The House Ethics Committee investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz has reached out to an ex-girlfriend who was a key witness in the federal investigation into the Florida lawmaker, according to a source familiar with the ethics probe. Gaetz said in a statement to CNN that the Ethics Committee investigation is “payback” for Gaetz’s efforts to oust Kevin McCarthy, the former speaker of the house, and that he sees “through this sham and the American people will too.” The Ethics Committee declined to comment. That federal probe concluded in 2023 with no charges brought against the congressman. She is not expected to voluntarily cooperate with the Ethics probe. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust the former speaker because of the ethics probe.

American artist and sculptor Carl Andre pictured at London's Whitechapel Gallery in London on March 15, 1978. Andre’s work often consisted of industrially fabricated forms made from simple, raw material — such as metal, granite, wood, and brick — arranged in free-standing patterns. His death passing was confirmed on Wednesday by the Paula Cooper Gallery, with which the artist had worked since 1964. “My father always said, ‘I am old school and European, and my wife does not work,’” Andre told the magazine. Carl Andre, one of the most influential and ascetic pioneers of Minimalist sculpture, whose career was overshadowed by the accusation that he played a role in the death of his wife, the Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta, died on Wednesday in Manhattan. His death, in a hospice facility, was confirmed by Steven Henry, a senior partner with the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, which represented Mr. Andre. Mr. Andre helped establish the terms of Minimalism, which shifted the focus of art in the 1960s away from the heroic gestures of Abstract Expressionism toward rudimentary forms and industrial materials. He was a practitioner of the movement at perhaps its most austere, working primarily from a limited range of elemental metals along with granite, wood and brick. Typically employed in the standard forms in which any contractor could order them from a foundry or quarry, the materials were arranged directly on the ground, with a plainness and Pythagorean purity that brought to mind cairns or sacred tessellation.

Last Thanksgiving, Cynthia Mosson had been on her feet all day in her kitchen in Frankfort, Ind., preparing dinner for nine. She was nearly finished — the ham in the oven, the dressing made — when she suddenly felt the need to sit down. “I started hurting in my left shoulder,” said Ms. Mosson, 61. They said testing revealed serious blockages in all her coronary arteries and told her, “You’re going to need open-heart surgery,” Ms. Mosson recalled. When such patients head into an operating room, what happens next has a lot to do with their sex, a recent study in JAMA Surgery reported.

Gray is drab and dreary. Gray lacks the warmth so many people desire. According to Amy Krane, architectural color consultant at Amy Krane Color , "People are leaning toward more colorful, complex color combinations now, which is one reason why the gray train has finally pulled out of the station." Interior designer and color expert Paula Kennedy of Timeless Kitchen Design LLC told BI the declining interest in gray may be due to an increased desire for warmer hues. Kennedy said gray's "many different undertones" can appear "drab and cold" and thinks the hue will continue to fall out of favor.

CNN —A Canadian man who posted conspiracy theories on social media claiming the government was deliberately starting wildfires has pleaded guilty to starting 14 blazes that forced hundreds of people from their homes. Prosecutor Marie-Philippe Charron said one of the fires Paré set forced the evacuation of around 400 people in the town of Chapais, Quebec. Pare does not remember all of the fires he could have started, so we have currently 14 fires, we have 14 counts,” Charron told CNN. They also found multiple social media posts by Paré accusing the Canadian government of purposefully igniting fires to persuade people to believe in climate change. Human activity does play a role in starting wildfires, either deliberately or through accidental actions such as discarding a lit cigarette, but natural factors are also involved.

Brazilian lender Itau launches crypto trading

SAO PAULO, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Brazilian bank Itau Unibanco (ITUB4.SA) on Monday launched a cryptocurrency trading service for clients of its investment platform, making the nation's largest lender the latest local player to enter the market for the digital asset's exchange. "It starts with bitcoin, but our overarching strategic plan is to expand to other crypto assets in the future," he said, adding any expansion would depend on how crypto regulation in the country evolved. Itau argues it will stand out from rivals as it also acts as a custodian, safeguarding users' assets, Antunes said. The move comes about a month after two local players announced they were leaving the crypto market. Brokerage and investments company XP (XP.O) did not say why it was shutting down its crypto service, but financial services firm PicPay, owned by conglomerate J&F which also controls meatpacker JBS (JBSS3.SA), cited regulatory uncertainties.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.
