Messi scores stoppage-time winner in Inter Miami debut
  + stars: | 2023-07-22 | by ( Frank Pingue | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
July 21 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi made a rousing debut for Major League Soccer's Inter Miami as he scored a stoppage-time winner to beat Liga MX's Cruz Azul 2-1 on Friday in their Leagues Cup opener in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After the goal, Messi ran toward the right corner of the field with his arms spread wide and then headed to the sidelines on the other side where he shared a hug with his family. But Messi, seven months removed from leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, got his chance to shine once again. "As soon as I saw the free kick given I thought this is the way it's meant to end," said Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham. Messi's Miami debut coincidentally came 16 years to the day after Beckham played his first game for MLS side LA Galaxy.

On the morning of Lionel Messi’s first official practice with his new Inter Miami teammates, Freddy Eraza Jr. and his father woke up before the sun rose. But Messi, 36, was already arriving when the Erazas got there, and they missed their opportunity for a keepsake. Four hours later, they still stood in the parking lot of the practice facility and stadium, sweating alongside dozens of fans in the sticky, 96-degree South Florida heat. It made sense to see many Argentina fans, jerseys and flags here because Messi led the country’s national team to World Cup glory in December, and because Florida has the largest Argentine community in the United States. But Messi disciples come from all over.

July 20 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi has already proved to be a team player at his new club Inter Miami as the Argentine forward surprised a team mate in the players' group chat by providing a timely assist with tickets to his presentation on Sunday. The new team mates of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner did not want to miss the event either, and forward Leonardo Campana turned to Inter's WhatsApp group for spare passes. "On Sunday, Campana was looking for tickets and he put in the group chat if anybody has any," Inter defender DeAndre Yedlin told the reporters. "I didn't even know whether Messi was in the group chat yet, but he popped up straightway and said, 'How many do you need though?' A sold-out crowd of about 20,000 fans waited through a delay caused by heavy rain and lightning to see Messi being presented with his No.

CNN —Fans turned out in their droves to watch Lionel Messi’s official unveiling as an Inter Miami player. When Pizarro signed for Inter, he filled one of the club’s three ‘Designated Player’ spots. The rule is also known as the ‘Beckham Rule’ after David Beckham – now Inter’s co-owner – became the first designated player when he joined LA Galaxy in 2007. So, with Messi signing a contract reportedly worth between $50 to $60 million per year, the 35-year-old Argentine fills one of Inter’s designated player spots. Either Inter can look to move one of their designated players on or they can “buy down” a player’s contract.

Long-shot GOP presidential candidate Mayor Francis Suarez is campaigning off of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer debut. He's raffling off front-row tickets to the game to anyone who donates to his campaign. He's one of several GOP candidates utilizing creative tactics to increase their donor numbers. In order to make it to the GOP presidential debate stage, the Republican National Committee stipulates that a candidate must have received at least 40,000 unique donations with at least 200 unique donors coming from 20 or more states. Suarez's ticketing raffle isn't the first creative stunt that GOP presidential candidates have used this go-around to try and qualify for the GOP debate.

CNN —Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed the Saudi Arabian soccer league is better than Major League Soccer (MLS) just a day after long-time rival Lionel Messi completed his move to the US to play for Inter Miami. “The Saudi league is better than MLS,” Ronaldo said following Al Nassr’s 5-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Celta Vigo, Reuters reported. The 38-year-old said last month that any new signings for Saudi clubs would be “very welcome” to join him in the league. Since then, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy and Roberto Firmino have been among the star names to move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL). Ronaldo also said he would never return to Europe to play soccer as the strength of the leagues are diminishing.

Miami’s Messi madness — over the arrival of the soccer superstar Lionel Messi, one of the most famous humans on the planet — reached a fever pitch last week when he was spotted at a Publix grocery store near Fort Lauderdale, buying Lucky Charms and Fruit Loops. A few years ago, it was generally accepted that there were four major pro sports leagues in North America consisting of 122 teams: MLB, the NBA, the NFL, and the NHL. Take Major League Soccer. This seemingly insatiable need for programming is a big reason why North American newcomers, like Major League Rugby and Major League Cricket, also have a good shot at survival. Disney has held off from putting its prime ESPN content on its ESPN+ streaming service as it continues to make billions of dollars in revenue each year through traditional cable TV. Disney has held early conversations with potential partners that could improve an ESPN streaming service by extending its distribution and adding content, Iger said. Disney is open to potentially selling an equity stake in ESPN and is looking for a strategic partner in the business as it prepares to transition the sports network to streaming, CEO Bob Iger said Thursday. But in the traditional cable TV business model, ESPN made money per cable subscriber — whether a person watched or not. In addition to finding a strategic partner for ESPN, Iger said he was open to selling or spinning off Disney's legacy cable networks, including FX and NatGeo, and its broadcast group, ABC Networks.
