Led by Coco Gauff and a cast of charismatic upstarts, tennis hit a sweet spot at this year’s U.S. Open with a diverse blend of old and right now, signaling the game is freshly and firmly energized as it enters a new era. At this tournament, the commanding arrival of Gauff, who won the women’s singles title Saturday evening, along with memorable performances by Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, proved that thinking wrong. At the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, a quartet of legends no longer stifled the game, overshadowing the sometimes stalled forward motion of the young players coming behind. You could feel it on the grounds, which filled with so many spectators that it often appeared there was no space to move without bruising a shoulder. This year’s event set attendance records nearly every day.

Novak Djokovic has won so many Grand Slam singles titles in so many different ways, it is getting extremely difficult to keep track of them. Djokovic, a Serb, further solidified his reputation as the greatest player of the modern era on Sunday with a clinical, straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev of Russia. He did it on an Arthur Ashe Stadium court where he spent most of his career playing the villain in matches against underdogs or longtime crowd favorites like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The nearly 24,000 spectators welcomed him with a massive roar, then showered him with the biggest one when Medvedev dumped a shot into the net to give Djokovic the title that has been surprisingly hard for the greatest hardcourt player in the sport’s history to win. “This means the world to me,” he said to the crowd just before lifting the trophy for the fourth time of his career.

Along with ramping up its domestic arms production, Moscow is turning to an old ally with a vast arsenal — North Korea. That would be a remarkable reversal from the 1950-53 Korean War, when the Soviet Union provided the communist North with weapons and ammunition. Shoigu became the first Russian defense chief to visit North Korea since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. “Russia is hoping that North Korea could swiftly establish support channels to provide it with war materials like ammunition, bombs and other supplies,” Hong said. U.S. officials have cast Moscow’s reach for North Korean weapons as a reflection of Russian military problems.

He drew level with Rafael Nadal’s 22 grand slam titles at the Australian Open, pulled clear with a men’s record 23 grand slam titles at the French Open, was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, and now has another chance to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles in the US Open final on Sunday. Standing in his way is third seed Daniil Medvedev who stunned Alcaraz in the semifinals and who has already defeated Djokovic in a US Open final before, and in straight sets. “For example, I beat him in the US Open final, he beat me in Bercy in a great match. Daniil Medvedev won the US Open in 2021. “Every Grand Slam final could be the last one,” he told reporters ahead of the final.

PinnedThe last time Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev met in a U.S. Open final, Medvedev ruined Djokovic’s ambitious plans for 2021. Djokovic was one title away from completing the calendar Grand Slam, having already won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon that year. But Medvedev defeated Djokovic for the U.S. Open title in straight sets. There’s no calendar Grand Slam on the line this time, after Carlos Alcaraz defeated Djokovic over the summer at Wimbledon. Medvedev reached the final after upsetting Alcaraz in the semifinals, and Medvedev defeated Djokovic the last time they played, in March at a tournament in Dubai.

The crowds did their part to try to propel their fan-favourite Alcaraz past Medvedev, imploring the 20-year-old Wimbledon champion to keep fighting on Arthur Ashe Stadium. "These kind of matches can happen even if I feel myself (as a) different player, more mature," Alcaraz told reporters. But while the semi-final exit was undoubtedly a bitter end to an otherwise terrific North American hardcourt stretch, Alcaraz said he could keep the defeat in perspective. "I don't think I'm gonna think about this loss for a long time. "You know, these kind of matches help you a lot to be better and grow up in these kind of situations."

NEW YORK (AP) — All four Grand Slam trophies were there. The gilded cup given to the Wimbledon men’s titlist was escorted by two people associated with that tournament’s museum. Now, two years later, Djokovic and Medvedev will again decide the U.S. Open men’s champion. Djokovic is seeking what would be a 24th Grand Slam title, more than anyone in the sport’s Open era, and fourth in New York. “Every time in a Grand Slam final, it’s another shot for history and I’m aware of it, and of course I’m very proud of it,” Djokovic said.

