Goldman Sachs thinks that U.S.-traded shares of Barclays still have a long growth runway ahead, even after already beating the market so far in 2024. The firm initiated coverage of the banking stock with a buy rating and a 290 pence per share price target on Tuesday. Goldman analyst Chris Hallam forecasts that Barclays could grow its earnings per share twice as fast as peer firms through 2027, while a steep discount on the stock gives investors an attractive entry point. ""The Investment Bank [portion of Barclays' business] is at-scale but currently under-earning," Hallam said. Hallam noted Barclays stock currently trades at roughly six times its 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio, compared to the wider group of banks covered by Goldman that trade at seven times forward P/E.

Crude oil futures fell about 2% on Tuesday, as the rally on geopolitical risk took a pause while the market waits for Israel to strike back against Iran. The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban while it reviews an appeal from the state of a lower court ruling that had struck down the law. The state Supreme Court's decision, however, left in place the lower court’s ruling blocking a separate provision of the law that had given state prosecutors broad access to the medical records of abortion patients without due process protections. The state's near-total abortion ban, known as the LIFE Act, was signed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019 but didn’t take effect until July 2022, after it faced a legal challenge and the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. Last week, a judge in Fulton County, Georgia, struck down the state’s six-week abortion, allowing the procedure to resume and almost immediately making it legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy.

U.S. crude oil rose about 2% on Monday, as the market waited for Israel to strike Iran. Oil prices spiked last week on fears that Israel could hit Iran's oil industry in retaliation for Tehran's ballistic missile attack. The impact on the oil market would be significant if Israel struck Kharg Island, through which 90% of Iran's crude exports pass, Croft said. The worst-case scenario is a disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's crude exports flow, Gelder said. Iran might target the strait in response to an Israeli strike, which would have a far more dramatic effect on crude prices, the analyst said.

Carlos Tavares, chief executive officer of Stellantis NV, speaks during a news conference at the Fiat automobile manufacturing plant in Kragujevac, Serbia, on Monday, July 22, 2024. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares on Thursday left the door open for possible cuts to its dividend and share buybacks next year and brushed off problems with its U.S. business that led to a major profit warning this week as a "small operational error". "When you are in a context which is brutal and more demanding, if you make a small operational error, well it is immediately visible," he said, adding he was taking it as a "wake up call" and very seriously. While Stellantis is committed to its 2024 dividend, Tavares said it was too early to confirm next year's plan. "The time for 2025 has not come, we will see what will happen at the end of 2024 for a discussion and a decision for 2025," he said.
