In photos: Arabian oryx populations rebound

Editor’s Note: Call to Earth is a CNN editorial series committed to reporting on the environmental challenges facing our planet, together with the solutions. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. The slender horns of the Arabian oryx, also known as the “white oryx” because of its luminous white coat, are said to be an inspiration for tales of the mythical unicorn. This kickstarted conservation efforts, which involved breeding the species in captivity and reintroducing it into the wild. Today, there are an estimated 1,220 Arabian oryxes in the wild and 6,000 to 7,000 in captivity, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Scarlett Kiaras-AttariI wanted to pursue a master's in medieval history. Although there are so many great departments in the US for religious studies and medieval history, my mentors at school had all studied at Oxbridge — colleges across Oxford and Cambridge. So, in 2022, I followed their advice and pursued a master's in Medieval History at the University of Oxford. That's the difficulty of expat life — there's the US in the UK version of myself, and I'm always teetering between two places. Although I used to think that I'd stay in the UK, I've recently started to think about how my family members are getting old.

Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. North Carolina became the most recent state to offer online sports betting earlier this year. Earlier this year, the major sports betting platforms formed the Responsible Online Gaming Association to address problem gambling.

The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process is under control, after a botched overhaul over the past year that some colleges say has dented incoming classes. Thomas is among what retirement experts are calling "silver squatters" — adults in their mid-50s who are even more woefully unprepared than some boomers, despite being about a decade away from retirement. This group of Gen Xers — the generation of Americans aged 43 to 59 — largely expects to postpone or work past their retirement. AdvertisementA majority also don't expect to receive any inheritance, despite their boomer predecessors holding onto trillions in wealth. The gap in retirement readiness could be due to the "unique" challenges of Gen Xers, according to Dylan Tyson, the head of retirement strategies at Prudential. Around half of Gen Xers are saving without a general plan for retirement, Prudential found.

Without a doubt, my mom expected to be free of dependents decades ago. But here I am, 39, unable to save a cent, in need of her financial support. I was otherwise financially independent, worked three jobs, had a good chunk of money saved, and my life was planned out. Not only was I feeling the effects of financial strain from the cost of school, but physical, mental, and ethical exhaustion had taken hold. She loaned me money to pay off that debt and told me I could pay my rent when I received my next student loan payment.

It's never too early to start thinking about saving for college, and a 529 plan can help with that. A 529 plan is great for saving on taxes, but its lack of flexibility makes it less valuable to me. She's had a 529 plan since she was only a few weeks old. Your contributions can grow tax-free in a 529 plan. CNN —Newly updated vaccines against Covid-19 will be in pharmacies soon, just as the US is experiencing a surge of infections. Experts say it depends on your health, whether you’ve recently had Covid-19, which vaccine you plan to get and when it’s convenient for you. For that reason, he’s going to hold off on getting the updated shot. Ranney noted that the updated mRNA shots from Pfizer and Moderna will probably be available first, with Novavax’s vaccine coming in a few weeks. “The reality is that we’ve had waves of Covid every summer for the last few years, and so I think we have to kind of do a reset or rethink about how we’re doing Covid vaccine delivery,” Hotez said.

This means that CD rates of 5% APY will likely decline and get less competitive. CD ladders can help you earn a great rate for longer, no matter what happens to CD rates. The best CD rates for short-term CDs are currently around 5% annual percentage yield, but that might not stay true for long. Building a CD ladder with terms paying 5% or moreRight now, short-term CDs offer better rates than long-term CDs, so our example CD ladder is shorter-term. CD ladders aren't suited to every purposeWhile CD ladders can be a good strategy for locking in high interest rates while maintaining liquidity, they aren't suited to every purpose.

The first thing Lucie Castets intends to do as France’s next prime minister is to peel back the age of retirement to 62. To pay for at least some of that, she will introduce a tax on the country’s ultrarich. Ms. Castets, the candidate of choice of the left-wing coalition that won the most seats in France’s snap legislative elections that ended in July, has not been tapped for the job. “We are in a somewhat Kafkaesque, surreal situation, where a candidate for the post of prime minister is campaigning for a job that she cannot exercise,” Rémi Lefebvre, a professor of political science at the University of Lille, said. Almost seven weeks since those elections ended in deadlock, with neither left, right nor center winning a majority, France remains intractably stuck.

But the consequences — but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. CNN —The United States on Friday unveiled a massive tranche of sanctions in the latest effort to target Russia’s war machine as the war with Ukraine continues. The sanctions from the US Treasury and State Departments hit nearly 400 people and entities both in and outside Russia, including China, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, according to a press release from the Treasury Department. The sanctions – unveiled ahead of Ukrainian Independence Day – specifically target those supporting the Russian supply chain and defense base, as well as those helping Moscow to evade current sanctions. They come as Ukraine has launched an audacious incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. This story is breaking and will be updated.

After decades of caring for his autistic son, Ryan, Adam Murphy, a 51-year-old father of three from Gloucestershire, England, noticed that Ryan, 27, was becoming a bit more open to trying new things. His son, Mr. Murphy realized, might be able to take his first airplane ride. But traveling would not be without difficulties. “Going to our local supermarket could be a challenge,” said Mr. Murphy. When I was a high school educator, I got a surprising phone call from a parent one morning. I was speechless — I'd never heard someone ask to volunteer at the high school level before. AdvertisementBut I don't see many parents in school hallways in middle and high school. Family involvement dwindles every year after 5th grade, and by high school, I only see parents discussing serious stuff like grades and college admissions. Some parents who usher at plays or poetry readings enjoy it so much, they say they want to go back to high school again.

My husband is about to start his 19th year of teaching, our eldest is starting 7th grade, and our youngest is starting 1st grade. Most of our parent friends try to control for all the variables — school, teachers, and sometimes even friends or classmates — and we've learned that it rarely works as intended. Even though the school was "better" on paper, it did not mean it was the better academic situation for every student. My husband and I, who are actively hands-off when requesting teachers, broke our rule regarding our youngest starting pre-K in our public independent school district. Though her teacher was amazing, still, our youngest had a completely different experience and struggled through most of her first year.

The U.S. economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than originally reported in the 12-month period through March 2024, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. Wall Street had been waiting for the revisions numbers, with many economists expecting a sizeable reduction in the originally reported figures. "The labor market appears weaker than originally reported," said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. "A deteriorating labor market will allow the Fed to highlight both sides of the dual mandate and investors should expect the Fed to prepare markets for a cut at the September meeting." Nonfarm payroll jobs totaled 158.7 million through July, an increase of 1.6% from the same month in 2023.
