Men like Miguel, who in July traveled to Russia and soon after was on the front lines of the war with Ukraine, his mother Cecilia told CNN. After her son responded to a post on Facebook looking for Cubans to work as cooks and construction workers in Russia, Cecilia said two women reached out to him via WhatsApp. But soon Miguel told his mother that he wanted to return home. Since the war began Cuban officials had increasingly echoed Russian propaganda that NATO aggression was to blame for its invasion of Ukraine. When apprised by CNN of the conflicting statements by Cuban officials, Cecilia responded with a question.

The Biden administration announced nearly $700 million in funding for rural, high-speed internet projects. The funding comes from the bipartisan infrastructure bill, which pours billions into internet access. That money funds, in part, the USDA's ReConnect program, which disburses loans and grants to programs intended to get rural communities online. "For too long, rural communities haven't had access to basic resources like affordable, reliable, high-speed internet," Mitch Landrieu, senior advisor to the president and White House infrastructure coordinator, said in a press call. According to 2018 Census data on internet use, Americans living in cities were more likely to have internet access than their rural counterparts: 86% of urban households had an internet subscription, compared to 81% for rural households.

Seniors — people over the age of 65 — are now the fastest growing group of cannabis users in the United States. Since 2020, The United States has spent $4 trillion a year on health care, of which almost $580 billion was spent on pharmaceuticals alone in 2021. This summer, the culture journalist turned art adviser Fiona Mackay launched Kombi, an online gallery and retailer that specializes in South African art, design and craft and caters to the American market. “Because of geography and logistics, so much of this work hasn’t been shown stateside, and I wanted to rectify that,” says Mackay, who was raised in Cape Town and now lives in Brooklyn. Kombi, named for the Volkswagen minibuses that were ubiquitous during Mackay’s childhood, will present work from both emerging and more established makers, offering readily buyable pieces, as well as made-to-order and limited-edition works. “I hope [Kombi] becomes both a cultural and commercial exchange,” says Mackay, who also plans to initiate residencies and collaborations, creating opportunities for American artists to produce work in South Africa and vice versa. Cele plans to show the work with Kombi at an exhibition this autumn in New York.

Nina Simone was always ahead of her time. “They say you’re mean and evil/Don’t know what to do,” Simone sang. “And that’s the reason that he’s gone/And left you black-and-blue.”I’ve been intrigued by “Blues for Mama” since I first heard it on Simone’s 1967 album “Nina Simone Sings the Blues.” And now, thanks to Verve Records’ recent issue of the previously unreleased recording of her Newport performance — packaged as the album “You’ve Got to Learn” — we have an even earlier version of the song out in the world. “Blues for Mama” signified a new moment. Rather than accept the abuse and the negative rumors, Nina tells Mama to set the record straight: “It wasn’t you that caused his bitter fate.”

Just a week after performing at the historically Black Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss., supporting James Meredith’s March Against Fear, Nina Simone was on fire as she strode onstage to play for a very different audience at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 2, 1966. Her interactions with the bourgeois New Englanders at Newport were hardly warm: In the middle of an acid-rinsed version of “Blues for Mama,” she dismisses them — “I guess you ain’t ready for that” — and later she hushes them: “Shut up, shut up.” But she pours every ounce of vitriol she’s got into the performance, especially on “Mississippi Goddam.” She’d first released the song in 1964, and two years later it felt as topical as ever. Meredith had just been shot while marching across Mississippi, and unrest was overtaking redlined Black neighborhoods across the country. At Newport, she amends one of the verses to address the oppression of Los Angeles’s Black community: “Alabama’s got me so upset/And Watts has made me lose my rest/Everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn!” The entire Newport performance is now available for the first time as an album titled “You’ve Got to Learn.” It’s spellbinding, heartbreaking stuff, reminding us just how much Simone would still be lamenting today. Leaf eases you into the movie, which centers on Gia (a lovely Tia Nomore), a pregnant single mother in recovery with two kids in foster care. In tight, precise scenes, Leaf sketches in Gia’s life, its uncertain horizons and crushing limitations. Mostly, Gia struggles to get her kids back, a time-consuming process that involves a reunification program in which she’s constantly monitored. The program’s demands mean that she can’t work more hours, but because she can’t work more, she’s behind in child-support payments, which in turn earns her a scolding from her case worker. If the system seems rigged for Gia to fail, it’s because, Leaf suggests, it is.

Over the past few years, Tubi has quietly amassed a thriving collection of Black-led independent movies. “Cinnamon” is the first Tubi premiere under the banner Black Noir Cinema, an initiative led by Village Roadshow Pictures. It’s a nifty standard-bearer: a gas station attendant and aspiring singer, Jodi (Hailey Kilgore), and a pickpocket, Eddie (David Iacono), team up for an inside job. The robbery becomes a self-own when someone from a local crime family — led by Pam Grier — gets killed in the process. Mama Diakité is a French citizen, raised in the suburbs of Paris by two immigrant parents, not far from where a 17-year-old boy was shot by the police during a traffic stop last week. As cars burned and barricades went up in her neighborhood over the shooting, she got word from the country’s top administrative court that she could not play the most popular sport in France — soccer — while wearing her hijab. On Thursday, the Conseil d’Etat upheld the French Football Federation’s ban on wearing any obvious religious symbols, in keeping with the country’s bedrock principle of laïcité, or secularism. The decision inspired a storm of feelings in Ms. Diakité — shock, anger, disappointment. One involved a fatal traffic stop that French officials have condemned; the other involved a charged debate on the visibility of Islam in French society.

The ruling last summer in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization eliminated the national right to abortion and sent the issue back to the states. Legal abortions declined more than six percent in the first six months after the ruling.
