KYIV, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Ukraine wants the Black Sea grain export deal expanded to include more ports and goods, and hopes a decision to extend the agreement for at least a year will be taken next week, Ukraine's deputy infrastructure minister said on Tuesday. "We are already ... demanding inspections be streamlined or inspections of departed (ships) be cancelled, because it makes no sense. Moscow has said it has received guarantees the grain corridor will not be used for military purposes. Vaskov said Kyiv advocated the exclusively peaceful use of the grain corridor, and that the current agreement involved the export of fertilizers. "Ukraine has confirmed and confirms now that the grain corridor is only for ships that take part in the initiative - both in the past and in the future," the deputy minister said.
Hossein Amirabdollahian claimed, however, that Tehran didn’t know if its drones were used against Ukraine and stated Iran’s commitment to stopping the conflict. Moscow has said those came in response to what it alleged were Ukrainian attacks on Crimea, the region that Russia illegally annexed in 2014. A worker repairs damaged lines after a missile strike on a power plant in an undisclosed part of Ukraine. The Russian forces targeted the city and the areas around it with heavy artillery, as they have done repeatedly since July. Elsewhere in the region, Ukrainian forces shot down a drone and another projectile, according to Reznichenko.
Ukrainian forces brace for bloody fight for Kherson

Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russian-installed administration in Kherson region, said on Thursday that he hoped Russian forces would put up a fight. With control of the Dnipro's west bank, military experts said, Ukrainian forces would have a springboard from which to seize a bridgehead on the east side for an advance on Crimea. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it appeared the Russians already had begun "an organized, phased withdrawal" from the Dnipro's west bank. But Ukrainian troops could also face serious obstacles that could stall their takeover of Kherson, including booby traps and concentrated Russian artillery and rocket fire from the east bank, Hodges said. The unit, with six armoured personnel carriers, took its positions in September after Ukrainian forces drove Russian troops back to Kherson's border with Mykolaiv province.

REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The United States on Friday announced an additional $400 million in military aid to Ukraine, including refurbishing T-72 tanks and missiles for HAWK air defense systems for Kyiv. Deputy Czech Defense Minister Tomas Kopecny told Reuters that in total 90 tanks from third parties and private stocks would be modernized. In October, Reuters first wrote about the initiative to furnish HAWK interceptor missiles to Ukraine. The Army replaced it with the MIM-104 Patriot, and the Marines shifted entirely to using smaller, more portable air defense systems.
Is Russian President Vladimir Putin stepping back from the nuclear ledge? Concerns over Russia’s possible use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine had lessened recently, the sources said. Anadolu Agency | Anadolu Agency | Getty ImagesGlobal wheat prices rose sharply Monday following Russia's withdrawal from the Black Sea grain export deal over the weekend. The increases come after Russia announced Saturday that it was suspending its involvement in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allowed vital agricultural products to be exported from several Ukrainian ports. Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia of starting to sabotage the grain deal in September. Antonov told Russian media on Saturday that Kyiv's "reckless actions" had caused Moscow to suspend implementation of the grain deal. Many of the grain ships that left Ukraine in recent months, under the grain deal, were bound for both European and African ports.

Kherson's capture could leave thousands of Russian troops trapped on the Dnipro's western bank unable to cross easily to the east. Expectations rose last week that Russian forces were girding to relinquish Kherson, when Moscow-appointed occupation authorities began evacuating tens of thousands of residents by ferries to the Dnipro's east bank. Kherson is the only regional capital Russian forces have taken in the "special military operation" Putin launched in February. But the commander of the Ukrainian unit visited by Reuters on Wednesday saw no sign of Russians leaving. Rusting hulks of Russian armored vehicles marked confrontations with Ukrainian troops who advanced last month some 20 km (12.4 miles) in two days to their current lines.
Ukraine retaking swathes of Kherson region would deprive Moscow of that land corridor. FRESH WATER SUPPLIESFresh water supply to Crimea would also be imperilled if Ukraine retakes Kherson region. MYKOLAIV, Ukraine—As Ukraine has recaptured more than 3,000 square miles of territory this fall, its forces have followed a blueprint that plays to their strengths: using strong intelligence and precision weaponry to hit Russians’ supply lines and command posts and weaken their ability to fight. Advancing Ukrainian troops can then overwhelm an enemy that has been hollowed out from behind. That approach has limited Ukrainian casualties, military and civilian, and helped spare some of the country’s cities from the major destruction that would result from more traditional siege tactics.

