Before Covid, Gabe Whitney, a 41-year-old from West Bath, Maine, didn’t think much about vaccines. He began following anti-vax figures like Del Bigtree, Robert Malone and, of course, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Whitney already admired for his environmental work. Kennedy has long touted an illusory connection between vaccines and autism, and has repeatedly said that pandemic restrictions arose from a C.I.A. plan to “clamp down totalitarian control.” If Kennedy was so wrong, Whitney thought, it didn’t make sense that his critics wouldn’t debate him. (I requested an interview with Kennedy, but never heard back from the person I was told could schedule it.)

Opinion | How to Change an Entrenched Police Culture

To the Editor:Re “Police in Minneapolis Blatantly Disregarded Civil Rights, U.S. Says” (front page, June 17):Once a police culture becomes entrenched, whether it is good or bad, it is very difficult to change it. I am a retired deputy police chief with over 25 years of experience. I worked in Portsmouth, N.H., in a department that had a rather rough reputation when I joined it in 1987. There were officers who worked there who liked to hurt people, who had a “thump ’em and dump ’em” mentality, who abused their authority and power. Officers who did not operate that way — and I was one of those officers — tended to be isolated, viewed with distrust, sometimes even threatened as a way to force them to leave the department.

The manager of a morgue at Harvard Medical School has been charged with selling body parts from donated cadavers and allowing buyers to come to the morgue to choose which parts they wanted, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday. Prosecutors said that the manager, Cedric Lodge, 55, and his wife, Denise Lodge, 63, both of Goffstown, N.H., and three others had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pennsylvania on charges of conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen goods. A sixth person, Jeremy Pauley, 41, of Bloomsburg, Pa., was charged separately, prosecutors said. A seventh, Candace Chapman Scott, of Little Rock, Ark., was previously indicted in Arkansas, prosecutors said. The defendants were all part of a nationwide network that bought and sold human remains stolen from Harvard Medical School and a mortuary in Little Rock where Ms. Scott worked, prosecutors said.

A man from New Hampshire faces up to up to 10 years in prison after threatening to kill a United States senator because he was angry that the senator was “blocking military promotions,” according to federal court documents. The U.S. attorney’s office for the District of New Hampshire announced on Friday that Brian Landry, 66, of Franklin, N.H., had been charged with threatening to assault, kidnap or murder a United States official. Mr. Landry called a senator’s district field office on May 17 and left a threatening voice mail message, according to court documents. The senator who was threatened by Mr. Landry was not named in court documents, which only detailed that the senator has been in office since January 2021. Photo: BRIAN SNYDER/REUTERSDoes it matter politically now that a jury has found Donald Trump liable for battery and defamation against a woman who said he assaulted her sometime in the 1990s? It’s impossible to know what really happened in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store when Donald Trump met E. Jean Carroll . There were no witnesses, Ms. Carroll can’t recall the exact year it happened, and she waited until 2019 to go public with her story. Mr. Trump denies it happened and said Ms. Carroll isn’t his “type.”
WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In New Hampshire, a granite icon that symbolized the state’s grit has not faded from memory. May 5, 2023FRANCONIA NOTCH, N.H. — In the annals of natural rock formations resembling human faces, New Hampshire’s Old Man of the Mountain was an unrivaled specimen. Beloved as he was, the Old Man, may he rest in peace, was a pile of rocks — until the wee hours of May 3, 2003, when the five slabs unceremoniously collapsed, victims of the same slow-moving geologic forces that had sculpted the human likeness in the first place. So why, 20 years later, is the stone face still mourned in New Hampshire like a fallen president, the subject of songs and poems, a Statehouse proclamation and a virtual remembrance event that drew hundreds of viewers on Wednesday?
Big Promises From Vivek Ramaswamy

