Habitat loss, overfishingand their fate as bycatch in fishing nets have threatened porbeagle shark populations. Northwest Atlantic porbeagle sharks are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. The team pieced together several factors that indicated the shark had been eaten and the tag excreted by a larger predator that gobbled up the shark, Anderson said. Unusual suspectsPorbeagles belong to a family called lamnid sharks, which also includes great white sharks and mako sharks. Gutteridge, who was not involved in the study, agrees that a white shark is the most likely culprit.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to allow private equity firms to take a maximum 10% stake in teams. The league has never allowed private equity investment before. No other league takes a percentage of the so-called carry — the percentage of a fund's investment profits that managers typically receive as compensation — for all private equity firms. The NFL has informally told investment firms that if they make a return on an investment, it wants a portion of the profits to be returned to the league. It was unclear if the NFL's plans to take a piece of profits would deter future investment from private equity.

Lobster fishing is a game of inches, and the number of inches is about to change. Fishing regulators are instituting a new rule that lobster fishermen must abide by stricter minimum sizes for crustaceans they harvest. The changes do not apply in Canada, which has an even larger lobster fishing industry than the U.S. Some scientists who study the fishery have supported the minimum size change. CNN —The Dallas Cowboys have become the first professional sports team to be valued at over $10 billion, according to Sportico’s 2024 NFL rankings that were released on Tuesday. The Cowboys, owned by Jerry Jones, were valued at $10.32 billion, far and away the most valuable franchise in the league and an increase of over a billion dollars on the previous estimate of $9.2 billion in February. The Cowboys remain immensely popular though, generating an estimated revenue of $1.2 billion in 2023, 50% higher than the second ranked NFL team, the Los Angeles Rams, according to Sportico. The Rams are valued at $7.79 billion and leapfrogged the New York Giants to take second place but are not in the same stratosphere as Dallas. Per Sportico’s research, the average NFL franchise is worth $5.93 billion, an improvement of 15.4% over last year, as the league continues to be the world’s most financially successful in any sport in terms of team value.

With the ground already saturated from Debby, the National Weather Service said localized downpours could result in additional flash flooding throughout the coastal Carolinas. “Right now, it’s thundering, sprinkling and pretty dark so I’d say it’s going to start raining hard here pretty soon,” she said. Even in drier areas, more than 35,000 homes and businesses in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont still had no electricity as of Sunday afternoon, according to the tracking website PowerOutage.us. Debby’s last day and night over the U.S. inundated parts of New York, Pennsylvania and New England with rain and flash flooding on Friday, prompting evacuations and rescues. CNN —The New England Patriots won their first game in over 24 years without legendary coach Bill Belichick in charge, beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in their opening preseason game on Thursday. Third-year quarterback Bailey Zappe played a larger role, before rookie QB Joe Milton III finished the game. Milton III throws a pass to teammates Terrell Jennings in the second half against the Panthers. The last time New England won without Belichick on the sidelines was on January 2, 2000, when the Pete Carroll-led Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 20-3 in Foxborough. During his time with the team, Belichick won six Super Bowl titles and is famed for his pairing with legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

Justices weren’t in a hurry to hear the caseThe immunity case first arrived at the justices’ door in December. Perhaps, she hoped to influence lower court judges to read the Roberts opinion as more flexible for a future prosecution. It was a particularly extreme section of Roberts’ opinion – decided by the kind of 5-4 vote the chief justice usually tried to avoid.
