Federal officials Wednesday rejected claims the mysterious drones spotted in New Jersey are coming from an Iranian "mothership." That mothership is off … the East Coast of the United States of America. “There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States,” she said. Phil Murphy should declare a state of emergency and issue an executive order banning recreational drone use at night. “Residents are increasingly alarmed by the surge in drone activity after dark, raising concerns about public safety and security,” Golden said.

The North Carolina state Board of Elections voted Wednesday to reject a Republican challenge to throw out 60,000 ballots in a state Supreme Court race that the Democratic incumbent leads by just over 700 votes. A second, partial hand recount of the race increased Riggs’ lead marginally, but that total is not considered official by North Carolina's elections board. Griffin or the North Carolina Republican Party could appeal the decision, which would insert the case into the state court system. Joining in the challenge to the North Carolina elections board board was the Republican candidate in a close state House race that will determine whether the GOP maintains its supermajority in the chamber. Democrats currently control the North Carolina board of elections.

WASHINGTON — In legacy mode, outgoing President Joe Biden’s White House is warning the Republicans who are about to take power against repealing his biggest achievements. During his 2024 campaign, Trump said, “We will rescind all unspent funds under the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act.”Republicans won a 53-seat Senate majority and a slim House majority of 220-215 in the 2024 elections. Other Republicans say there are plenty of other places for the GOP to find cuts to finance their multi-trillion-dollar effort. Murphy said he also favors slashing Affordable Care Act subsidies under the Inflation Reduction Act, which the Biden administration has used to limit insurance premiums for many in the middle class. “I think a lot of it needs to go away.”Asked whether the slim margins could hinder House Republicans when it comes to passing the major party-line measures, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said it’s a familiar dynamic for them.

WASHINGTON — A massive defense policy bill on track to clear the House on Wednesday includes a ban on gender-affirming care for children of servicemembers — a provision that sparked opposition from the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. The sweeping must-pass bill — known as the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA — was negotiated between senior House and Senate lawmakers. “[B]lanketly denying health care to people who need it — just because of a biased notion against transgender people — is wrong,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday. The NDAA, which authorizes appropriations for the Defense Department and sets defense policies, expires at the end of the year. However, House and Senate negotiators couldn't reach agreement on "sufficient pro-life protections," the speaker's office said.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office are urging a New York judge not to throw out President-elect Donald Trump's criminal conviction in the hush money case, offering a variety of suggestions on how the case could proceed without interfering with his presidential duties. They also knocked Trump's claim that the case should be "immediately" dismissed because he's already protected by presidential immunity. Judge Juan Merchan indefinitely postponed Trump's sentencing last month so both sides could present their arguments on the issue. Prosecutors presented a number of possible ways forward, including staying Trump's sentencing until after he's out of office. "To be sure, the People do not dispute that presidential immunity requires accommodation during a President’s time in office.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has rejected Donald Trump's request to walk away from her office's $486 million civil fraud judgment against the president-elect. Russia is providing sanctuary to Bashar al-Assad, having transported the former Syrian leader there “in the most secure way possible” after the swift collapse of his regime, Russia’s deputy foreign minister told NBC News in an exclusive interview Tuesday. “Russia is not a party to the convention that established the International Criminal Court,” Ryabkov said when asked if the Kremlin would hand over Assad for trial. Separately, in March 2023, the court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for “war crimes” in overseeing the unlawful abduction and deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia. And last month, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza. Israel, Ryabkov said, should observe that agreement and it should “not infringe” on Syria’s territorial integrity.

The exact location of Israeli forces was unclear. And U.S. NATO ally Turkey said Israel was "once against displaying its occupying mentality," condemning its actions while Syria strives for "peace and stability." But Israel’s ground offensive carries “significant risks,” especially if they are going beyond the buffer zone as Netanyahu hinted, warned Michael A. Horowitz, a geopolitical and security analyst. The roughly 155-square-mile buffer zone between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights was created after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. Netanyahu said Sunday that the agreement that established the zone had “collapsed” after Syrian soldiers abandoned their positions amid the overthrow of Assad.

“If she wins, it’s the end of seniority,” said a House Democrat who has served decades in Congress. Some powerful committee leaders have already stepped aside amid challenges from relatively younger upstarts. For Democrats, seniority has long played an outsized role in determining whom rank-and-file members selected as their committee leaders. The swift collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime represents a devastating defeat for Iran, the latest in a string of setbacks that have punctured long held assumptions in the West about Tehran’s military prowess. As the rebels pressed ahead, there was no concerted effort to stop the advance with Russian warplanes or Iranian-backed proxy forces. “Assad was effectively abandoned because his only friends ... Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, no longer had the capacity to help,” the official added. The United States and other governments had feared an Israeli attack on Iran would produce an overwhelming response against Israel by Iran’s proxies. Those officers had decades of experience in Syria and a network of contacts among the militants in Iran’s proxy network, including Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, Yemenis and others.

He did so as the rebels entered and seized Damascus, seemingly with little fightback from Assad’s government forces. Syria dominated international consciousness for almost a decade, its civil war erupting after Assad crushed peaceful protests during the region-wide 2011 Arab Spring. But until last month the conflict had been largely at a stalemate, after Assad’s forces regained control of much of the country. The conflict in Syria partly contributed to a wave of mass migration into Europe, met by a right-wing backlash across the continent that is still reverberating today. Much of this diaspora has also responded to Assad’s downfall with astonished glee, some rushing to return home.
