Los Angeles CNN —Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is expected to announce his decision Thursday afternoon on whether to recommend resentencing in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents more than three decades ago. A judge will ultimately decide on the brothers’ case, and a hearing on the matter has been scheduled for November 26. The attorneys also said a letter Erik Menendez wrote to a cousin months before the killings alludes to the abuse he endured. A 17-year-old kayaker spent nearly 12 hours treading water and clinging to his kayak Wednesday after becoming separated from his high school paddling group, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The U.S. Coast Guard Hawaii Pacific, working with the Honolulu Fire Department and other agencies, rescued the teen Thursday morning. He was separated from the group around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Coast Guard said in a statement on Facebook. Video released by the Coast Guard showed the moment boaters pulled the boy from the water. The teen, who has not been named, was in serious but stable condition, the Coast Guard said.

A gruesome death that was initially reported to be a bear attack is now being investigated by Montana authorities as a vicious homicide. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office in Montana received a call around 10 a.m. Saturday regarding the discovery of a dead man in a tent 2.5 miles up Moose Creek Road. The caller indicated that the death may have been caused by a bear attack. Evidence gathered through an autopsy further indicated that this was a homicide,” the sheriff’s office said. Authorities described the incident as a “vicious attack” and said detectives are working to develop and track down leads.

Seven years ago, the bodies of two teenage girls were discovered near a hiking trail outside the small Indiana town of Delphi. Allen worked at a CVS in Delphi and had processed photos for Libby’s family without charging them, her grandparents have said. Investigators found the images on Libby’s cellphone and released them days after the girls' bodies were discovered in a bid to identify a possible suspect. Allen, who was interviewed by authorities in 2017 and admitted being at the trail the day the teens vanished, was arrested in 2022.
