gifts and experiences to show their love for family and friends, despite the expenses, the survey found. "This builds a level of almost manic euphoria and gives us permission to ignore a spending plan, achieve instant gratification and worry about the aftershocks later." To that point, 10% of holiday shoppers this year were considering tapping their emergency savings for gifts, according to NerdWallet. To avoid overspending during the holidays, people need to plan ahead and create a spending budget, experts say.

Notre Dame had tried to convince itself it could catch the sport’s modern royalty that night. That Notre Dame hasn’t won a major bowl in 31 years — 44 other programs have since a win over Texas A&M in the 1994 Cotton Bowl — shouldn’t matter. (Ronald Martinez / Getty Images)If this Notre Dame team does something no Notre Dame team has done in a generation, it will start with the Irish believing they actually can. When Notre Dame lined up for a fake field goal against Indiana, it sent Curt Cignetti scrambling to call a timeout. It was all in service of building Notre Dame into a different kind of a contender, one that believes it can finally get over the line.

We initiated our position in Home Depot in early September , betting that falling mortgage rates could spark activity in the languishing housing sector. Despite two more Fed rate cuts for a total of 100 basis points, or 1 percentage point, of easing in 2024, the 10-year Treasury yield remained elevated. If mortgage rates drop below 6%, the company's comparable sales should return to positive territory in time, reversing the weakness in big-ticket projects. But there is a risk that longer-term bond yields — which mortgage rates track more closely — will continue to rise. A family’s set of dishes has passed through five generations of women, but will the teacups, plates and bowls make it to a sixth? The bowl, specifically used to serve berries, is part of a set of fine china that has been in her family for over a century. For over a century, this set of fine china has been handed down from woman to woman in the same family. Of all the pieces that were eventually broken in the china set, the teacup has the most delicate seal. A correction was made on Jan. 1, 2025: An earlier version of this article incorrectly named the first woman to own the china set as Gertrude.

The restaurant, which charges nearly $500 per person for dinner, only serves water from the Swedish company Nordaq, said Executive Chef Martin Öfner. Zen is one of more than 140 Michelin-starred restaurants that serve Nordaq water, company CEO Johanna Mattsson told CNBC Travel. The company aims to reduce single-use water bottles in the hospitality industry — both the cheap plastic variety commonly found in hotel rooms, to glass-bottled European mineral water served in higher-end restaurants. The Indian hospitality company ITC Hotels created its own brand of "zero-mile" water called SunyaAqua to reduce single-use plastic bottles in its 140 hotels. In the latter, Be WTR's founder and CEO Mike Hecker said water may travel slightly farther than ITC Hotel's "zero mile" water, but not by much.

The practice of making New Year’s resolutions may be done with optimistic intent. The ancient city of Babylon was located in what’s now Iraq, roughly 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Baghdad. “Like many ancient New Year’s festivals, (Akitu) lauded creation and fertility on both an agricultural and cosmic scale,” Moss said. “In 1893,” McKenzie said, “Yenowine’s Illustrated News out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, published a list of citizens’ ‘Resolutions,’ many of which seem to be lightly satirical: ‘Frank A Lappen: To steer clear of Milwaukee during the whole of 1894.’”New Year’s resolutions were a firm tradition by the 20th century, McKenzie said. At this point, the tradition had also moved beyond religious contexts, reflecting the beginnings of the broader secularization of society, Moss said.

CNN —It may surprise some people unfamiliar with the comic book industry, with its multibillion-dollar movie tie-ins, that it’s been on the verge of collapse multiple times over the decades. Still, some artists are embracing generative AI despite tensions over its use, hoping to ride the disruptive wave like comic book creators have done time and again to survive. A view of atmosphere during New York Comic Con 2024 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on October 17, 2024 in New York City. AI also could address small business pain points by developing pitches, handling repetitive tasks and aiding in research, attorney Gamal Hennessy who specializes in working with comic book creators, told CNN. Steve Ellis, an industry veteran and art teacher, said he remains concerned about the potential barriers to entry AI could create in the comic book industry.

He marveled at the efficiency of the African oil palm, which can produce five times as much edible oil per acre as corn or soy. As environmental activists raised the alarm about the palm oil industry's toll on the tropical forests of Southeast Asia two decades ago, Unilever, the world's largest buyer of palm oil, teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund and other parties to establish the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Six years later, as a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, they sold that operation to Felda Global Ventures, the third-largest palm oil company in the world, for almost $200 million. Not only was García's government offering sweetheart deals to foreign investors under its National Plan to Promote Oil Palm, but the country had more than 3 million acres suitable for oil palm. It was Washington Bolívar, the activist who had helped Ucayali's Indigenous communities fight the palm oil plantations.

CNN —A critical failure in Puerto Rico’s power grid has caused a massive blackout affecting a large part of the island, according to a post on Gov. The New Year’s Eve blackout has knocked out power for nearly 1.3 million users, or about 88% of customers, according to LUMA Energy, the Canadian-American power company responsible for power distribution and transmission on the island. The outage is just the latest time that Puerto Rico’s inconsistent power system has faltered on a mass scale. LUMA Energy took over management of the grid in 2021 from the government-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, known as PREPA. After Hurricane Ernesto in August, about half of all electric customers on the island were at one point without power, according to LUMA Energy.

Facing a public relations checkmate, the International Chess Federation surrendered and allowed world champ Magnus Carlsen to wear jeans Monday at the World Blitz Championship in New York City. So while FIDE still has an official dress code, Dvorkovich said it now allows for "elegant minor deviations" such as "appropriate jeans matching the jacket." "Oh, I am definitely playing in jeans tomorrow," Carlsen responded on X after the FIDE statement was released. FIDE found itself playing defense Friday after Carlsen, a five-time world chess champion and seven-time world blitz chess champion, defied the dress code by wearing jeans at the World Rapid Chess Championship, which was also held in New York City.