Mykolaiv regional officials identified the missiles as S-300s, anti-aircraft weapons that Russian forces have been firing at ground targets. Sunday's attack was enough to convince Begun, a shipyard worker, to send his wife and two children to stay with his parents in western Ukraine. Choking back tears, Liudmyla Tuchevska, 48, said her family had fortunately been absent when the missiles struck and that she had learned of the attack from a social media chat. ROME, Oct 23 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he believed there was a chance for peace in Ukraine, even as Russia warned the conflict there could escalate. "There is the prospect for peace, it will come around at some moment," said Macron at a conference in Rome aimed at seeking ways to promote world peace. Russia fired missiles and drones into Ukrainian-held Mykolaiv on Sunday, and Moscow said the conflict was trending towards "uncontrolled escalation". Without providing evidence, Shoigu said Ukraine could escalate with a "dirty bomb" - conventional explosives laced with radioactive material. Ukraine does not possess nuclear weapons, while Russia has said it could protect Russian territory with its nuclear arsenal.
KYIV, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Critical infrastructure across Ukraine was pounded by more than a dozen Russian missiles on Saturday, the Ukrainian air force said, with several regions reporting strikes on energy facilities and power outages. Ukraine's air force command reported that 33 missiles had been fired at Ukraine on Saturday morning, and that 18 of those had been shot down. Since Oct. 10, Russia has launched a series of devastating salvos at Ukraine's power infrastructure, which have hit at least half of its thermal power generation and up to 40% of the entire system. "Deliberate strikes on Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure are part of Russia’s genocide of Ukrainians," Kuleba wrote on Twitter. Moscow has acknowledged targeting energy infrastructure but denies targeting civilians.
How water has been weaponised in Ukraine

Local people fill up bottles with fresh drinking water, as the main supply pipeline for drinking water for the city was damaged in Kherson region at the beginning of Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Mykolaiv, Ukraine October 16, 2022. The attacks have disrupted electricity across large parts of Ukraine, killing dozens of people and leaving other places without access to clean water. "Ukraine's water infrastructure, from dams to water treatment and wastewater systems, has been extensively targeted by Russia," Gleick wrote in an email. After nearly a month without water, city officials were forced to begin pumping yellowish, salty water from the Southern Buh River estuary to clear sewers and let residents flush toilets and wash. Bottles of water are available in stores, but many residents, impoverished by war, depend on bottled water donations from abroad, even as pools of water snake onto streets from leaking mains.
Ukrainian forces began moving in August to reclaim Kherson, a strategically important ship-building centre on the sprawling Dnipro River. In recent weeks, they have driven the Russians back 20-30 kms (13-20 miles) on parts of the battlefront. Russian-appointed occupation authorities this week began evacuating thousands of civilians from Kherson to the southern bank, denounced by Kyiv as forced deportations. The troops said that they would not allow the Russians to retreat without a fight. Officials from the United States, the United Kingdom and France will raise Iran‘s apparent provision of drones to Russia in a closed door meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, a U.S. official confirmed to NBC News. “Iran’s supply of these specific types of UAVs to Russia is a violation of UN Security Council resolution to 2231 and it is this issue for the U.N. Security Council,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters Tuesday. Zelenskyy described the apparent move by Russia to acquire Iranian-made drones as an “admission by the Kremlin that it is militarily and politically bankrupt. The official also said the drones launched by Russia inside Ukraine appeared to come from Iran. Iran has denied the claim that it has delivered drones to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
Oct 19 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday declared martial law in four partially occupied regions of Ukraine that Russia claims as its own. Although Russia has unilaterally annexed and does not fully control any of the four regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia - it is imposing martial law there as if they were Russian territories. However, a partial mobilisation has already taken place in Russia and been extended to the occupied regions, so it is unclear if more men will be called up. The decree says that under martial law, authorities will have the power to enact measures to "meet the needs of Russia's armed forces", and that "territorial defence" will be carried out. Saldo announced on Wednesday that 50,000-60,000 people would be evacuated from part of the Kherson region over the next six days as a Ukrainian counteroffensive gathers pace.