The Serb battled past American Ben Shelton in straight sets on Friday to set up a rematch with Russia's Medvedev, who denied him a rare calendar Grand Slam two years ago. The memory of that bitter defeat was still fresh in his mind, as Djokovic told reporters he was trying not to focus on the significance of a 24th major title that would match Margaret Court's all-time singles record. Djokovic won the Australian Open and hoisted the trophy at Roland Garros already this year. He had a chance to collect his 24th major title in Wimbledon but was denied in the finale by Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz looked visibly flustered in the second set and Medvedev won 16 out of 18 points on his serve, taking the set easily 6-1. “I don’t think I’m going to think about this loss for a long time,” Alcaraz told reporters afterwards. A final involving former-U.S. Open champions Medvedev and three-time winner Novak Djokovic on Sunday is one of obvious high quality but not the next chapter in tennis's hottest rivalry of Djokovic and Alcaraz that has had the sport buzzing. The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was the 2021 final, where the Russian claimed his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. "The challenge is you are playing a guy who has won 23 Grand Slams and I have only one," said Medvedev, who also reached the 2019 U.S. Open final losing to Rafa Nadal. That was all Alcaraz would need, holding on to take the set 6-3 and the first step in his fight back. Alcaraz would make one final stand in a breathtaking game that seesawed back and fourth, Medvedev needing four match points to close the deal.

Sept 9 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev expects Novak Djokovic to be in top form at Sunday's U.S. Open final, but the third-seeded Russian adds that he will try to produce his "best-ever version" to beat the record-23-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic, 36, is hunting a fourth U.S. Open title that would see him equal Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams and a good measure of revenge on Medvedev. For example, I beat him in the U.S. Open final, he beat me in Bercy (Paris Masters) in a great match. Carlos beat him in Wimbledon, he beat him in Cincinnati," Medvedev told reporters. And I have to be, if I want to still beat him, 10 times better than I was that day."

The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was in the 2021 final, when the Russian captured his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. Second seed Djokovic, 36, fought back from two sets down to beat fellow Serb Laslo Djere in the third round but did not drop another set on the way to his 10th U.S. Open final. "He (Djokovic) is always better than the previous time he plays," said 27-year-old Medvedev, who will be appearing in his third U.S. Open final, having also lost to Rafa Nadal in 2019. While Djokovic and Medvedev are compelling figures, neither has been fully embraced by the New York crowds they have so desperately courted. Not long ago Medvedev was Flushing Meadows' public enemy number one for his on court antics that included giving the crowd the finger during a 2019 match.

Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev have all been at this stage before. The Serbian is bidding to win his fourth US Open title and his 24th grand slam overall. “I think the mental has improved more than the physical,” Shelton told reporters, speaking about his development. Now, I’m facing my fourth one,” Alcaraz told reporters. I think that’s how sometimes it can be in life, many things can happen, and you can be disappointed,” Medvedev told reporters.

NEW YORK (AP) — Daniil Medvedev predicted he would need to play “11 out of 10” to get past defending champion and top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. 3-seeded Medvedev won his lone major championship at Flushing Meadows in 2021 by defeating 23-time Slam winner Djokovic in that year's title match. Even before the start of these two weeks, folks had been anticipating a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz showdown on the last day of the event. Theirs is an inter-generational rivalry — Djokovic is 36; Alcaraz 20 — that has fascinated the tennis world in recent months. He lost to Rafael Nadal in New York in 2019, and to Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022.

The women’s final, which will have Gauff face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, caps off a record-breaking US Open where not only attendance surpassed previous years, but so did demand and even ticket prices. The average ticket price this year is $365, which is slightly higher than last year’s ticket price of $350. The US Open ends Sunday with the men’s final, which StubHub said is the best-selling match for the whole two-week tournament. It’s not just ticket prices that are through the roof — so are sales of the beloved signature cocktail of the tournament.

