JERUSALEM (Reuters) - More than 1 million Palestinians in northern Gaza faced an Israeli deadline on Saturday to flee south, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had only just begun to retaliate for last week's Hamas rampage across southern Israel. Israel has since put the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million Palestinians, under a total siege and bombarded it with unprecedented air strikes. More than one million residents of northern Gaza on Friday received 24 hours notice from Israel to flee south before an expected ground offensive. While several thousand residents headed south on Friday from northern Gaza, many others said they would stay. There have also been fears of hostilities spreading, including to Israel's northern border with Lebanon, where clashes this week have already been the deadliest since 2006.

Two other officers were “on the run,” according to a statement from the public prosecutor’s office at the military court in Ouagadougou, the capital city. Burkina Faso’s military junta said in an earlier statement that intelligence and security services had foiled a “proven coup attempt” on Wednesday. “A number of officers and other alleged actors involved in this destabilization attempt have been arrested, while others are being actively sought,” the statement said. CNN —Apple is fighting France’s claims that the iPhone 12 surpasses European radiation exposure limits after French regulators on Tuesday ordered a pause on sales and a fix to phones already sold to customers. France’s National Frequency Agency said it “has demanded that Apple withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market, effective 12 September 2023, as measures show the specific absorption rate exceeds the set limits.” The agency said the iPhone 12 is not compliant with European Union regulations. “Apple must immediately adopt all necessary measures to prevent the iPhone 12 in the supply chain from being made available on the market,” ANFR added. The bank regulator said industry profits dipped 11.3% to $70.8 billion in the second quarter, but that was primarily due to the impact of the bank failures and ensuing acquisitions. Accounting for those events, bank profits were up 5.7% compared to a year prior. The FDIC said banks saw unrealized deposits on securities increase 8.3% in the second quarter, rising to $558.4 billion. U.S. bank deposits declined for the fifth straight quarter, but only fell 0.5% in the second quarter compared to a record 2.5% decline in the first quarter.

Higher funding costsThe requirements will create "moderately higher funding costs" for regional banks, the agencies acknowledged. Still, the industry will have three years to conform to the new rule once enacted, and many banks already hold acceptable forms of debt, according to the regulators. They estimated that regional banks already have roughly 75% of the debt they will ultimately need to hold. Analysts have focused on the debt requirements because that is the most impactful change for bank shareholders.

New York CNN —US financial regulators on Tuesday signed off on new rules to prepare large and regional banks in the case of failure. But the FDIC backed deposits that exceeded that limit when Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failed earlier this year, to reduce the risk of more bank failures. In total, the three bank failures depleted $31.5 billion from the DIF, according to FDIC estimates. Had the proposed rule been in place prior to the three bank failures, it could have prevented many uninsured depositors from causing a bank run, the agencies said. That could make it easier for the FDIC to seize and sell a failed bank, something the agency struggled to do in a timely manner with SVB and Signature Bank.

"It is exhausting, there are many patients and there's a lot of suffering," said Omar al-Saeed, a striking nurse at Port Sudan teaching hospital. According to the UN, more than 100,000 have fled to Port Sudan, filling up the already dense city's hospitals and shelters, while fighting is focussed in Khartoum and the west of the country. Sudanese hospitals have long been under-funded, and strikes by medical staff have been frequent. The war, during which many hospitals in areas of fighting have been damaged, has brought the system to its knees. Doctors in Port Sudan have had to grapple with power cuts, intense humidity and medicine shortages, while patients are kept in close confines though many have respiratory illnesses, hospital officials say.