“We will use our military to annihilate the Mexican drug cartels.”While in Keene, N.H., on Wednesday, Mr. Ramaswamy mused about using a local precision-weapons plant to elaborate on his threat of military action against organized crime across the southern border in Mexico. And Mr. Ramaswamy has conceded that among some libertarian-minded voters, the promise sounds disconcertingly bellicose. It might also resonate with those who understand how lopsided the youth vote is in favor of Democrats. He would prevent American businesses from expanding into Chinese markets unless “our demands are met” by Beijing. Those include more intellectual property protections and an end to required joint ventures with state-controlled businesses.
arena that is home to the Maple Leafs was jammed and jumping like a mosh pit on a damp, cold — even for Canadian springtime — Saturday night. Far south in Tampa, Fla., center John Tavares scored in overtime against the Lightning to end an excruciating stretch of playoff futility for the Maple Leafs. Back in Toronto, near and far from the outdoor crowd watching the game on a ginormous screen, car horns bleated across this longtime playoff wasteland. The mob, some members of it screaming, some crying, some setting off fireworks, some suddenly shirtless, throbbed like a nightclub throng. A few dramatic celebrators climbed lamp posts, hanging by one hand and filming the scenes with the other.
Florida Panthers Upset Record-Setting Boston Bruins

These Boston Bruins have not been accustomed to losing streaks. during the regular season, winning 65 games, a single-season record; claiming the Presidents’ Trophy with a league-high of 135 points, 22 points clear of every other team; and outscoring their opponents by 128 goals. But after all that winning, a three-game losing streak, just their second of the season, came at an inopportune time. The Florida Panthers defeated the Bruins, 4-3, in overtime of Game 7 of their first-round playoff series on Sunday night in Boston to complete a rare comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. And they did so against some of the most formidable opposition in the league’s 106-year history: The Bruins had 43 more points than the Panthers did in the regular season.
On the day of a special election in New Hampshire in April 2021, Michael Drouin posted a fake advertisement on Craigslist offering a free trailer and listed the phone number of Bill Boyd, a candidate for a state House seat. Mr. Drouin was indicted in November 2022 on a felony charge of interference with election communications. On Monday, Mr. Drouin, 30, of Merrimack, N.H., pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of creating a false document, an election law offense, admitting that he knowingly interfered with Mr. Boyd’s ability to use his cellphone on Election Day. The charge is a misdemeanor, not a felony, but it still cost him his right to vote in the state. People who are convicted of a willful violation of the state’s election laws lose their right to vote under the New Hampshire Constitution.

In March, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi announced they would slash prices of their most widely used insulin products in response to growing public pressure to address rising costs.
ROCHESTER, N.H. — Don’t ask Chris Christie what “lane” there is for him in the Republican primary. Don’t ask how someone polling at 1 percent, who is sharply critical of Donald J. Trump, could possibly win the 2024 nomination when the party base has no tolerance for attacks on the former president. “I think there’s this fiction about lanes,” Mr. Christie said on Thursday in New Hampshire, his second exploratory visit in a month. At the front of that lane right now is Donald Trump. Addiction is an issue Mr. Christie has long been passionate about, and he visited the same program, Hope on Haven Hill, eight years ago while running for president.

Maidment jokingly knocked the senator for ordering grits, a dish more common in Scott's South Carolina than in northern New England. "The people that are most stressed out about it are the donors," said Chip Felkel, a South Carolina Republican operative. Chris Ager, the chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party and an attendee at the Scott event, said the state's Republicans "welcome him to the debate."

Life Is So Expensive That Price Nostalgia Is Now a Thing

People used to talk wistfully about how movie tickets were $3 in the 1980s, or how a Big Mac cost a couple of bucks in the 1990s. Now they are nostalgic for the prices of just a few years ago. Russell Max Simon watched inflation play out in the cost of the avocados he likes to put on top of his breakfast. A 41-year-old marketing consultant in Rumney, N.H., Mr. Simon was dismayed to see their price climb from $1 each in early 2021 to $2.50 one year later.