Alcaraz and Djokovic on course for another Grand Slam showdown

Defending champion Alcaraz, 20, won his second major at the All England Club in July and said it would be "great" to play three-time U.S. Open winner Djokovic in the showpiece. "It would be great to play a final against Novak here in New York but we both have really tough semi-finals," Alcaraz said. "Last year I was facing my first semi-final of a Grand Slam. In-form Djokovic, 36, will replace Alcaraz as world number one after the tournament and is on the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court's all-time singles record. Now in his first Grand Slam semi-final in only his fifth appearance at majors, Shelton is up for the daunting challenge of squaring off against Djokovic.

Just when the U.S. Open was on the verge of its dream weekend, Daniil Medvedev did perhaps the most Medvedev-like thing and messed it all up. With a stunning win over Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion and 20-year-old wunderkind of the sport, Medvedev, the game’s happy troll, playful wiseguy and unorthodox baseliner took a wrench to the popular plans to watch the next chapter of the Alcaraz’s mounting generational rivalry with Novak Djokovic. Instead of a rematch of an epic Alcaraz-Djokovic final in the tuneup to this tournament three weeks ago, which was a rematch of the Wimbledon final in July, which was a rematch of their semifinal showdown at the French Open in June, Sunday will bring a rematch of 2021 U.S. Open final between Medvedev and Djokovic. On that day, Medvedev, the 27-year-old Russian with the funky strokes, goofy one-liners and dead fish victory celebration, left Djokovic’s quest to become the first man in 50 years to win all four Grad Slam titles in a calendar year in tatters, drubbing the seemingly unbeatable Serbian champion in three sets.

CNN —Novak Djokovic cruised through to the US Open final after a dominant 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win against American youngster Ben Shelton. Shelton, playing in his first ever grand slam semifinal, came out all guns blazing but was unable to lay much of a glove on the ever-impressive Djokovic. Being two sets down against Djokovic is a place where no tennis player wants to be and, despite being behind, Shelton will be proud of his efforts in the final set. For Djokvoic, he has now made it to a record-equaling 10th US Open final and he will be looking to win his fourth title at Flushing Meadows in Sunday’s final. He also has the chance to make history and level Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam singles titles.

Shelton had flummoxed opponents in New York with his big serve but the 36-year-old second seed Djokovic was able to harness his experience to neutralise a third-set surge from the young American. He next faces the winner of a match between top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and third seed Daniil Medvedev. "These are the kind of matches and occasions that I still thrive on, that still get me going," Djokovic said on court. Shelton handed Djokovic a break in the sixth game of the first set with a series of unforced errors, and the unseeded American was unable to convert his own break point chance in the ninth. Playing in only his seventh U.S. Open singles match, Shelton triumphed in a 30-shot rally before converting a break point in the eighth game, humbling Djokovic, who was appearing in his 100th singles match at the hardcourt major.

Medvedev warns about 'dangerous' US Open heat

Medvedev and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev were so drenched in sweat it looked like they had been dunked in the nearby Hudson River amid a punishing heat wave gripping New York. "We left everything out there," said Medvedev, who claimed the 6-4 6-3 6-4 win in just under three hours. "Maybe we could go five sets and it would be 'fine,' yeah, we would struggle a little bit next day and it would be fine. Medvedev said he doesn't have the answers but wanted to be on the record as saying he was concerned. "I don't have real solutions but it's still better to speak a little bit about it before something happens."

CNN —Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form at the US Open with a dominant 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory against Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. “I think they are at a level of their own at the moment,” Zverev told reporters after facing the Spaniard. The 20-year-old started to assert his superiority from there, breaking Zverev twice in the second set and at 4-4 in the third. “It’s difficult to even compete if you don’t have that.”A year after claiming his first grand slam title, Alcaraz will now contest his fourth major semifinal. “I think I’m more mature now,” he said when asked how he has changed over the past 12 months.