But their power supply means that residents who had earlier fled the village are returning. 'WE HAVE ENOUGH'The earlier fighting left the villages without power and water, prompting the flight of all but 216 of Lymany’s 4,000 residents and 36 of Lupareve’s 1,200 residents, Panashiy said. But three weeks ago, Ukrainian troops restored power to the villages via a cable they laid to a distant factory, villagers said. But red aircraft warning lights blinked unceasingly on the towers, Panashiy said, providing Russian gunners with aiming points.
Three energy facilities were destroyed by the enemy today," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his Wednesday night video address. Ukraine had so far shot down a total of 233 Iranian-made drones used by Russia, including 21 on Wednesday, Zelenskiy said. Ukraine accuses Russia of using Iran-made Shahed-136 "kamikaze drones", which fly to their target and detonate. KHERSON BATTLE LOOMSIn Kherson, the only regional capital Russian forces have captured since their invasion eight months ago, the Russian-appointed administration prepared an evacuation. Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded an all-Russia war effort and declared martial law on Wednesday in areas of Ukraine occupied by his forces.
"The situation in the area of the 'Special Military Operation' can be described as tense," Sergei Surovikin, the Russian air force general now commanding Russia's invasion forces, told the state-owned Rossiya 24 news channel. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterOn Kherson, Surovikin said: "The situation in this area is difficult. Russian forces in Kherson have been driven back by 20-30 km (13-20 miles) in the last few weeks and are at risk of being pinned against the western bank of the 2,200-kilometre-long Dnipro river that bisects Ukraine. Both Ukraine and Russia have denied targeting civilians, although Kyiv has accused Moscow's forces of war crimes. The Russian military was preparing to repel the offensive, he said, and "where the military operates, there is no place for civilians".
KYIV, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Russia launched dozens of "kamikaze" drones on Ukraine on Monday, hitting energy infrastructure and killing five people in the capital of Kyiv. Ukraine says they are Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack drones - loitering munitions that cruise towards their target before plummeting at velocity and detonating on impact. On the radar, it is one mark, and in that mark there are actually five (drones)," Ihnat said. Ukraine shot down 51 Shahed-136 drones on Oct. 17-18, Ihnat said on Tuesday. A day earlier he put the tally of downed drones at 100 since Russia began using them.
LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The new commander of Russian forces in Ukraine acknowledged on Tuesday that his troops were under broad pressure and faced hard choices, as the Russian-appointed governor of occupied Kherson province announced a partial evacuation. Russian forces in Kherson have been driven back by 20-30 km (13-20 miles) in the last few weeks and are at risk of being pinned against the right or western bank of the Dnipro River. In a video statement, Saldo accused Ukrainian forces, without citing evidence, of planning to destroy a major dam at the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Russia captured the city of Kherson largely unopposed in the early days of the invasion, and it remains the only major Ukrainian city that Moscow's forces have seized intact. "Our further plans and actions regarding the city of Kherson itself will depend on the emerging military-tactical situation.

REUTERS/Alexander ErmochenkoKYIV, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces was taking place around two towns in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, Bakhmut and Soledar, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday. Fighting has been particularly intense this weekend in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which make up the larger industrial Donbas, and the strategically important Kherson province in the south. Russian forces shelled Ukrainian positions on several fronts on Sunday, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said, with the targets including towns in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson regions. Shelling by Ukrainian forces damaged the administration building in the city Donetsk, capital of the Donetsk region, the head of its Russian-backed administration said on Sunday. There was no immediate reaction from Ukraine to the attack on Donetsk city, which was annexed by Russian-backed separatists in 2014 along with swathes of the Donbas.
