But some educators say the real threat isn't AI, but a "lagging and outdated approach to education." Rebecca Tan, a political science lecturer at the National University of Singapore, told Insider AI detection tools can be "notoriously inaccurate." Instead of relying on AI detection tools, educators need to get innovative as AI tools become ubiquitous — through ideas like having students submit the introductions to their essays first, Tan said. We canned our own tomatoes and turned ice cream by hand but also traveled to the East Coast for b’nai mitzvah. This summer a little town of a few thousand near my family’s farm held a Pride parade — for the fourth time. There’s even a small queer community at the little high school I attended. [1/8] U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden board a plane as they depart for Maui from Reno, Nevada, U.S., August 21, 2023. "It’s going to be an emotional day for everyone," White House spokesperson Olivia Dalton told reporters on Air Force One. Biden, who is seeking reelection in 2024, has been criticized by some Republicans and others for his initial response to the Maui fires. Biden said on Aug. 10 he would expand federal aid to Hawaii and promised help to anyone who needed it. Biden himself said he did not want to travel to Maui until he was assured he would not interfere with emergency response efforts.

Two members of the Little Rock Nine criticized a state decision regarding an AP African American Studies course. In the North Little Rock and Jacksonville North Pulaski school districts, officials announced that the course would count as a "local elective" instead. In interviews with NBC News, Little Rock Nine members Elizabeth Eckford and Terrence Roberts spoke out against the state's actions. The AP African American Studies course was offered by Central High during the previous school year, and it will also be an option for students during the new school year. Huckabee Sanders, who was elected to the governorship last November after serving as White House press secretary under then-President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2019, is also a graduate of Central High.

I'm entering my senior year of college, and I wish I knew some things as a freshman. I now think back to the version of me three years ago entering college as a freshman at a different school — confused about what this new life would be like. As I enter my senior year, here's what I wish I knew as an incoming freshman. I learned that a lot of college was having to take classes just to fulfill requirements. Like a lot in life, making friends in college is hard but not impossible.

In two weeks, the new school year will begin at Florida’s New College, the progressive public liberal arts school singled out by Gov. Hampshire College, a small private liberal arts school in New England, has offered financial aid to New College students so they can transfer without tuition increases. Last week, New College’s leadership announced that it was moving to abolish the gender studies department. Given that Rufo frames the New College takeover as a demonstration project to be repeated by red states nationwide, I’d expect attempts to scrap gender studies to spread. Rufo speaks a lot about academic excellence and the virtues of a classical liberal education.

Back-to-school season is here — and with it come a host of stressors and anxieties for parents and children alike. Separation anxiety looms. Curb your child's — and your own — separation anxietyNearly all children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old have some level of separation anxiety, according to Stanford Medicine. Parents struggle with separation anxiety, too — especially parents of "pandemic babies," says Aramyan. If that's you, work to avoid projecting your anxiety onto your kids at school or daycare drop off.

The new bureaucracy is an offshoot of Gov. Ron DeSantis’s increasingly muscular push for “parental rights” in education, with new laws and regulations that broadly restrict classroom instruction on gender and sexuality, including in high school, and prevent transgender students and staff members from using group bathrooms that match their gender identity. Teachers will also be barred from asking students for their preferred pronouns and could lose their professional certification for violating the new laws. Course lists and classroom libraries are also under the microscope, with districts seeking to excise material that touches on gender and sexuality, including in classics like “Romeo and Juliet.”Here is how some Florida school districts are interpreting the new laws. They Have a Form for ThatThe new regulations have created a bureaucratic tangle, with several counties sending parents forms that must be filled out if they want their child referred to by something other than their legal name.

The College Board AP Psychology course contains such content.”“College Board requires educators to teach the entire curriculum for an AP course for college credit consideration,” it said, “therefore AP Psychology is no longer a potential course option for Florida students to receive college credit.”Other school districts in Florida made similar announcements. In the current fight over AP Psychology, the College Board has indicated it doesn’t plan to negotiate with Florida. That AP Psychology has even been caught in the crosshairs of the “Don’t Say Gay” law may surprise many Florida parents. In April, that plan became clearer when the Florida State Board of Education expanded its ban on instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity through the 12th grade. It was the fifth most popular AP course in the state in 2021.

A Lesson in Tender, Tangy Lemon Bars

I had no idea what lemon bars were. My classmates said that my new school would turn my Chinese American self into a banana or a Twinkie — yellow on the outside, white within. Because the lemon bars didn’t taste like a loss of identity, but an expansion of it. But from-scratch treats from midcentury Americana were foreign to me — and lemon bars tasted especially mysterious, at once sour and sweet, rich and sharp. The next year, Betty Crocker’s “Cooky Book” included a recipe for Lemon Squares, which extended its popularity beyond local community cookbooks.

This is how Komsomolskaya School Number 1 is marking the opening of a new school desk, a so-called “hero desk” emblazoned with the face and biography of one of Russia’s war dead, once a pupil at this very school. The desks are part of a pan-Russian initiative called the “New School Project” and are funded by “United Russia,” a staunchly pro-Putin party. As of early May, United Russia said there were more than 14,000 desks in 9,000 schools across the country. Local news reports suggest some schools use the desks to reward good behavior or good grades. The desks across the country are standardized: green, with military photographs, a biography, medals awarded (often posthumously) and the soldier’s date of death.

More than 70 percent of the city’s 301,700 retail jobs are held by Black, Hispanic and Asian workers, a disproportionate share of whom did not finish college. But that amounted to only 4,300 new jobs, Mr. Bowles said. The growth of home health care services has also been sharp, with a gain of 41,700 new jobs, but those positions tend to pay far less than some retail jobs. The working-age population of New York City was down 400,000 people in March and April of 2023, compared to the start of 2020, which hurt retail demand, Dr. Parrott said. To counter the losses in retail, Mr. Bowles said, the city should invest in job training programs that can help retail workers transition to other fields.
